EVENTS The Aberdeen Boat Club runs four special annual events: The Opening Regatta; Classic Yacht Rally; Four Peaks Race; and South Side Regatta. We are looking for sponsors for the following Sailing Events. THE OPENING REGATTA The Aberdeen Boat Club Opening Regatta marks the opening of the Hong Kong sailing season and is one of the premier sailing events in Hong Kong and as such provides an excellent platform sponsorship exposure. Normally held on the first or second Saturday and Sunday in September, it is open to boats of all types and sizes (and it s often those on the smallest boats who are the keenest competitors!). The course, which tests all aspects of the crews sailing skills, is a traditional Olympic triangle on the first day and an Island course on the second day. There are usually over 400 participants, in about 100 boats, arranged in five divisions according to the type of boat. The starting times for each division are staggered and the fleet soon spreads out to provide a spectacular array of brightly coloured boats and spinnakers, across the whole area. CLASSIC YACHT RALLY The Aberdeen Boat Club Classic Yacht Rally is a celebration of style and design. While featuring older classic craft, it is at the same time open to all boats, both Classic and Modern. Non-racing boats can join the rally division for a great cruising weekend with family or friends. There are also class prizes for Taipan, Cheoy Lee and Cape Carib Yachts, and other classes subject to a minimum of three entries. The event consists of a Saturday afternoon rally starting from Deep Water Bay and an overnight raft up and party. The next day includes an Island race and rally back to Middle Island Club house for a late lunch and the prize-giving. There is a separate prize-giving party with over 40 prizes and trophies for the various classes and divisions. 6

FOUR PEAKS RACE Founded and organised by Aberdeen Boat Club since 1985, this race has become one of the most prestigious events in the Hong Kong Sailing Calendar. It is known as one of the toughest sports competitions in Asia, preparation to take part in this event takes place at least 9 months ahead of the competition. This is an adrenaline packed overnight race, it involves sailing across waters of Hong Kong, kayaking and running across 4 iconic peaks of Hong Kong. Besides muscle power, this race pushes the limits in testing the team s sailing ability, teamwork and most importantly - tactics. The Skipper s briefing is held on the evening before the race for all competitors to highlight and clarify any issues. When the competitor first arrives, they receive their team pack, which includes essential information and giveaways from sponsors. The prize giving party is an additional gem to the event, this is where sailors celebrate the successes and share stories. SOUTH SIDE REGATTA The South Side Open is Aberdeen Boat Club s premier Dinghy Regatta, held annually in early December. The re-birth of an event first held in 1995, the 2009 Regatta attracted 93 entries and now features over 100 boats and over 200 participants each year. The South Side Regatta is the final Regatta of the year where the highest ranked Hong Kong Champions are crowned and is one of the two Regattas used to select the Hong Kong Sailing Federation Youth Squad for the following season. The Regatta comprises a minimum of one race and a maximum of six races for the Optimists, A & B Divisions and eight races for all other classes. The courses sailed are trapezoid and / or windward leeward. Divisions A, B, & Optimists are sailed in the vicinity of Middle Island, Repulse Bay, Chung Hum Kook or Stanley Bay. The Courses for One Designs are sailed in the area west of Po Toy Island or Outer Stanley Bay. First, Second and Third Prizes are awarded for each Division and additional class prizes awarded for One Design classes with three or more entrants in Divisions A and B. 7

EVENTS SUMMER SERIES Sun, sea and al fresco dining, a great way to spend summer in Hong Kong sailing to outlying islands and enjoying lunch at one of the many famous seafood restaurants that Hong Kong has to offer. This series combines the best of both worlds, a race and a scrumptious seafood lunch. There are seven races in this series, starting in May, finishing in August. WAGLAN SERIES The Waglan Series is considered as one of the premier sailing series in Hong Kong due to the race courses and weather conditions. The series comprises 12 races, split into two mini-series. First six races spanning from October to just before Christmas and remaining six races from January to March. Boats compete either in the IRC or HKPN divisions. Number of entries - over 20 boats. The race course is selected on the day, starting either at Round Island or Lamma Island and with a huge selection of race courses that covers the entire southern part of Hong Kong waters, providing an exhilarating day out. Prize giving for the Waglan Series is a spectacular event with over 30 trophies to be won, all trophies and sponsor prizes are laid on a long table, providing a feast for the eyes. 8

