2011 Texas 4-H & Youth Development Opportunities Scholarship Applications The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program and the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation is once again pleased to offer to our senior high school 4-H members and current college students the opportunity to apply for an Opportunity Scholarship through the Texas 4-H Program. The application and the instructions are separate documents for easier completion and direction. The application form is being offered in Microsoft Word 97 edition. Requirements for the Baccalaureate, Technical, and Courageous Heart Scholarship All applicants MUST meet the Requirements/criteria to be considered for judging. Those applications not meeting the requirements should not be submitted to the county Extension Office and/or Agent. Please refer to the instructions for a complete and detailed list of the requirements, scoring values, and selection process. All applications and instructions are available through the Texas What is new for 2011 Visit www.4-hmall.org to order these Holiday Ornaments. 2011 Texas Teen Retreat For 4-H ers 13-19, this weekend retreat is a great opportunity to gain valuable leadership skills while building your 4-H network friends from across the state! Texas Teen Retreat is scheduled for January 7-9, 2011 at the Texas 4-H Conference Center in Brownwood. It is designed to build leadership and life skills in youth to help them become productive leaders in their 4-H clubs. Our unique theme this year is Leaders 4 Life! an in depth look at this new project. Participants will see, learn, and get some hands-on practice in components of the project! There will be an exciting service learning slash team building activity sure to capture the attention of all. Teen Retreat participants will be equipped to return to their counties and lead activities with afterschool programs, 4-H clubs, Youth Boards, and more! Registration fees will be $100 per youth. Adult chaperone registration will be $65 per person. Visit 4-H Connect Online! Value of scholarships will range from $1000 -$16000. Applicants that are invited and participate in interviews are guaranteed a scholarship. Applicants will NOT be excused from wither the face-to-face interviews or the scholarship assembly. Applicants and families should plan accordingly based on the dates provided in the guidelines! Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has raised the value of their scholarships from $15000 -$16000 HLSR has raised their maximum amount of financial aid/scholarships that an applicant can have confirmed from $40000 - $75000. 4-H Clover Chronicle Volume 5, Issue 4 December 2010 Mikenzie Yates Council Reporter 2010-2011 The 4-h got off to a good start with the pecan sales. The County sold over 4000 lbs of pecans! The next couple of things going on in the County are the Food Drive and Penny Drive. Please help support your 4-h club by collecting perishable items and bringing your loose pennies to your next club meeting! I m encouraging all 4-hers to help my sister Mikayla, our County Council Chairman, to meet her goal of having over 20 members at the next County Council meeting. The next meeting will be at the County Extension office after the Commissioners Court Breakfast on Tuesday, December 21, 2010, which will be at the Court House! According to Maddy Taplin, I learned lots of things like, how 4-H helps with your careers, more about animal projects from pasture to plate, and how to work in teams using GPS navigation systems and more. Dayton Animal Tag In Small: January 6, 2011 Member Spotlight Jacob Hill is a third year shooter for s 4-H Shotgun Team. He is an 11 year old resident of Dayton, TX. October 30, Jacob attended the Whiz Bang Finals in San Antonio, TX at the National Shooting Complex. Texas Parks and Wildlife invited back the top 5 shooters from each age division in the state. Jacob was one of the 5 shooters from the Junior age division. Whiz Bang is a 50 target game similar to 5 -stand. It is shot at 5 individual stations, 10 targets per station in 5 sets of doubles. Whiz Bang was created and introduced by Texas Parks and Wildlife and is shot at all 4-H shotgun tournaments throughout the season and across the state ending the season with the State Competition in July. After his first 50 targets were shot, Jacob was tied for first place. A shoot-off was held and Jacob lost by one target to a fellow shooter and friend from Brazos County. Jacob s comment, It was a good lose. Second best Whiz Bang shooter in the state...not too bad. Pictured with Jacob is Mr. Charlie Wilson of TPWD. He is the host and manager of the Whiz Bang events across the state. Lonestar 4-H Club Jump Starts the Year with CPR Program! 25 new 4-H members and 20 adults attended the first Lonestar 4-H meeting on November? 2010 at Christian Cowboy Fellowship Church in Cleveland, TX. According to club manager, Donna Young, t Eastgate 4-H Club presents donation check for $500.00 to Joan Jones with Jo Ann Ministries!

4-H Healthy Lifestyle Invitational Contest 4-H Opportunities 2011 Photography Rules Release The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Invitational Contest, to be held on Thursday, June 16th during the 2011 Texas 4-H Roundup, provides youth with the opportunity to participate in a competitive event and utilize the knowledge and skills gained through participation in 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Programs. Open to intermediate and senior age divisions, 4-h members do not have to qualify in order to participate in this invitational contest. 4-H members may enter as an individual or a member of a county team. Teams shall be made up of 3-4 youth within the same age division. More information on this contest is available online at: http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/projects/ healthy_lifestyles/ index_healthy_lifestyles.php. The invitational consists of two parts: 4-H Recipe Rally 1. Judging - each participant will individually judge/place eight classes. Placing of each class will consist of each participant individually ranking the four options provided upon the given situation. 2. Group Presentation - Each team will be presented with a scenario and must evaluate it, decide on a solution, and prepare a presentation. The eight class topics for 2011 are: The Texas 4-h & Youth Development Program and the 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Advisory Board are pleased to offer intermediate and senior age 4-H members the opportunity to participate in the 4-H Recipe Rally. 4-H members are challenged with creating a recipe and submitting a video, via YouTube, of them demonstrating the preparation of the recipe. Examples can be viewed at: http://healthyliving.tamu.edu. All entries are individual and no team entries will be accepted. There are various deadlines. Group 1 - November 30th; Group 2 - January 31; Group 3 - March 31 A winner will be announced for each group. Winners from each group will then be invited to compete in the 4-H Recipe Rally on Tuesday, June 14th at the 2011 Texas Roundup, where the three finalists will provide a live demonstration (open to the public) using the same recipe and judging criteria to a panel of judges. The rules have MAJOR changes related to both the categories and the submission process of he photographs. Their photography categories for 2011 will be: People Animals - Wildlife Animals - Domestic Marine/Aquatic Elements of Design Nature & Landscape Plant/Flora All photographs will be submitted electronic through e-mail (or 4-H CONNECT pending feature being added.) Everyone participating in the photography contest is strongly advised to read the new rules completely. Rules can be found at the Texas 4-H Photography website. Rural Youth Award The award provides recognition for 4-H and FFA members who have shown outstanding leadership in their organization and community. Each organization conducts its own nomination process and submits 20 honorees. Texas youth involved in 4-H and FFA may apply for this award through only ONE organization. Who may apply: Youth 16 yrs. And older and a high school junior or senior as of August 31, 2010. Must have been active in 4-H at least 3 years prior to application. Free Southern Classic Livestock Show Two days of educational workshops, camaraderie, and friendly competition. This educational clinic & show is all about learning and enough about showing to make it fun. Saturday, December 11, 2010 event kick off at the Brazos County Expo Complex on Leonard Road in Bryan, Texas. Livestock can move in all morning on the 11th. Educational sessions will begin as early as 9:30 a.m. We have changed the format and shortened the workshops take a look! More topics with less time in lecture will be the mantra for the day. Sunday, December 12, 2010 there will be an early morning non-denominational church service followed by shows for: Beef, Swine, Lambs, and Goats. There will be prizes and giveaways during the workshops. NOTE: For 2010, we will be taking on-line pre-entry. This will allow us to be as accurate as possible concerning stall/pen space.
