XXXVIII, No. 11 November 2012 Americans advance in Haiti (1915)

CMH President s Column Message from CMH President Doug Wildfong On Saturday, September 15th, 2012 many of our CMH membership volunteered and participated in a painting project for a Veteran of World War II residing in Brighton CO. The project was in part organized by Rick Stockton and Dianna Stockton, working with a local Brighton Business for the supplies and gathering help in the way of volunteers to complete the project. The volunteers gathered in the morning at the residence and set to work promptly preparing the exterior of the house for painting. Work progressed quickly due to the numerous volunteers and excellent coordination of the leaders and workers. The entire exterior was scraped, primed, caulked and finish coat painted between 8:30 am and 3:30 pm. The house for the project is the property of Florence Becker, a 92 year old Veteran of World War II, serving in a Cavalry Recon unit attached to the 4th Armored Division during that conflict. During the project several of our members took a few moments to talk with Mr. Becker and were very impressed with his recollections of actions he described and particulars of his unit. They also viewed an album being composed by his daughter of photos and memorabilia of Mr. Becker's time with his unit in France, Belgium and Luxembourg during the Summer of 1944 and into 1945. I extend a special thanks to Rick and Dianna for bringing the project to our club to volunteer and give effort and work back to our community. Thanks also goes to the volunteers (and please forgive me if I have overlooked any of our volunteer members in this listing). Among the participants for CMH were Tony Fryer and Robin Fryer along with Tony's eldest daughter, Dan Gurule, Kevin Dykman and his two Sons, David Minor, Rick Stockton and Dianna Stockton along with Rick's son and myself. I also want to credit Mr. Becker's family and friends and their contribution to the work party. There is an article in the Denver Post about this outing along with a couple of photos of the participants and home. I include an excerpt from Dianna Stockton's follow up email, below. "Hi Doug- I received a call from the Becker's this morning about an article in the Denver Post about our painting project. I thought you might want to somehow publish the link or the actual article in your newsletter. Unfortunately, all of the pictures included were of people out in the front yard so the historian club didn't get their pictures in but it does make mention of your group. Rick and I are still both so grateful for all of the help everyone provided so we could get it done so fast. It's amazing how beautiful it looks and they are so pleased with the outcome. To find the article go to: yourhub.denverpost.com published on Sept. 27th and search for the Adams County Hub. There are 2 different pictures along with a 2 page article." We are also trying to arrange for Mr. Becker to come to a future meeting and thank us personally and talk to us about his experience with his unit in Europe. I will alert the membership when we can set a date, hopefully soon. 2