SAIL TRAINING PROGRAMME Aberdeen Boat Club offers some of the best sail training courses in Asia, and boasts one of the best sailing teams in the world THE SAILING ACADEMY High Performance competitive dinghy sailing started at Aberdeen Boat Club in 2011. Since then it has developed into one of the best performance sailing facilities, led by club Race Coach Rory Godman, who joined Aberdeen Boat Club in 2010 from New Zealand. The club now runs a fleet of 29ers and has developed a training scheme from learn to sail to top performances at international level. SAILING LESSONS Middle Island is the best facility in Hong Kong to start sailing lessons for children. A wide variety of boats means that children from the age of six are encouraged to learn to sail. There are two main programmes for children: Sea Lions and Sea Wolves. Sea Lions are generally aged between six and nine years, and learn to sail in sturdy little Optimists under the watchful eye of our trained staff. Sea Wolves are for older children who already know what it is like to have the wind in their sails. DINGHY FLEET In 1982 the first dinghies were purchased along with a fleet of ten Phase 2 boats from New Zealand. In 1987 Aberdeen Boat Club bought its first Enterprises, with a small fleet of Toppers and Optimists arriving soon after. The Middle Island Sailing Centre presently hosts a number of members dinghies together with the clubs present fleet of 73 boats. These club boats are available for members to hire, as well as being used for our extensive Sail Training Programme. 9

SAIL TRAINING PROGRAMME JUNIOR & YOUTH LEARN TO SAIL COURSES The following courses are available for sponsorship ABC Sailing Scheme (Age 7-18) The Junior Optimist scheme is for those aged between seven and eleven years old. Older children generally learn to sail in Pico dinghies, and may progress on to become more skilled sailors in other more advanced dinghies such as RS Fevas and Lasers. Supervised practice sessions are also offered, the emphasis here is on having fun on the water whilst practising the skills learnt in the training courses. This gives the young sailors much-needed confidence to sail on their own. Young ABC sailors regularly participate in club races and other activities including the annual Interschools Regatta and the 24 Hour Charity Dinghy Race. ABC Saturday Afternoon Supervised Sailing Open to both teenagers and adults, Supervised Afternoon Sailing sessions offer: An ideal next step after learning to sail A great refresher if you want to brush-up your dinghy sailing skills after some time away from sailing The ideal way to make the transition into Dinghy Racing A great way to build up logged sailing hours to count towards qualification for higher courses Schools Sailing Programme Aberdeen Boat Club has been developing links with various Hong Kong schools, and now offers a comprehensive programme of Dinghy Sailing for schools, both as part of their curriculum and also as after school activities. Sessions focus on either complete beginners and work towards a recognised Hong Kong Sailing Federation Level 1 qualification, or tackle more advanced techniques using our fleet of Lasers and Laser 2000 s. So far seven schools have sailed with ABC with a plan to grow this in 2018 with commercial support. 10

ABERDEEN RACING ACADEMY HIGH PERFORMANCE SAILING TEAM Aberdeen Boat Club has a number of sponsorship opportunities for companies to support its High Performance Sailing Team at a number of events around the world and their quest to win the next 29er World Championships. A partnership will enable team supporters to promote their business within both the local and international communities and will be instrumental in promoting and supporting youth sailing in Hong Kong. Aberdeen Boat Club has sent teams to compete in international dinghy sailing events since 2010 including the World Championships in: Holland; England - achieving first and second places in the youth age group; Germany; Denmark; Canada; and Malaysia. THE 29ER TEAM The team has won every 29er Regatta in Hong Kong since December 2011. There are currently six teams (of two sailors) in the premier squad that have been training hard for over 5 years and are now competitive at national and international level. For the coming season they aim to lift their ability to a new level, and to achieve some of Hong Kong s best results ever in the new 29er fleet worldwide. THE DINGHIES The club runs a fleet of over 40 dinghies ranging from the single-handed optimist to the double handed 29ers and 49ers being the international racing classes. The team has six brand new boats to help ensure its sailors have the best equipment to compete with the best sailors in the world. Currently being sailed and raced at the highest level worldwide, the 29er is a high performance youth sail boat that can also be sailed by lighter adults. The 29er is a skiff type boat, which has the unique ability to sail faster than the wind! The 29er is the training boat for youth sailors who are interested in pursuing an Olympic campaign in the 29er s big brother the Olympic class 49er. REGATTAS IN 2018 / 2019 INCLUDE LOCAL REGATTAS - Aberdeen Boat Club South Side Regatta, December 2018 - Hong Kong 29er Nationals, March 2019 INTERNATIONAL REGATTAS - Kiel Week - Germany, 16 24 June 2018 - Youth Sailing World Championships, Texas, USA 14 21 July 2018-29er Worlds Gydnia, Poland, 25th July 2019 11

