6 Try Sometning new this year Keep learning and exploring in 2014 No matter where you are in life, there s always something new to learn or explore. So this year, try adding one of these four new activities to your routine. These new pursuits may help challenge your brain or contribute to a fuller, more rewarding life and you might just discover something about yourself in the process. 1 LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE 4 NEW THINGS TO TRY IN 2014 Learning a new language may do much more than make your travels easier. Bilingualism requires the flexibility to switch between languages, and a 2010 study published in Language and Cognition found that bilinguals were also faster at switching between other types of tasks. This study adds to other research suggesting that bilinguals have better executive control, a combination of cognitive processes that help you make decisions, control impulses, and plan thoughtfully. 2 PICK UP AN INSTRUMENT You don t need to become a rock star, but spending even a small amount of time practicing music may help keep you sharp. In a study by researchers at the University of St. Andrews, amateur musicians performed better than non-musicians on simple mental tests. The amateurs tended to respond faster while staying just as accurate. Pick up a guitar, flute, or harmonica this year. 3 DO A GOOD DEED FOR SOMEONE ELSE The more altruistic you are, the healthier you may be. In a 2013 study, teens who volunteered with children for 10 weeks had lower cholesterol and inflammation levels than their peers who didn t volunteer. It didn t seem to matter whether the volunteer work was sedentary or active, but the teens who reported greater changes in altruistic behavior after the study ended also experienced the biggest health benefits. So do something for others this year oddly enough, you might also be helping yourself. 4 GO ON AN ADVENTURE Going on an adventure may physically change your brain. In a recent study, mice who boldly went forth and explored their environment grew more new neurons than their less adventurous companions even though all the mice were genetically identical. While this study only examined mice, it shows a direct link between individual behavior and neuroplasticity, and may begin to explain how we develop individual personalities. Whether you travel to a country on your bucket list or find a spot in your city that you ve never explored, take an adventure of your own.

Gymnasium THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE BEST... Even Nature almighty has also made some provisions for out flow of every extra thing that is not required or if in excess. Workout in our lives is also one such type of arrangement to procure good fresh health and fitness of our body and thereby our soul to lead and live a good life or a life self sustainable in the areas of health and fitness by out flowing unwanted or excess fats, calories, lethargy, etc. Good body or fit body make our health fit, thereby creating a healthy mind, which in process is the way to good life. Kisi ne acha kaha hai, Kamzor Aadmi Ka Dimag Bhi Kamzoor Hota Hai, jo Aatma Bhi Kamzoor Bana Deta Hai. As believed and followed since ancient times, social development is incomplete without spiritual development, work out is one such blessing if done regularly. Here we at the Gymkhana are overwhelmed to exhibit the activities of Gymnasium and more than satisfied with the mounting volume in attendance of members in the Gymnasium. Members during the year have been benefited to higher level of content in the day to day functioning of the Gymnasium. To the comforts of all our esteemed members, the complete renovation of the Gymnasium was carried out in April 2013 with a record time completion of work, bearing in mind the importance of workout for regular members who are daily attending the Gymnasium. The Gymnasium, as responded by them, the members, has taken a STATE OF ART SHAPE after it got renovated. Many additional cardio machines and many heavy weight training equipments are also installed to facilitate the members to have the maximum possible benefits out of the gymnasium. A saying in Gujarati says, JEVO AAHAR, AVO ODKAAR... which means... AAM KHAOGE TO PIYAZ KA DAKKAR NAHI AAYEGA, AAM KA HI AAYEGA... same thought is applied and implemented in the outsourcing of resources at our gymnasium. Feel is the first thing to make a person repeat his or her attendance at any place. And workout specially is a process which is really tiring if not done authentically. The feel and comfort of members at such place of labour is a prime requirement and which has been taken care of preciously. 7

