The Buckeyes have faced Florida State five times, coming away with four victories while Stanford has taken all five previous meetings. ALL-MIDEAST REGION HONORS Taylor Sandbothe was voted to the All-Mideast Region squad on Tuesday (Dec. 6), selected by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). It marks the third consecutive such honor for Sandbothe. She has been joined by at least one teammate each year, including 2016 with Taylor Hughes garnering All-Mideast Region honorable mention. SWISS ARMY KNIFE Ohio State's recent switch to running a '6-2' offense for the majority of play has opened the door for Taylor Hughes to showcase her mass versatility on the volleyball court. Her wide array of skills has been symbolized in a pair of triple-doubles, both coming in Ohio State victories over then-no. 10 Penn State and last week at 14th-seeded Kansas State in the NCAA Second Round. Hughes is one of 18 players in the country to record multiple triple-doubles in 2016 with only 34 individuals able to muster at least one. SISTER ACT The Sandbothe Family received quite the surprise on Selection Sunday when the 64-team bracket was announced. Older sister Taylor's Buckeyes were being sent to the home arena of younger sister Elle's Kansas State Wildcats with the potential of a second round clash which came to fruition as Ohio State topped Missouri State and KSU downed Lipscomb to set up the sibling face-off. Both Sandbothe's were in their respective team's starting lineups, playing in front of a large contingency of family and friends in attendance. COLUMBUS -- THE CITY THAT CROWNS CHAMPIONS The 2016 NCAA Women s Volleyball Championship will be held in Nationwide Arena. The NCAA Semifinals are contested on Dec. 15, followed two days later by the crowning of a national champion on Saturday, Dec. 17, in front of a national television audience on ESPN. Tickets are ON SALE NOW! In addition, volleyball fans can also look forward to the 2017 NCAA Men s Volleyball Championship which is also being hosted in Ohio s capital city (St. John Arena -- May 4-6, 2017). ALL-BIG TEN TEAM TAYLORS Taylor Sandbothe earned her second straight unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten Team earlier this week, voted on by the conference s 14 head coaches. Taylor Hughes picked up All-Big Ten honorable mention. This marks the 30th consecutive season in which at least one Buckeye has received postseason laurels from the conference office. Thirty-five different OSU student-athletes have now been tabbed All-Big Ten a total of 76 times since 1983. Hughes followed up her B1G All-Freshman squad accolades in 2015 by garnering honorable mention as a sophomore in 16. JOIN THE CONVERSATION - #OSUWVBtribe Social media users are encouraged to join the Ohio State Women s Volleyball conversation by utilizing the #OSUWVBtribe hashtag. Her third block of that evening marked the 518th of her career and launched her to the top of the all-time OSU list. She enters the Wisconsin Regional with 554 total blocks. Sandbothe s assault on the OSU Record Books includes a Top-20 standing in nine additional categories. The complete list is: 554 total blocks (1st), 445 block assists (1st), 109 solo blocks (2nd), 1.12 blocks/ set (2nd), 1,895.5 points (4th),.306 attack percentage (6th), 1,485 kills (5th), 3,311 attempts (10th), 3.84 points/set (14th) and 3.01 kills/set (19th). AWARDS, AWARDS & MORE AWARDS Ohio State welcomed in a cavalcade of awards Oct. 3-5, including not one, but two, National Player of the Week recognitions. The week began with Taylor Sandbothe and Valeria León earning Big Ten Player and Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday. The next day brought AVCA National Player of the Week distinction for Sandbothe. Taylor Hughes then picked up a National Player of the Week accolade of her own, selected as such by espnw. Eleven different Buckeyes have now earned National Player of the Week laurels a total of 13 times since 1994.This marks the third consecutive season Ohio State has been represented at least once. ANOTHER RANKED FOE DOWNED BY OSU The Buckeyes outlasted 10th-ranked Penn State on Nov. 12, representing Ohio State's fourth victory over a Top-25 team in 2016. Then-No. 16 Texas A&M, top-ranked Nebraska and No. 11 Michigan State also fell victim to Buckeye wins. In addition, OSU knocked off 14th-seeded Kansas State last week to reach the NCAA 'Sweet 16.' BRINGING IN MORE BUCKEYES A quartet of highly-touted prep players have signed on to become the next class