Rivershyre Swim Team 2009 Season Registration & Policy Information Welcome to the Rivershyre Sharks 2009 Summer Swim Season! A member of the Gwinnett County Swim League, the Rivershyre Sharks Swim Team is part of a competitive summer swimming program. There are over 6000 participant swimmers up to age 18 years with 45 teams aligned into 7 divisions. Team placement in a division is typically determined based on geographic location and previous year performance. In 2008, Rivershyre was in the North Division, but assignments have not been announced yet for 2009. We will swim against only 6 of the division s teams in a season. Usually, three of those meets are at other pools and three are conducted at the Rivershyre pool. The meet schedule has not yet been set for the 2009 season, but they may begin as early as Thursday May 21, 2009. An additional meet, where only Rivershyre swimmers participate and typically called a Mock Meet or Time Trials, will be scheduled prior to the first league meet. The date for that Mock Meet will be announced later, after the league schedule has been set and the Rivershyre pool s availability is determined. The swim season culminates with a league championship meet the weekend of July 10-12, 2009. The 2009 championship meet will be held at the Georgia Tech Olympic Aquatic Center. Eligibility for individual participation in the county championship meet is based on a swimmer s best swim time for a particular stroke or event compared to others in their age group throughout the league. Typically, this opportunity is awarded to the top 50 in each age group for each event, or stroke, and also to those who qualify for the Rivershyre Sharks county relay teams. We are pleased that Waylon Yong will be returning as Head Coach for the 2009 season. Waylon has an extensive swimming background and is a Rivershyre resident. We hope to provide an opportunity later in our registration period for swimmers to meet and talk to Waylon and to the assistant staff. 2009 Swim Team Practice Schedule: Monday, May 11 th, has been tentatively scheduled as the first day of practice for the 2009 swim season. Swim Suits and other Team Spiritwear: Swimmers are offered the opportunity to purchase a team swim suit and other team items, known as Spiritwear, at registration. A new suit design has been selected for the 2009 season. This suit will be available for purchase at registration and, following registration, at the Total Team Ware shops adjacent to Sugarloaf and Dacula Swim Atlanta facilities. Buying the suit at registration allows you to purchase it at the discounted team rate. The purchase of a team suit is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged. If you elect not to purchase a team suit, please ensure you have a solid black or black and royal blue suit to wear at meets and for team pictures. All registered swimmers will receive a team t-shirt. T-shirt size information will be gathered during registration and the t-shirts will be handed out prior to the first swim meet. The team t-shirt will have the names of all swimmers and coaches on the back. Other Spiritwear items that will be offered in 2009 include: Team sweat shirts, short sleeve and sleeveless parent shirts, boys shorts, girls shorts, personalized towels and swim caps. Swimmers not wishing to purchase the team cap can purchase an alternative cap. Each swimmer will need swim goggles. These can be purchased at most stores that carry sports gear. Fundraising 2009: It takes approximately $14,000 - $15,000 to operate the swim team each year. The swim fees we collect DO NOT cover all of these expenses. In addition to swim fees, it is necessary to conduct fundraising activities during the season. Participation in these fundraisers is required. We must have parent and swimmer support of these activities through volunteered time, baked good or drink donations, and sometimes selling of items. Fundraisers will be announced throughout the season, some even before the season begins. One that is already tentatively scheduled is a repeat of the School s Out Party held at the Rivershyre Pool on the last day of school (May 20 th, this year). In addition to fundraising events, business ads may be purchased for publication in the team s home swim meet heat sheets, which are a guide for the swimming event and are sold at meets for $1. If anyone owns or knows of a business that may like to purchase these ads, please contact a 2009 Swim Team Board member (contact info at the end of this memo). New Swimmers for 2009: Those swimmers registering with us and the Gwinnett County Swim League (GCSL) for the first time must provide a photocopy of a certified birth certificate for the GCSL records. A copy will be provided to the league and one maintained in our team s files. If this copy (not an original, please) is not provided with the registration, the new swimmer cannot be placed on the roster. Please be advised that Swim Team is not the same as Swim Lessons. A basic level of skill is required. Access to practice or meets could be limited based on swimming ability. Policy for Missed Work Assignments: For the 2009 season, the swim team board is enacting a policy where if a parent fails to fulfill their assigned volunteer position at a meet, their swimmer (or swimmers) will not be seeded in the next meet. This policy is necessary in order to assure that parents understand that fulfilling parent work assignments at each meet is not an optional part of the Rivershyre Swim Team. While not listed as a separate volunteer function, please understand that cleanup at the end of the meet is the responsibility of ALL parents and older swimmers 2009 Rivershyre Swim Team Registration Information Page 2 of 3 pages