The Nutrition and Dietician benefits are also availed for the members. The Gymnasium Sub Committee is very excited and charged to work more, by the support and cooperation offered by all the Premium Members as a whole, all the distinguished Managing Committee members, our cooperative Managing Trustee Mr. Manoj Ajmera, humble Chairman Mr. Rajnikant V. Shah, Project Committee Mr. Pravin Parekh, all the executive Trustees and the dedicated staff of Gymkhana. We are committed and in our endeavour to serve better and justify our being as the administrators, we look forward for regular up gradation in the day to day smooth running of the gymnasium in the interest of our Jolly Family whom we call members. Lawntennis Skating Volleyball TENNIS is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racquet, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as "lawn tennis". Currently our Gymkhana is having Hard Court Surface (Deco Turf) Examples of hardcourts are acrylic (e.g. Plexicushion used at the Australian Open, DecoTurf used at the US Open, Green Set used at the ATP World Tour Finals), asphalt, and concrete. Hardcourts typically have a fasterpaced ball with a very true bounce and it is the predominant surface type used on the professional tour. The ATP World Tour Masters 1000 is a group of nine tournaments that form the second-highest echelon in men's tennis. Each event is held annually, and a win at one of these events is worth 1000 ranking points. The Third and Fourth tier of Men's Tennis Tournaments are formed by the ATP World Tour 500 series, consisting of 11 tournaments, and the ATP World Tour 250 series with 40 tournaments. The following players have won at least five singles titles at Grand Slam tournaments: MALE Roger Federer (17) Pete Sampras (14) Rafael Nadal (13) Roy Emerson (12) Rod Laver (11) FEMALE Margaret Court (24) Steffi Graf (22) Helen Wills Moody (19) Chris Evert (18) Martina Navratilova (18) Today we are proud to say that one of our member Master Poojan Desai is playing All India level Tournament & is doing very well in professional Tennis ROLLER SKATING is the traveling on smooth surfaces with roller skates. It is a form of recreation as well as a sport, and can also be a form of transportation. Skates generally come in three basic varieties: quad roller skates, inline skates or blades and tri-skates, though some have experimented with a single-wheeled "quintessence skate" or other variations on the basic skate design. In America, this hobby was most popular in the 1970s and the 1990s. HISTORY : Young man on The Edvard Petrini's pedaled roller skates, known assv: Takypod in Sweden, circa 1910 Roller skates in the United States around 1905. 1743: First recorded use of roller skates, in a London stage performance. The inventor of this skate is lost to history. 1760: First recorded skate invention, by John Joseph Merlin, who demonstrated a primitive inline skate with metal wheels. 1819: First patented roller skate design, in France by M. Petitbled. These early skates were similar to today's inline skates, but they were not very maneuverable; it was very difficult with these skates to do anything but move in a straight line and perhaps make wide sweeping turns. Rest of the 19th century: inventors continued to work on improving skate design. 1863: The four-wheeled turning roller skate, or quad skate, with four wheels set in two side-by-side pairs, was first designed, in New York City by James Leonard Plimpton in an attempt to improve upon previous designs, The skate contained a pivoting action using a rubber cushion that allowed the skater to skate a curve just by leaning to one side. It was a huge success, so much that the first public skating rink was opened in 1866 in Newport, Rhode Island with the support of Plimpton. The design of the quad skate allowed easier turns and maneuverability, and the quad skate came to dominate the industry for more than a century. 1876: William Brown in Birmingham, England patented a design for the wheels of roller skates. Brown's design embodied his effort to keep the two bearing surfaces of an axle, fixed and moving, apart. Brown worked closely with Joseph Henry Hughes, who drew up the patent for a ball or roller bearing race for bicycle and carriage wheels in 1877. Hughes' patent included all the elements of an adjustable system. These two men are thus responsible for modern day roller skate and skateboard wheels, as well as the ball bearing race inclusion in velocipedes -- later to become motorbikes and automobiles. This was arguably, the most important advance in the realistic use of roller skates as a pleasurable pastime. An advert for an early 20th century model which fit over ordinary shoes 1876: The toe stop was first patented. This provided skaters with the ability to stop promptly upon tippin 11

the skate onto the toe. Toe stops are still used today on most quad skates and on some types of inline skates. 1877: The Royal Skating indoor skating ring building is erected rue Veydt, Brussels.[2] 1880s: Roller skates were being mass produced in America from then. This was the sport's first of several boom periods.micajah C. Henley of Richmond, Indiana produced thousands of skates every week during peak sales. Henley skates were the first skate with adjustable tension via a screw, the ancestor of the kingbolt mechanism on modern quad skates. 1884: Levant M. Richardson received a patent for the use of steel ball bearings in skate wheels to reduce friction, allowing skaters to increase speed with minimum effort. 1898: Richardson started the Richardson Ball Bearing and Skate Company, which provided skates to most professional skate racers of the time, including Harley Davidson (no relation to the Harley-Davidson motorcycle brand). (Turner and Zaidman, 1997). VOLLEY BALL SUB COMMITTEE REPORT Post the great participation in the first Volleyball Tournament held in December 2012, Volleyball has now become a prominent sport of the club. Regularly, thrice a week the sport is being played with dedicated group of members. Atleast 15-20 Members play the sport regularly in the Club. The Sub-committee made an effort to keep the enthusiasm intact and keep having continuous friendly tournament to boost the morale of the members for Volleyball. June 2013-1st Friendly tournament was held on 23rd June 2013. A total of 7 teams participated in the tournament, which was won by Mr. Vishal Velani and Team. October 2013 2nd friendly tournament was held on 6th October 2013. A total of 7 teams participated in the tournament, which was won by Mr.Dhaval Kenia and Team. December 2013 Annual Volley Ball Tournament was organized on 14th & 15th December in which approximately 70 members had participated. A special coach of Mumbai University level was hired for monitoring the level of the game and also to encourage youth in order to take the sport to a higher level. Sleeveless T-Shirts with monogram Jolly Gymkhana and Team Volley were given to the participants. Dinner & Energy Drinks (Glucon - D) for participants of the tournaments was also arranged. All the matches had a close encounter and every win was hard earned. Maximum matches closed with the point difference of 2-3 points between the 2 teams. Participants and the crowd had a perfect entertainment while watching the 2 day long Volleyball tournament. We urge all the members of Jolly Gymkhana to be a part of this spectacular sport as participants or Spectators during such tournaments. We are glad to bring to the notice that with the increasing level of the game and with regular practices one of our young members Mast. Anuj Doshi, a student of Rishikul Vidyalaya was called for selection at the under 14 State Level of Volley Ball. In our future scope we would like to start Inter Club Volley Ball play-offs so that we can provide our players with outside exposure and a scope of improvement within the sport. This would encourage more and more members for making Volley Ball a better sport. Sub-committee has already put a proposal to the club to organize & invite other clubs for Inter Club Volleyball matches, as we have a perfect team and players to represent the club in tournaments.
