As if the attack and midfield units aren t good enough, the Tigers may also feature the top defensive unit in the nation as well. Senior All-American Damien Davis and junior Ricky Schultz anchor a unit that held nine opponents to nine goals or less last season. Senior Julian Gould posted a sparking 8.25 GAA and a.590 save percentage in his first season as s starter These Are The Facts: Johns Hopkins enters the 2003 season with an all-time record of 806-259-15 (.753) in 114 seasons of play. The Blue Jays own seven NCAA titles, 29 USILA titles, and 6 ILA titles for a total of 42 national championships. In Season Openers: JHU is 5-8 against Princeton in season-openers since 1990. Surprisingly, JHU has lost 11 of its last 17 season-openers dating back to 1986. Overall, Hopkins sports a 79-34-3 (.694) record in season-openers. Captain My Captain: Senior attackman Bobby Benson (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh), Senior midfielder Adam Doneger (Hewlett, NY/Lynbrook), senior defenseman Michael Peyser (Lloyd Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor), junior defenseman Greg Raymond (Corning, NY/Corning East) and senior goalie Rob Scherr (Reisterstown, MD/McDonogh) have been selected as team captains for Johns Hopkins this season. We Go Way Back: Johns Hopkins is coached by Dave Pietramala, who played at Hopkins from 1986-89. Pietramala was recruited to play at Hopkins by current Princeton coach Bill Tierney, who served as an assistant at JHU from 1985-87. Family Ties: Princeton head coach Bill Tierney is the uncle of current JHU offensive coordinator Seth Tierney, who played at JHU from 1988-91. More Family: Johns Hopkins senior midfielder Adam Doneger is the older brother of Princeton sophomore attackman Jason Doneger. All In the Family: For the third consecutive season, the Johns Hopkins coaching staff consists entirely of Johns Hopkins graduates. Head coach Dave Pietramala and assistant coaches Seth Tierney (class of 1991), Bill Dwan (1991) and Pat Miller (2001) all earned their degree at JHU. Prior to the 2001 season when Pietramala, Tierney, Dwan and Howard Offit comprised the Blue Jay coaching staff, the last time the entire coaching staff was made up of JHU graduates was 1984, when the Blue Jays were coached by Don Zimmerman (1976), who was assisted by Jerry Pfeiffer (1966), Joe Devlin (1978), Fred Smith (1950), Joe Cowan (1969), and Dennis Townsend (1966). Familiar Face: Second-year Princeton assistant coach Shawn Nadelen was a four-year member of the Johns Hopkins lacrosse team from 1998-2001. He garnered Second Team All-America honors as a senior and led Johns Hopkins to the Final Four in 1999 and 2000. Tough: Johns Hopkins will once again play arguably the most difficult schedule in the nation. The Blue Jays play the three other teams that advanced to the Final Four last season (Syracuse, Princeton and Virginia), all four ACC schools (Virginia, Duke, North Carolina and Maryland) and in-state rivals Towson, Loyola and Navy. All nine of those teams are ranked in the preseason top 15. Officially, JHU checks in at number three in the 2003 Face-Off Yearbook/UnderArmour Strength of Schedule Rankings. Brother Act: The Blue Jays have three sets of brothers on this year s team and two other players whose brother previously played for Hopkins. The brothers on this year s team include Bobby Benson and Joe Benson, Michael Peyser and Greg Peyser and Todd Smith and Scott Smith. In addition, Corey Harned s older brother, Chris Harned, was an attackman for the Blue Jays from 1997-2000, while Peter LeSueur s older brother, Paul LeSueur, was a defensive middie and a captain on the 2000 team that advanced to the Final Four. Anytime, Anywhere: This week s game against second-ranked Princeton will be the 22 nd in the last 23 games away from Homewood Field for the Blue Jays against a team ranked in the top 15. It s Great for Ratings: Six of JHU s 14 games last season were decided by one goal. Dating back to the 2001 season, 11 of Hopkins last 26 games have been decided by one goal. JHU is 9-2 in those 11 games. 2003 Face-Off Yearbook/ UnderArmour Strength of Schedule Rankings Rank School Rating 1. Virginia 178 2. Syracuse 174 3. Johns Hopkins 170 4. Loyola 161 5. Duke 159 6. Maryland 156 7. Hofstra 147 8. Georgetown 146 9. Princeton 142 10. North Carolina 137 More Ratings: Since the beginning of the 2001 season, 19 of JHU s 26 games have been decided by three goals or less. One-Goal Turnarounds: JHU is 9-2 in one-goal games in the last two season. In its previous 11 one-goal games (covering a span from 1997-2000), Hopkins was 4-7 in one-goal games. Another One-Goal Turnaround: JHU s nine one-goal victories in the last two years are just one less than the Blue Jays accumulated in the previous six seasons combined (1995-2000). Younger Than You Think: A year ago, the Blue Jays started just two seniors on their way to the Final Four. While experienced, the Blue Jays are still relatively young. The Blue Jays will have more sophomores (5) than seniors (4) in the starting lineup against Princeton. One of those seniors, goalie Rob Scherr, actually has one more year of eligibility. * NCAA Tournament Games - 2 -