HISTORY Located on the southern shore of Hong Kong, Aberdeen is one of the oldest inhabited areas on the Island. A fishing village and the home mooring of the boat-dwelling Tanka people, Aberdeen has been a thriving harbour since long before either Zheng He or Columbus discovered the Americas. 200 years ago the area was a busy fishing community and haven for pirates, as well as being home to ladies of negotiable virtue in floating bordellos! The maritime commerce of this once busy fishing port has evolved over the years and whilst still home to the Aberdeen fishing fleet, the harbour and typhoon shelter now also plays host to Hong Kong s unique Jumbo floating restaurant. The shelter is a bustling hive of maritime activity with the lively marina crammed with ferries, junks, sampans, water taxis, cruisers and yachts. In 1962 Aberdeen was still a busy fishing port with a growing community of pleasure boats. It s proximity to the waters south of Hong Kong Island encouraged a number of enthusiasts with interests in boating and fishing to informally get together to found the fledgling Aberdeen Boat Club. After this low-key beginning, interest grew and the Club was formally established a few years later in 1967. The Club s sheltered harbour facilities with easy access to nearby open water quickly established it as a popular spot for sailing and relaxing. FAMOUS VENUE For film aficionados, Aberdeen Boat Club offers a rare vantage point into how the iconic harbour has been used in location cinematography over the years. It is not only a favourite location for a myriad of local films normally involving cops, triads and vampish women, but also a key location in some of the all time greats of international cinema. Top of the list is the old ABC Nissen Hut featured in Enter the Dragon (1973) starring the immortal Bruce Lee. This is closely followed by the epic adaptation of James Clavell s Noble House (1988) starring Pierce Brosnan jumping from the upper levels of the Jumbo Restaurant. If the dramatic fire featured in the serial had indeed happened, the view from the Waglan Bar would have been fantastic. Last, but not least, who will ever forget Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider Cradle of Life (2003) entering Times Square, jumping from the top of IFC 2 and dropping in on a bemused Aberdeen fishing family! FACILITIES SPORTS & RECREATION In addition to the sometimes-strenuous aspects of sailing, Aberdeen Boat Club offers year-round exercise of many other kinds. The sports facilities include a fitness centre; a squash court; two heated swimming pools, showers and changing rooms; a snooker room; as well as table tennis and table football. THE GYM / FITNESS CENTRE This bijou gym has the very latest in cardio-respiratory and strength training equipment from the world s leading manufacturers. Along with strength training machines, running machines and cross trainers for specific training, Aberdeen Boat Club provides a wide selection of balance and stabilisation equipment including stability balls, stability discs and foam rollers. SQUASH The squash court is free for members to book and has a growing number of players participating in men s and ladies squash ladders plus club night and inter-club matches. POOLS The swimming pool area offers a big pool for swimmers, a knee-deep toddler pool and a paddling pool for babies and crawlers. The big pool and toddler pool are heated during the cooler months of the year and the toddler pool and paddling pool are sheltered from the sun during the summer. Lifeguards are on duty when the poolside area is open. SNOOKER Aberdeen Boat Club has a very active snooker club that organises and frequently wins matches against other clubs in Hong Kong. 12
