Description 1990 Radford BOC 50 now for sale. LightwaveexButtercupwas built by Radford and McIntyre for the 90/91 BOC solo around the world race, in which she placed second. A movie was made that still viewable on Youtube. The incentive was to build a fast and indestructible vessel capable of withstanding the fury of the southern ocean she proved her pedigree and as many boat of the fleet either sunk or got damaged,buttercupcame through a solid 2nd. The boat is welded with the best hand selected aluminum and has 4 watertight bulkheads with access through watertight doors, in addition to that there are two 500ln. Ballast tanks to port and starboard so she s practically unsinkable. All the ribs and lateral stringers are T d for extra strength. She shows no sign signs of corrosion and has a corrosion detection system so this can be monitored. The electronics - Raytheon with many Tridata s and repeaters, and there are two solid linear drive Autopilots with a third as back up. After the race Mcintyre sailed her to the Arctic Peninsula and did some research for 6 months and then sold her to Mitsubishi for another campaign, this however was short-lived - the new driver got in considerable weather on the training delivery and did not continue! She was then sold to an American private party who changed her quite a bit. Added was a custom beautiful hard dodger, a leisure furl boom for mainsail reefing and an electric winch to do so. The deck layout was modernised which made the boat a lot easier to handle. He hired a shipwright to put in a simple yet palatable interior with a Herreschof kitchen (long sided to starboard) a U shaped settee and new navigation station. The whole interior was paneled with formica on plywood trimmed with cherry wood and foam vinyl overhead panels. It is very functional and pleasing to the eye compared to the bare bones racing interior she had before. The boat didn t get used alot other than day sailing and after ten years it was sold to a Canadian who had Antrim design a custom bowsprit so as to turbo the boat for shorthanded racing again.