#3 Johns Hopkins at #2 Princeton Johns Hopkins vs. Princeton The Last Meeting #4 Princeton (10-4) 11 May 25, 2002 #1 Johns Hopkins (12-2) 9 Rutgers Stadium 2002 NCAA Semifinals PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Fourth-seeded Princeton jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead, led 6-1 and 7-2 in the second quarter, and never let Johns Hopkins trim the deficit to one goal as the Tigers ended the Blue Jays' season with an 11-9 win in the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Semifinals at Rutgers Stadium. The win, before a Rutgers Stadium lacrosse record crowd of 23,123, improves Princeton's record to 10-4, while Hopkins had a nine-game winning streak snapped and falls to 12-2. The Tigers wasted little time jumping on the Blue Jays, who counted eight freshmen among the 20 players who apperaed in the game. Brad Dumont and Josh White both scored in the first six minutes of the game to stake the Tigers to a quick 2-0 lead. An Adam Doneger goal off a feed from freshman Kyle Harrison at the 8:42 mark put the Blue Jays on the board, but that would be Hopkins' only goal in the first 23:54. B.J. Prager pushed the lead to 3-1 with an extra man goal at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter, and Dumont and Prager added goals in a span of just 35 seconds in the final minute of the first quarter to make it 5-1. "We dug ourselves into too big of a hole in the first half, and with the way Princeton plays, it's hard to dig yourself out," Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala said afterward. The Blue Jays outscored the Tigers, 8-6 over the final three quarters, but that first quarter proved to be more than they could overcome. The second quarter was even as the teams traded goals to account for a 7-3 Princeton lead at halftime. A Brendan Tierney goal just three minutes into the quarter made it 6-2, before an unassisted goal by Kyle Barrie at the 6:06 mark finally ended the scoring drought for the Blue Jays. Prager and Doneger traded goals in the final 3:37. The second half saw the Blue Jays climb back in the game with a series of two-goal runs, but each was answered by a twogoal run by the Tigers and Hopkins was never able to pull within one goal. Barrie and fellow freshman Peter LeSueur both scored in the first 3:46 of the second half to pull Hopkins within 7-5, but as he did all day, Prager had an answer. His fourth goal of the game with 8:31 remaining in the third quarter made it 8-5 and an Owen Daly extra man goal less than a minute later made it 9-5. "We're not a slow down team, we just know when to run and when to slow things down," Prager noted afterward. "It's a credit to everyone else on offense when I'm able to have a game like I did today." The Blue Jays appeared to have the momentum heading into the fourth quarter as Doneger and senior Matt Hanna scored in the final 3:36 to trim the deficit to 9-7, but once again the Tigers had an answer. Sean Hartofilis, held scoreless for the first three quarters, scored an unassisted goal on a dodge through traffic just 1:19 into the final period and Prager added his fifth goal of the game just over two minutes later to make it 11-7. Still, Hopkins had one final push. Barrie drew the Blue Jays within 11-8 with his third goal of the game with 8:13 remaining and Kevin Boland added an unassisted goal with 3:41 left in regulation. The Blue Jays had several more shots in the final three minutes, but Princeton goalie Julian Gould stopped Boland point-blank with just over two minutes left and Bobby Benson's 10-yard shot with just under a minute to go to bring the Blue Jays' season to an end. "A lot of the difference today was experience," Pietramala added. "You can't simulate the fact that if you win this game you get to play for the national championship. If you lose, you go home. When you experience a season with a special group like this, it's tough to see it come to an end. But these guys have nothing to be ashamed of. In the beginning of the season, we were the third worst team in Baltimore -- 13 games later, we're 12-1 and playing the defending national champions in the Final Four." #4 Princeton (10-4) 5 2 2 2-11 #1 Johns Hopkins (12-2) 1 2 4 2-9 Goals: P: Prager-5, Dumont-2, Tierney, Daly, Hartofilis, White. Lucky Number Eight: Johns Hopkins started the same 10 players in all 14 games last season. Eight of those 10 players return this season. Only goalie Nick Murtha and defenseman P.J. DiConza graduated after starting last season. Another Eight: Hopkins returns its top eight scorers from last season. Top This: Of the 138 goals the Blue Jays scored last season, 132 (95.7%) were scored by players who return this season. Consider it Topped: Of the 85 assists the Blue Jays were credited with last season, 83 (97.6%) were registered by players who return this season. Just to Make it Official: Of the 223 points Hopkins amassed last season (138 goals / 85 assists), 215 (96.4%) were registered by players who return this season. Extra, Extra: Johns Hopkins finished the 2002 season tied for fourth in the nation in extra man offense (21-for-49/.429). Senior Adam Doneger and junior Kevin Boland led the way with six extra man goals each and players who scored all 21 extra man goals for the Blue Jays last season return this year. Extra Special: Johns Hopkins was 4-for-10 (.400) with the extra man in two games against Princeton last season. I m Honored: Seniors Bobby Benson, Adam Doneger and Michael Peyser and junior Kevin Boland all garnered STX/USILA All-America honors last season. Doneger earned First Team honors, Benson and Boland garnered Third Team status and Peyser earned Honorable Mention AA. Stars and Stripes: Seniors Bobby Benson and Adam Doneger were members of the United States National Team that won the ILF World Championship last summer. Leader of the Pack Part I: Bobby Benson has led the Blue Jays in goals in each of his first three seasons. He is just the third player since 1975 to lead the team in goals three straight years (Terry Riordan/1992-95 and Matt Panetta/1989-91).
