Richard Pfitzner Stadium Woodbridge, Virginia LHP Luis Parra (1-0, 1.59) vs. LHP Hector Silvestre (1-0, 1.29) WRNN AM 1450 ESPN Myrtle Beach www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com TuneIn Radio App MiLB.tv LAST TIME OUT: The Pelicans fell in Game Three of the Mills Cup Championship Series 12-7 to the Potomac Nationals on Tuesday night at Pfitzner Stadium. John Wooten, who provided all of the scoring on Sunday, hit two more home runs, as the Nationals rallied back from a five-run deficit to win and take a 2-1 series lead...despite an early Potomac lead, the Pelicans took a big edge in the third inning. John Wooten s second home run in two games put the P-Nats up 2-0 on SAM WOLFF and the Pelicans in the first. MICHAEL DE LEON singled in a run to cut the deficit to one in the second, and a six-run inning for Myrtle Beach put the Birds ahead in the third...with one on and two outs, five straight Pelicans reached off of the combination of starter Matthew Spann and reliever Kylin Turnbull. A single from RYAN CORDELL and a walk from LEWIS BRINSON loaded the bases for DAVID LYON...The Pelicans catcher then turned on a 2-2 pitch and sent it deep to left for his first grand slam of the season, putting the Birds ahead 5-2. EDWIN GARCIA then greeted Turnbull with a line drive single before De Leon smacked a home run as well, extending the lead to 7-2...That s the last time that the Pelicans would score, however...the Nationals failed to score in the second despite a double and went without a run in third after two singles, but Potomac plated six runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. The first three men reached on Wolff to open the frame, including an RBI single from Stephen Perez, his first hit of the series...with two on and one out, Issac Ballou tripled into the right field corner to cut the deficit to 7-5. With two outs, a close play at first went Potomac s way, as an infield single off the bat of Shawn Pleffner brought home another run and extended the inning for Wooten...The right fielder then crushed his second homer of the night off Wolff, once again putting his club ahead, this time by an 8-7 score, and chasing Wolff from the ballgame. All three of Wooten s home runs in the series have been go-ahead longballs...potomac scored two more off JUSTIN SPRENGER in the fifth and a pair off of RYAN BORES in the sixth to move ahead 12-7, which held as the final score...myrtle Beach mustered just two hits and a pair of walks over the final six innings. Turnbull (1-0) went 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball in relief on three hits and one walk; he fanned eight and picked up the win...in his second postseason start, Wolff (01) shouldered the loss, allowing a career-high eight runs, all earned, on a career-most 11 hits, including the two homers, and a walk. He struck out four. BREAKING HISTORY: The last five Mills Cup Championship series that began tied 1-1 only lasted four games; the home team is 3-2 in those series. In each of the last five occasions the team that won Game Three also won Game Four to capture the Cup. The last time that a Mills Cup Championship series went to five games was in 2005 when Frederick lost a 2-0 series lead before winning in Game Five over Kinston. That Game Five was delayed a day due to heavy rains of Hurricane Ophelia. DOUBLING THE BIG HITS: Entering last night, postseason opponents were 2-for-34 against the Pelicans with runners in scoring position. The Nationals had four hits in those spots, going 4-for-10 and scored 12 runs, which is more than the Birds had allowed in the previous five games combined (they had allowed 7 runs). WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DAY CAN MAKE: Prior to Tuesday s defeat, the Pelicans had allowed just seven runs in 46 innings in the playoffs. The club allowed 12 runs, all earned, in just eight frames on Tuesday, raising the team s postseason ERA from 1.37 to 3.72 THE MATCHUP: Potomac played better down the stretch of the season, winning the second half running away and taking 14 of their final 20 games in the regular season and sweeping Lynchburg in the first round. The Pelicans though won the season series 12-8 and dominated the Nationals at their place, taking eight of the ten meetings at Pfitzner Stadium, where the final three games of the series will take place. Furthermore, the Pelicans won five straight over the P-Nats and six of the last seven meetings before the last two games. INSIDE THE NUMBERS: While the Pelicans first round opponent, Salem, was the second-best scoring offense in the regular season, the Nationals ranked third (635 runs). The Pelicans were first (683). Potomac, however, was not near as good limiting the opposition, posting the second-worst ERA in the league (4.32) and just a +8 run differential for the season. The Pelicans on the other hand scored 133 more runs than the opposition. The Nationals finished 20 games over.500 this season due to an incredible ability to win close games, going 32-13 in one-run contests, including 3-1 in those games against the Birds. Individually, the P-Nats are led by Nationals second base prospect Tony Renda, who won the Carolina League batting title (.307) and was second in OBP (.381). Newcomers Issac Ballou and John Wooten have both impressed in less than a quarter of a season with Potomac, homering four times a piece. Ballou went 3-for-4 with three walks and a homer in the two games of the Northern Division Championship Series. The Pelicans have three of the top 10 hitters in batting average, but two of those players are not active: NICK WILLIAMS (.292, Double-A) and CHRIS GARIA (.284, DL). ROYCE BOLINGER, however, was ninth in the league in hitting and is on the active 25-man roster. PRESTON BECK lead the league in walks, finished second in RBI, fourth in OBP, and third in doubles. HEY NOW, THEY ARE ALL-STARS: Third baseman JOEY GALLO earned Carolina League MVP, the first Pelican to pick up the award since 1999, the inaugural season, when MARCUS GILES won it. In addition to Gallo, former Pelicans catcher JORGE ALFARO and outfielders CHRIS GARIA and NICK WILLIAMS also made the Year-End All-Star team. Gallo also was named to the Texas League Postseason All-Star team, along with former Pelicans ODUBEL HERRERA (2012-2014) and TREVER ADAMS (2013). Former Pelicans skipper JASON WOOD (2011-2014) also earned Manager of the Year for the Frisco RoughRiders. STRUTTING THEIR FEATHERS: The Pelicans roster currently features three players highlighted in Baseball America s list of the Rangers Top 30 prospects. OF LEWIS BRINSON (No. 15 in the Rangers Top 30), RHP JOSE LECLERC (16), and KELLIN DEGLAN (28) are both listed by BA. Unranked in the top 30, CHRIS GARIA is the Fastest Baserunner and PRESTON BECK has the Best Outfield Arm. CHRISTOPHER BOSTICK, traded from Oakland in December, was ranked No. 18 in the Athletics top 30 by BA. Catcher JORGE ALFARO (2, 54 in the top 100), outfielder NICK WILLIAMS (3), third baseman JOEY GALLO (4, 60), RHPs ALEX CHI CHI GONZALEZ (5), and KEONE KELA (18) were all on the Pelicans Opening Day Roster and are now with the Double-A Frisco RoughRiders, while LHP ALEXANDER CLAUDIO (27) is now in the Majors with the Texas Rangers. ABOUT LUIS Despite never being considered an elite prospect, Parra worked his way on to the Baseball America depth chart as the third-ranked left-handed starting pitching prospect in the Texas Rangers system entering 2014. Along with fellow 2013 Pelicans Ryan Bores, Alex Claudio (now with Frisco) and Keone Kela (also with Frisco), Parra was part of the first Hickory Crawdads no-hitter in four years. It was a seven-inning affair on May 19, 2013.