of Buckeyes to join the women s volleyball program. Head coach Geoff Carlston and staff scoured the country to find the talented group hailing from four different states, including a native Buckeye in Lauren Witte from Mentor. Joining her in the 2017 class will be Hannah Gruensfelder (Weldon Springs, Mo.), Becca Mauer (Houston, Texas) and Ayanna Swan (Richmond, Va.) -- all signing National Letters of Intent to attend and compete at The Ohio State University. NATIONAL RANKINGS Ohio State received the 26th-most votes (53 points) in the final regular season AVCA Coaches Poll (Nov. 28). The Buckeyes were one of eight B1G teams represented in the national rankings, all qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. The Big Ten Conference combined for an overall non-conference record of 122-36 (.772) and has posted a 14-2 (.875) mark during the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament. #1 Minnesota #2 Minnesota #3 Wisconsin #13 Penn State #15 Michigan State #17 Michigan RV Ohio State (53 points - #26) RV Purdue (3 points - #35) SANDBOTHE NAMED BIG TEN S BEST OF OPENING WEEK Taylor Sandbothe won Big Ten Player of the Week distinction after her MVP performance at the North Texas Challenge. HEAD COACH GEOFF CARLSTON The 2016 season marks Geoff Carlston s ninth as Ohio State s head coach. He took the reins of the women s volleyball team on Feb. 5, 2008 and is the fifth head coach of the Buckeyes in the 45-year history of the program. to the first Sweet 16 jaunt. In just his second season at Ohio State, Carlston pushed the Buckeyes to a 25-10 season record and 12-8 Big Ten tally in 2009. OSU returned to the NCAA Tournament via an at-large bid and hosted the first and second rounds in Columbus. Carlston enters 16 with a career winning percentage of.684 in 16 years as a collegiate head coach, racking up 364 victories compared to just 168 defeats. His squads have averaged 22.75 wins per season and own 12 years of 20 or more victories. Among the Division-I ranks at Ohio University and Ohio State, Carlston is the owner of a 315-126 (.714) mark in 13 campaigns roaming the Buckeye State. The native Minnesotan has made his mark in the state of Ohio, guiding the Bobcats of Ohio University and the Buckeyes to a combined 11 NCAA Tournament appearances. Carlton has directed Ohio State to the NCAA Sweet 16 four times since 2010, one of just 11 schools in the country to accomplish that feat. Before arriving in Columbus, Carlston started his NCAA Tournament success with five straight Mid-American Conference championships to propel Ohio into the big dance, including his first Sweet 16 showing in 2005. Carlston s squads are a combined 7-3 all-time in the NCAA First Round and 5-0 at Ohio State. He led the Bobcats to a conference crown in each of his five campaigns in Athens. Carlston s pupils have often been recognized among the nation s elite, totaling 15 All-American accolades overall and at least one in each of the past five seasons. Elizabeth Campbell and Taylor Sandbothe repeated as All-Americans in 2015, each earning recognition for the second straight season. For the first time in school history, three Buckeyes -- Campbell, Sandbothe and Taylor Sherwin - earned AVCA All-America honors (honorable mention) in 2014. Ohio State s Katie Dull (2009), Emily Danks (2011) and Kaitlyn Leary (2013) also earned All-America honorable mention while Mari Hole was chosen in back-to-back seasons as an 11 honorable mention and Third Team member in 2012. Five Bobcats picked up All-American status under the tutelage of Carlston. On the conference level, Carlston has molded 14 All-Big Ten, 25 All-MAC and eight All-NSIC performers since 2000. Academic success has followed Carlston throughout his career as well. Student-athletes receiving academic all-conference laurels has been a common occurrence under Carlston, racking up a total of 85 such awards: 50 Academic All-Big Ten, 25 Academic All-MAC, 10 Academic All-NSIC). His program was honored by the NCAA in May 2014 with the Public Recognition Award, given to teams scoring in the top-10 percent nationally in each sport based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates (APR). During the summer of 2011, Carlston served as head coach of one of the USA A-2 squads that played at the USA Volleyball Open National Championships Women s Open, finishing second. Carlston came to Ohio State after spending five years as head coach at Ohio University, building a powerhouse in the Mid-American Conference. His squads reached