I get by with a little help from my friends John Lennon. Marie Schmidt has had a recurrence of breast cancer and had surgery a couple weeks ago. She s recovering well, but needs our positive thoughts and prayers. Anita Puff was having foot problems that kept her away from dancing, but she was at class this past week as an angel and she received her Golden Dancer Award. We're so happy to see her back. Bob Benigar is progressing slowly, recovering from his stroke. He asked that we say hello to everyone so, Hello everyone! Bob, we re all sending you good wishes for you continued improvement. Keep our friends in our hearts, say a prayer, send them a card or give a call to show you care. Kindness is a great healer. Please keep all our friends in your thoughts this month and always. When you hear of someone who is not well or needs some cheer, let Margie Zingg know. You can reach her at (951) 244-2404. Margie At our 37th Anniversary dance on January 9 with Buddy Weaver you could find the following people helping out in the hospitality area: Ron Morris, Chris Burns, Ann & Gary Weston, Muriel Greenwood, Debbie Lumpkins and Sue Miranda...and of course me!! Thanks to all who brought the usual abundance of great food. Joe & Vi Henderson greeted our guests, and Margie Zingg decorated beautifully in the Red, White & Blue theme. If you would like to help at a dance call Rosalie 244-0672 or just pop in and she ll put you to work JUST WHAT IS THE YELLOW / BLUE BOOK? Do you have a subscription to the Yellow Book and maybe even the Blue Book? Do you know what they are? Some of you may not know what they are or even how to get them. The Yellow Book is a quarterly publication by CCHA to provide information for dancers in the Cow Counties Hoedown Association area. It is compiled and edited by a volunteer member, since CCHA is a non-profit organization. The book lists who to contact at CCHA, gives club news & updates, sunshine reports, and information on items of interest for club/association members. The Blue Book is published bi-monthly and covers a wide area, from northern Los Angeles County, south to San Diego and east to the Inland Empire. This book is published commercially by The California Square Dancer Blue Book of Anaheim. Both of these publications are important references for dancers because they list dances square and round, in a format that summarizes dances by day of the week, by club and list the caller & cuers for the dance. If you don t already subscribe to one of them, visit CCHA s website http://www.squaredancingccha.org/ for the Yellow Book. Call 714-803-0250 for the Blue Book. February - March 2011 Page 2

On Randall & Holmes Jim Randall and Ray Holmes are a great duo. Jim is from Poway, he s been calling since 1973, while Ray is from Escondido and started calling in 1974. They started calling together in late 1974 and enjoy calling together quite a bit. Jim and Ray have called the Twirler s March dance for the past 5 plus years. In the early years they would change costumes between tips to accent the theme of the song they were singing. They still sing the songs, but the costumes have shrunk in the closet, so they don t do that anymore. Both Jim and Ray are very popular callers individually; but they still call together for a few clubs, the Twirlers being one of the lucky ones. A popular draw with dancers, there are usually 15 squares attending the dances they call together. The Twirlers always look forward to attending their dance each year. WHO S IN MY SQUARE? Last Month was.. Melinda Townsend A Help me out to make this column intriguing by sending me 10 = 12 tidbits about yourself. You can send it by email to countryxmodel@yahoo.com or by letter to 37648 Oxford Dr., Murrieta 92562 Cowtown Singles are dancing on the 1 st & 3 rd Fridays with guest callers. Carol Allen cues the 1 st Friday and Howard Delcambre cues on the 3 rd. There has been a complete remake to our Canyon Lake Twirlers website. We hope you will take a visit to check it out, and tell us what you think. If there s something that we ve forgotten or you would like to see added, you can send email to conyonlaketwirlers@gmail.com. Visit the website anytime, day or night at: www.canyonlaketwirlers.org What if there was no such thing as Gravity? What if what we thought was gravity, was in fact Love? I mean, wouldn t that just be the coolest? And if you truly, TRULY thought that no one, not one sole single person on the face of the planet Loves you, and for some bizarre and impossible reason, you were right and that you in turn Love nobody, not even yourself (because as everyone knows, if you aren t Loved, chances are; you won t Love anyone) then you would just.. fly away, off into outer space never to be seen or heard of again? EVER. What if Love was so overwhelmingly powerful that it keeps us all on this planet we call Earth? And it also keeps us sane? And those of us that are a little off or strange that the intensity of our offness just showed how little you honestly Love yourself? And the only, single reason that we make sense and can talk and communicate is because we love others? What if there was no such thing as Gravity? February - March 2011 Page 6

DANCERS CODE OF CONDUCT We want to keep our club members, new and experienced dancers up on the who, what & where of our square dance community. As space permits, we will include information and tips from across the country. This month comes from the UNITED SQUARE DANCERS OF AMERICA. The USDA is a national dancer s association organized by dancers, for dancers and operated by dancers. They have produced several pamphlets and educational materials for dancers and club organizations. Since we re all dancers, I thought we might start with the Dancers Code of Conduct. Square Dancers everywhere are encouraged to comply with an appropriate Code of Conduct that will enhance the public image and the pleasure of the movement to all dancers and nondancers, as well. Among the unique aspects of this wholesome activity is the attractive attire that is an intrinsic part of the image of the square dance. Accordingly, the wearing of appropriate apparel is as important to the enjoyment of the participants as it is to those watching. Not only should the clothing of the dancers be appealing to the eye, but also functional to the others within the square. It is generally recommended that this includes the wearing of long-sleeved shirts for the men and full or prairie skirts for the ladies as local customs and events may require. Avoidance of alcoholic beverages both before and during dances is essential to insure the enjoyment for everyone. A single drink can severely diminish the response time required to execute the intricate moves of the dance. Square Dancing in itself has the capability of providing sufficient exhilaration to warrant abstinence from alcohol on dance nights. Courtesy to others is important at all times. This includes personal cleanliness, as Square Dancing is an energetic recreation that can be offensive should adequate precautions not be taken. The welcoming of others into the dance and into the squares is an integral part of the social aspect of Square Dancing. Walking out of a square at any time is considered a severe insult. At the end of the dance, no one should leave the square before thanking everyone who contributed to the joy and the fun of dancing together. Conforming to the accepted and generally taught hand positions and maneuvers for execution of the movements help to eliminate any uncertainty among the other dancers. Proper styling while dancing is as important to the enjoyment of the Square Dance as is the proper execution of the movements themselves. Adherence to these guidelines should be encouraged from the very early stages of beginner s class. The best means of achieving this is through example by experienced dancers and leaders and by the incorporation of ethics into the educational process during the class. It is felt that through the reaffirmation of these long recognized rules of conduct, dancers everywhere will be reminded of the importance of courtesy, friendliness and personal hygiene. All of these things are an integral part of the Square Dance activity. Don t miss out on your chance to win the Grand Prize of $1,000, second prize of $750 or third prize of $250 plus 2 ribbons to next year s State convention. You do not need to be present to win With a great start of 15 new dancers! They had a great time, so much so that they came back the second and third weeks! We ve got a good group of people and Vic is moving right ahead teaching the fun of dance! Vic Kaaria - Class Caller/Instructor All Raffle Ticket sales benefit the State Convention AND OUR CLUB!
