W O M E N S B A S K E T B A L L 2 0 1 0-2 0 1 1 COAChES BIOS Defensive-minded, good recruiter, tireless worker, and players coach are just some of the words and phrases that are used to describe third year women s basketball head coach Steve Hardin. Hardin came to the Lady Rams in 2008 by way of the BC men s basketball program, where he served as an assistant coach and later associate head coach of a varsity team that went 65-34 overall and 42-19 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play in just three years. During that same span, Hardin helped guide the men s team to two National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Tournaments, while also serving as the head coach of the men s junior varsity basketball team and varsity golf team. Before Bluefield, Hardin served three years (2002-2005) as a varsity assistant coach and junior varsity head coach for men s basketball at King College in Tennessee. There, he recruited, managed day-to-day operations, ran study sessions, and supervised film Coach Steve hardin exchange. Before King, he was a student assistant coach for men s basketball at Tennessee Tech under Mike Sutton, who won a national championship at the University of Kentucky under Tubby Smith. Hardin began his coaching career in 1999, while a student at East Tennessee State University, as an assistant coach for varsity boys basketball at his alma mater, Elizabethton High School in Tennessee. Coaching alongside his father, the head coach, he helped guide Elizabethton to a 27-8 record and a top 16 ranking among all boys basketball teams in the state. Since taking over an ineffective Lady Rams program at BC, he has done nothing but win and improve. After joining the team mid-season in 2007-2008 as the interim head coach, Hardin led the Lady Rams to 14 wins in 2008-2009 10 more than the year before. Just one year later, in 2009-2010, he coached the Lady Rams to a school record 23 wins, and for that major turnaround he was named AAC Coach of the Year. The Lady Rams also earned a bid to play in the 2010 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament, where they finished fifth. Because of BC s recent success under Hardin and the likelihood for more, coaches in the AAC picked the Lady Rams fourth in the 2010-2011 pre-season poll, the highest pre-season ranking for BC women s basketball in more than a decade. Coach Steve hardin in action Hardin and his wife, Tanika, a secondary school teacher, live on the sideline in 2009. in Bluefield, West Virginia, with their newborn daughter, Lyla Gail. Jessica Brokaw, a former player for the Bluefield College women s basketball team, begins her third season as assistant head coach for the Lady Rams. As a player, she was a four-year starter and captain for BC, averaging 10 points, four assists, three rebounds, and one steal per game during her career. In addition, she was selected by her teammates as the Most Valuable Player during her senior season and was the recipient of the Team-Before-Self Award during all four years on the squad. Before Bluefield, Brokaw played at Lexington High School in Ohio, where she led her team to a state tournament final four the school s first ever for girls basketball. During that time, she was a three-year captain and a four-year starter and

COAChES BIOS led Lexington to two conference championships, two regional tournament bids, four district tournament appearances, and a record of 82-18. Today, Brokaw plays a key role in all facets of the women s basketball program at Bluefield College, serving as recruiting coordinator, film exchange director, operations manager, academic adviser, and player development supervisor. In addition to her basketball duties, she is the head coach for men s and women s tennis at BC. Bluefield College graduate Jeromy Sutphin begins Coach Jessica Brokaw his first season as an assistant coach for Lady Rams basketball after one year as an assistant coach for men s basketball and an assistant athletics director at Cincinnati Christian University. A former standout player at Rocky Coach Jeromy Sutphin Gap (VA) High school, Sutphin played junior varsity basketball for Coach Steve Hardin and the Rams before beginning his coaching career as a student assistant for men s basketball at BC. Katana Mullen begins her second season as a student assistant for Coach Steve Hardin. After a stellar career at Summers County (WV) High school, Mullen played two years for the Coach Katana Mullen Lady Rams before becoming a BC student assistant coach. W O M E N S B A S K E T B A L L 2 0 1 0-2 0 1 1 SEASON PrEvIEW The Bluefield College Lady Rams hope the 2010-2011 basketball season will be as successful as last year s. Last season, the Lady Rams broke the school record for wins in a season with a 23-11 overall record and a 10-6 mark in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC), which earned the team a bid to play in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament in Winona Lake, Indiana, where they finished fifth in the nation. In addition, Coach Steve Hardin was named AAC Coach of the Year. This year, in Hardin s third year as head coach of the Lady Rams, the team will play a tremendously challenging schedule against the likes of highly-rated NCCAA and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams like Emmanuel College, Mount Vernon Nazarene University, and Southern Wesleyan University. BC will also play National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I schools in High Point University, Wofford College, and Tennessee State University. In addition, the Lady Rams will play four NCAA D-II schools: Martin Methodist University, Winston-Salem State University, Concord University, and Bluefield State College. Back to face that tough schedule and repeat last year s success are three seniors, including Kiara Williams, a 5 8 forward from Springfield, Virginia. Williams averaged five points per game last season and tallied 90 total rebounds and 27 assists. Senior Kiara Honore, a 5 3 point guard from Anchorage, Alaska, averaged three points per game in 2009-2010 to go along with 25 assists, while senior Katrina Morris, a 6 4 post player from Tampa, Florida, scored four points per game a year ago and had 141 total rebounds and a team-high 37 blocks for the Lady Rams. Also back from 2009-2010 team are three juniors: De Arra Darling of Powder Springs, Georgia, who scored seven points per game; Kia Gilliard of Cross, South Carolina, who averaged 8.4 points, two assists, and two steals per game; and Takieya Rouse of Woodbridge, Virginia, who averaged seven points per game. Five sophomores also return, including Celinda Arrington of Long Beach, California; Antonia Cataldi of Warrenton, Virginia, who led the team in rebounding; Kendra Nutter of Saltville, Virginia; Megan Randall of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Heather Thomas of Glade Springs, Virginia. New to the roster in 2010-2011 are point guards Keyla Baltimore of Bristow, Virginia, and Jasmin Washington of Cleveland, Ohio; wing players Chelsie Tooke of Bristow, Virginia, and Jessica Polite of Beaufort, South Carolina; and forwards Brittany Lankford from Princeton, West Virginia, and Doriane Davis of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
