LORNE VICTORIA SEPTEMBER 30 th 2017 RUNNERS PRE RACE INFORMATION PACK Prepared by Race Director Brett Saxon Welcome and thank you for supporting this trail running event on the trailsplus calendar. The Hell Run, located in Lorne Victoria named HellRun due to the burning effect the quad muscles are going to experience on the long down hill sections if you are prepared to take them on with gusto. Name aside this is a magnificent part of the Surf Coast and you are going to love the challenge, the sense of remoteness and the camaraderie of your fellow runners. As always our goal at trailsplus is to provide a safe, friendly encouraging opportunity for people to connect with trail running and enjoy the outdoors and the glorious trails and mountains. You might be a first timer or experienced runner we see everyone as an important individual their own journey. The main 21km loop course is set on an oblong shaped course with an out and back section it is very easy to navigate. The main course is a 21.1km circuit, which is repeated 2 or 3 times if doing the marathon or ultra event. In addition there is a fun yet challenging 10km course for those not quite ready to take on the longer distance and steeper mountains, the 10km course takes you to two waterfalls and is bound to be a highlight of your journey.

As always trailsplus events support CanTeen, the organisation for young people living with Cancer, by entering a trailsplus event you are helping us support them, if you were able to donate a little extra during the entry process we a re very grateful and thank you for helping us help these young people. I hope you are all injury free and looking forward to a day or weekend away in Lorne. I wished I was too but a run of bad luck sees me a little broken and less mobile then normal. High 5s and big hugs will be a little scarce sadly as broken ribs healing slowly get a bit angry with a lot of arm movement. A big thank you to those stepping up to do what I normally do. As a new event only in its 3 rd year we are expecting numbers to be very small in 2017 and we thank you for being a part of the this event, we hope you can join us for Dinner on Friday night or if staying in Lorne for the weekend, it would be great to catch up for a post event meal. At time of print there are just over 100 Runners entered. 20 in the 10km 20 in the 21km 15 in the 42km 10in the 63km and 1 Relay Teams of 3 MOST IMPORTANTLY HAVE FUN AND BE SAFE #runhappy #runtrails #explore #endure #acheive thanks for supporting the event Brett Saxon Trailsplus Race Director

GETTING TO LORNE There two ways to drive to Lorne, either via the coastal route along the great ocean road from Geelong to Anglesea or inland via Winchelsea and Deans Marsh, both options are approximately a 2 hour drive from the Westgate Bridge. FRIDAY DINNER Lorne Hotel 6pm Onwards we have a table booked for 20, of which 10-15 are support and family but we would love you to join us. CAR PARKING The start area at Sheoaks picnic ground does not allow for much car parking and our permit requires that all runners and run associated supporters catch the shuttle bus. The bus will operate from the Lorne Country club. Participants are required to park in the Lorne country club car park and catch the shuttle bus, visitors and supporters are also required to use this service. Please park away from the golf course side and DO NOT park in any labelled car parks. i.e. PRESIDENT, SECRETARY ETC. If wet be careful if parking on grass area, check area first. SHUTTLE BUS The shuttle service will start operating from 6:15am to ferry the 63km runners and continue to circulate until the 10km event starts. The bus will then have a break and will resume around 12:30 for returning you to your car. The round trip taking approximately 20 minutes. Allow plenty of time to catch the bus and register. REGISTRATION AND RACE BIBS We do not mail out race numbers, numbers are to be collected at registration on race morning, this allows us to check who has started and account for everyone on course.

