Head Coach Marvin Menzies Take Out New Mexico State Athletics Director Dr. McKinley Boston introduced Marvin Menzies as the new men s basketball head coach, June 29, 2007. Menzies is the 24 th coach in the history of Aggie basketball. Menzies spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach under Rick Pitino at Louisville. He replaced Reggie Theus, also previously an assistant under Pitino at Louisville, who accepted the head coaching position with the Sacramento Kings. Menzies is one of the best recruiters in the country after landing some of the nation s top recruiting classes in his 16-year collegiate career. Last season, Louisville finished 24-10, reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and was No. 20 in the final USA TODAY/ESPN Men s Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll. Prior to joining the Cardinals staff, Menzies spent one year at UNLV under former Atlanta Hawks coach Lon Kruger (2004-05). With the Running Rebels, Menzies helped sign an incoming class that was rated fourth in the nation. Before his time at UNLV, Menzies worked at Southern California for a season as an assistant coach (2003-04) under current Philadelphia 76ers assistant coach Henry Bibby. In only one year with the Trojans, he assisted in producing a No. 3-ranked recruiting class. Menzies had a four-year tenure at San Diego State (1999-03). He was the leading recruiter for the Aztecs and Steve Fisher, who won the National Championship in 1989. Menzies helped to guide the Aztecs to the postseason in back-to-back years (2002-03) for the first time since 1975-76. At San Diego State, Menzies signed a pair of nationally ranked recruiting classes in 2001 (top 25) and 2000 (top 40) along with the program s first-ever McDonald s All-American. Menzies began his collegiate career at Santa Monica (Calif.) College as an assistant coach under current Aggie assistant coach John McMullen. Menzies spent six seasons as an assistant and associate head coach (1991-94, 1995-96 and 1997-99). He was as the team s head coach for a year (in 1994-95) and guided the Corsairs to a 24-8 record. Menzies led Santa Monica to the Western States Conference title while he earned conference coach of the year honors. With Menzies on the staff, the program was a collective 181-46. During his tenure, 38 players went on to NCAA schools. In 1996, the Corsairs produced a school-record 27-game winning streak and a school-best 32-2 finish. Menzies recruited the top three scorers in the school s history. Between his time at Santa Monica, Menzies was as an assistant coach at Cal State Sacramento (1996-97). He coached under current San Antonio Spurs assistant Don Newman as the program transitioned from Division II to Division I. Beginning his coaching career at his prep alma mater, Hamilton High School in Los Angeles, Calif., Menzies was an assistant coach for eight years. A California native, Menzies was a letterwinner in three sports at Hamilton. Menzies earned a bachelor s degree in economics from UCLA in 1987 and a master s degree in education from Cal State Sacramento. He and his wife, Tammy, have a daughter, Andreanna, and a son, Andre. The Aggie defense recorded nine steals against Cal State L.A. Fred Peete, Jonathan Gibson and JayDee Luster had two steals each. NMSU upped the defensive pressure versus New Mexico Highlands, which gave the Aggies 20 steals. Jonathan Gibson had a game-high six steals while Hawkins and Carter added three apiece. A New Leader Head coach Marvin Menzies became the 24 th coach in NMSU history, June 29, 2007. Menzies spent the two previous seasons as an assistant coach at Louisville. He also coached at San Diego State, UNLV and USC. Supporting Cast Menzies spent the summer hiring his staff including two new coaches. He retained Chris Pompey, who was an assistant coach with the Aggies last season. Menzies also hired John McMullen and Matt Grady as assistant coaches. McMullen spent 25 years as the head coach at Santa Monica College. Menzies and McMullen worked together for eight years at SMC. Grady, who most recently was the director of basketball operations at Cincinnati, was an assistant coach at Murray State and a graduate assistant at Louisville. The other new staff members include Gerald Lewis, Coordinator of Player Development, Paul Ivkovich, strength and conditioning coach, and Ryan Dozier, Program Specialist. Aggie Accolades Last season, senior guard/forward Justin Hawkins became the first Aggie to earn all-district honors (NABC and USBWA) since James Moore in 2003. Hawkins was a first team All- WAC and All-WAC Newcomer selection. In addition, he was named WAC Tournament Most Valuable Player after guiding the Aggies to their fourth conference tournament crown in school history. Senior guard Fred Peete also collected multiple honors last year. He was an All-WAC Newcomer and All-WAC Defensive team honoree. Peete was the first Aggie in school history to garner a defensive team award. Making History The Aggies are a senior-laden team with three starters returning. Last year, NMSU finished 25-9 and won its first WAC Tournament Championship. The Aggies also made their 17 th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 1999. NMSU was voted to finish first in the Preseason WAC Media Poll and second in the Preseason WAC Coaches Poll. The Aggies return the leading scorer and rebounder from a year ago in senior guard/forward Justin Hawkins, who averaged 15.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. NMSU also has senior guard Fred Peete back after he led the team in steals last season with 45 and tied for a team-best 81 assists. He also averaged 9.5 points per game. Home Sweet Home The Aggies set a school record for home victories with 19 wins at the Pan American Center last season. The previous record was 16 wins, which NMSU set in 1989-90, when the team finished the year 16-0 at home. The Aggies doubled their home attendance from the 2005-06 season when NMSU averaged 9,467 fans per game last year. Walk the Line Last year, the Aggies led the nation in both free throws made (641) and free throws attempted (975). A Look Ahead The Aggies return to Las Cruces and host UC Davis, Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m. NMSU s home opener is the first regional game of the Legends Classic. New Mexico State at Duke
