First pitch from Bettye Giles Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. on both days. The Skyhawks (15-13, 0-3 OVC) are excited to be home after opening the season with 28 straight games away from the friendly confines of Bettye Giles Field. Additionally the Skyhawks own a five game winning streak against Tennessee State while winning 18 consecutive games against Belmont, dating back to 2001. QUICK HITS HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS After spending the team s first 28 games of the season on the road, the Skyhawks will finally open the regular season with an Easter weekend doubleheader against Tennessee State and Belmont. PROGRAM WIN NO. 700 With a 4-1 victory against Wagner on March 12, UT Martin notched its 700th win in program history. BACK TO YOUR REGULAR SCHEDULE After spending the first five weeks of the season in non-conference tournaments, the Skyhawks will return to a bit of normalcy with the opening of Ohio Valley Conference play and mid-week non-conference games. The Skyhawks came out of the tournament portion of the schedule with a 15-10 mark. ON THE SHOULDERS OF KENNEDY The Skyhawk pitching staff has relied heavily on the shoulders and right arm of junior hurler Brooke Kennedy. Kennedy leads the team in almost every statistical category, surpassing her single-season high for wins just a third of the way through the season while posting an 8-5 record and 2.54 ERA in 93.2 innings of work. Appearing in 15 games, Kennedy has struck out 76 batters while allowing just 30 walks and doing the distance 10 times. SKYHAWKS DIG THE LONG BALL After hitting just five home runs in the opening 14 games of the season, the Skyhawks posted an offensive explosion at the Mean Green Spring Fling, due in large part to the long ball. The Skyhawks more than doubled its season home run total with seven homers at North Texas, with freshmen Katie Warrick and Alli Fulcher each hitting a pair on the week. Joining in the action was Alicia Hansen, Carly Gonzales and Gracyn McBride tallying their first home runs of the season. OVC MOVES TOURNAMENT TO NEUTRAL The OVC Board of Athletic Directors and Board of President have approved a plan to move the OVC Softball Championship to the neutral site of Oxford, Ala., for the next two years beginning with the 2016 season. The eightteam double-elimination tournament will be held May 11-14, 2016 and May 10-13, 2017 at Choccolocco Park. The move marks the first time the OVC Softball Championship has been held at a neutral site. KENNEDY NAMED OVC PITCHER OF THE WEEK Junior pitcher Brooke Kennedy became the first Skyhawk pitcher to win OVC Pitcher of the Week honors since 2012 after posting a dominating effort at the Chattanooga Spring Classic. Kennedy went 2-0 with a 0.82 ERA in 17 innings of work, picking up victories against IPFW and Chattanooga. She posted a new career-high with 10 innings against Chattanooga, handing the hosts their first loss of the season while limiting them to one earned run. KENNEDY & MECKL HONORED BY TSWA Junior battery mates Brooke Kennedy and Renate Meckl swept the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Softball Player of the Week honors for their performances at the Chattanooga Spring Classic. Kennedy posted a 2-0 mark along with a 0.82 ERA in 17 innings of work. She tossed a career-high 10 innings against Chattanooga while notching another complete game against IPFW. Meckl batted.467 over the five-game stretch, tallying one double, one home run and three RBIs. Her best game came against IPFW where she tallied a three-hit contest, including a three-run home run. SKYHAWKS EARN OVC TEAM ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AWARD UT Martin won the prestigious Ohio Valley Conference Team Academic Achievement Award for ranking as the league s member institution with the greatest percentage of its eligible student-athletes who achieved a 3.25 GPA or higher. The award was the Skyhawks second straight and fourth since 2004-05. WARRICK SELECTED TO USA JUNIOR OLYMPIC ATHLETE POOL Freshman Katie Warrick has been identified for the National Team athlete pool by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of American and USA Softball following her participation at the 2015 USA Softball Junior Olympic Cup in Chino Hills, Calif. In total, Warrick is one of 69 athletes identified as either 2017 Junior Women s National Team age-eligible or as Women s National Team age-eligible. GONZALES NAMED TO COLLEGE SPORTS MADNESS PRESEASON ALL OHIO VALLEY FIRST TEAM Junior Carly Gonzales was tabbed as an All-Ohio Valley first team honoree by College Sports Madness. A native of Anaheim, Calif., Gonzales is in her third season in the outfield for the Skyhawks after playing and starting in all 50 games last season while earning Madness All-Conference second team honors. She posted a.335 batting average while leading the team with 41 runs, 57 base hits and a school single-season record 18 doubles. She also smashed seven home runs while driving in 35 RBIs and tallying 14 stolen bases. NEW FACES The Skyhawks welcome 11 newcomers to the fold this season including two junior college transfers and nine freshmen. UT Martin returns just 10 players from last year s squad while posting only three players with multi-year experience heading into the season. MECKL NAMED 2015 NSCA ALL-AMERICAN STRENGTH & CONDITIONING ATHLETE The National Strength and Conditioning Association named junior catcher Renate Meckl a 2015 NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year for her performance in the weight room, on the playing field and in the classroom. The NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning Athletes of the Year program recognizes those collegiate athletes, whose athletic accomplishments reflect their dedication to strength training and conditioning. In the weight room Meckl has been a leader by example. Using her 5 9 frame, Meckl posts a 175 lbs. bench press, 245 lbs. squad and 200 lbs. hang clean at time of nomination. SKYHAWK HONORED BY NFCA WITH TEAM ACADEMIC & ALL-AMERICAN HONORS UT Martin continues to impress in the classroom after being recognized by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in its annual Top 10 Academic Team rankings for the 2014-15 school year. UT Martin ranked seventh nationally among Division I institutions with the team s 3.578 cumulative Grade Point Average. The Skyhawks were the only Ohio Valley Conference program ranking in the top-25 after taking home the league s OVC Team Academic Achievement Award in August. As a whole, the Skyhawks placed 14 student-athletes on the NFCA All-American team. SKYHAWKS PICKED TO FINISH EIGHTH After failing to make the OVC Tournament for just the second time in coach Donley Canary s 14-year stint, UT Martin was been predicted to finish eighth in the Ohio Valley Conference standings according to the league s head coaches and sports information directors. The Skyhawks picked up 108 votes. Defending OVC Tournament champion Tennessee Tech was predicted to finish first with 13 first-place votes and 231 votes total.