the NCAA Tournament every season and won five straight conference crowns with an overall record of 144-22 during Carlston s time in Athens. The Bobcats won 78 of 80 MAC matches and went 14-1 in the conference tournament with four tourney titles. Four Bobcats were named MAC Player of the Year and a pair were tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year. He was named the MAC Coach of the Year four times and was twice named the Mideast Region Coach of the Year. Prior to Ohio, Carlston posted a 49-42 record in three seasons at the helm of the Concordia University-St. Paul (Minn.) program. He took the Golden Bears from an 0-18 mark in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference the season before his arrival to a serious run at the league title in 2002. CUSP finished the 2002 campaign with a 24-9 record - its best in Division II competition - and earned its first national ranking during the season. Carlson recruited three consecutive NSIC Freshman of the Year selections to play for the Golden Bears. In the summer of 2002, Carlston served as coach of a Division II all-star team that played in a tournament in Holland. Competing against the top Dutch college and professional league teams, the group won gold and bronze medals. Before Concordia, Carlston served two seasons as a student assistant coach at Minnesota while completing a master s degree in social work. Carlston began his coaching career in 1994 as head coach at Hopkins High School. In his two-year tenure, his teams went 41-17 and captured the Classic Lake Conference title both seasons. He left the high school ranks for two years of service in Belize as a Peace Corps volunteer but stayed close to the sport, serving as head coach of the Belize women s national team and as an assistant for the men s national team. He helped develop a year-round training program and the team finished fourth at the 1997 Central America championship, earning the country s first international victories. Following a run to the Sweet 16 in 2014, Carlston s Buckeyes added Academic prowess to place themselves in rare company. Just three schools nationally could boast both advancement into the NCAA Sweet 16 and perfect multi-year APR scores of 1000 three or more times each between 2010-14. The 2013 Buckeyes swept through a 12-0 nonconference and finished the season with 18 wins overall. Senior Kaitlyn Leary was tabbed an AVCA All- America honorable mention while Taylor Sandbothe was placed on the Big Ten s All-Freshman squad. Ohio State went on a four-year run of 20-or-more wins starting in 2009. In 2012, the Buckeyes registered a 23-11 overall ledger, including a 13-7 conference mark to earn place fourth in the daunted Big Ten Conference. Carlston and the Buckeyes notched the program s first ever win at Nebraska (3-1, Oct. 26) that season. Senior Mari Hole was named AVCA Third Team All-American and unanimously voted All-Big Ten while fellow senior Emily Danks and junior Kaitlyn Leary were All-B1G honorable mentions. Carlston conducted a pair of treks to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2011. Juniors Mari Hole and Emily Danks picked up All-America nods during a 21-15 campaign in 2011 after the 10 Buckeyes notched a 24-12 overall win-loss tally en route 34 Upon his return to the United States, Carlston became head coach of the 17 s team of the Minnesota One Junior Olympics club, which competed in the 17 Open Division at USA Nationals three consecutive years under his direction. In June 1993, Carlston earned his undergraduate degree in speech communication from the University of Minnesota, where he played on the club team for the Gophers. She had logged five previous seasons at Ohio State, serving as the program s volunteer coach in 2012 and competing as a defensive specialist from 2007-10. She was selected to the 2016 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 list. Halverson was the lone Big Ten coach chosen and one of just 12 Division-I honorees nationally. The AVCA Thirty Under 30 award was created to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport. Halverson helped lead the Buckeyes to the NCAA Sweet 16 in her first season as an assistant coach in 2015, five years after doing so as a team captain on the 2010 OSU squad. Halverson s previous two seasons were spent patrolling the sidelines at the University of North Texas as an assistant coach. She and the Mean Green racked up 22 wins in 2014 on the strength of Conference USA Player of the Year, Carnae Dillard.