SATURDAY DINNER For those remaining in Lorne Saturday evening after the race we plan to have a post race dinner, everyone welcome, we will return to the Lorne Hotel for 6:00pm again a table for 20 is booked. Let us know who intends to come we must confirm our table and numbers, email or text me, we may run out of room on our table, but should be others available HELL RUN SCHEDULE Friday Dinner - Pre Race Evening dinner Lorne Lorne Hotel from 6:00pm On the Foreshore 176 Great Ocean Road Corner of Bay St on the Round about Saturday Race Day Bus from the Lorne Golf and Country Club 6:00am onwards 63.3km Race Registration Number Collection from 6:30-6:45am Sheoaks Picnic Ground 63.3km Race start 7:00am Sharp briefing 10 minutes before start Relay Team Race Registration Number Collection from 6:30-6:45am Sheoaks Picnic Ground Relay Team Race start 7:00am Sharp briefing 10 minutes before start Bus from the Lorne Golf and Country Club 6:45am onwards 42.2km Race Registration Number Collection from 7:00-7:45am Sheoaks Picnic Ground 42.2km Race start 8:00am Sharp briefing 10 minutes before start Bus from the Lorne Golf and Country Club 7:45am onwards 21.1km Race Registration Number Collection from 8:00-8:45am Sheoaks Picnic Ground 21.1km Race start 9:00am Sharp briefing 10 minutes before start Bus from the Lorne Golf and Country Club 8:45am onwards 10 km Race Registration Number Collection from 9:00-9:45am Sheoaks Picnic Ground 10 km Race start 10:00am Sharp briefing 10 minutes before start COURSE NOTES AND SAFETY CONTINUED ACCESS AND THE FUTURE OF THIS EVENT The future ability to hold this event depends totally on how we as a group conduct ourselves. Parks Victoria does not guarantee we can continue to hold this event, but if we are to have a

chance of future events in this location it is important we abide by a series of guidelines. Some of these are permit conditions others are rules of the area. We must not park in the Sheoaks car park, Dogs are not permitted at all it is a national park. We must give way to all other park users. RESPECT OTHER PARK USERS Do not startle people by charging up behind them, let them know you are coming past or take a wide birth, remember there may be bush walkers in the area, please take care if approaching or passing on the single tracks in particular. Environment LEAVE NO TRACE Do Not Leave any sign of rubbish behind, it is very important that we don t drop rubbish or let rubbish get away from us at the aid station. In particular our Gel packets and tear off tabs, please don t drop them on the track, carry them with you to the aid station or drop in the bins provided All events will have pre race briefings to go over any questions you may have and to provide me an opportunity to quickly cover what is required from us all on the day. YOU MUST ATTEND THE BRIEFING OR WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO START THE RACE HELPING RUNNERS IN NEED It is requirement of entry to the event that you assist any runner in need of help, if you come across an injured or distressed runner please offer assistance or get assistance for them. Runner s health and Safety is our number one priority. We will take into account the time (in regards to your finish time) you spend with a runner in need if you are then able to continue on with the event and finish. PERSONAL BELONGINGS if you intend to have valuables please consider locking them in your car and out of sight. We cannot guarantee the security of your personal effects. There will be an area to place your bags but we strongly advise to secure your valuables, as we cannot watch over the bag area all the time. DRINKS AND FOOD The aid stations will have water and electrolyte drinks available from 25 litre containers. The Aid Station will be stocked with a small amount of, Snakes, Jelly Beans, Chocolate, Fruit Cake, and much more. AID STATION DROP BAGS There is 1 Aid station located along the course, you pass by here at 8km and 14km in the 21km course. We are unable to get drop bags here once the race starts, for marathon and ultra runners, you pass through the main aid station and can leave your own nutrition there. The 10km event being short does not have an aid station on course, we believe all participants can make 10km without extra energy, however if you feel you need something be sure to carry it with you. The fresh water is available from the water falls if needed.

ULTRA / MARATHON PERSONAL DROP BAGS can be placed at the start finish area only, equal to 21km and 42km in your respective events. THERE IS A FANTASTIC BBQ AVAILABLE AT THE START FINISH AREA We encourage people to bring a sausage and drink and hang around and encourage the others still running, it can be a powerful force the support from the sidelines and often the reason people achieve their goals. Our friends will be firing up the BBQ and have some snags ready for you, bring a coin to cover their costs. As the shuttle bus takes a break during the middle of the day, please plan to be part of the event celebration and support of others. ROAD CROSSING AND PATH MERGING There is one road crossing where you may encounter some public traffic, this is located in the final 500M of the 10km and 21km loop course. Please take extreme care when crossing the dirt road from the single track. PLEASE FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS OF MARSHALS AND OFFICIALS MUSIC DEVICE DISTRACTIONS whilst we understand many runners like to run with music, we request that you do not use music during this event. Remember many runners will be offering you encouragement and so will supporters, so please consider how you may be able to hear and acknowledge the support you will receive. Also it is extremely important you are aware your surrounds and none race users, these may be other runners or cyclist warning you they are coming. Enjoy the people and the great location, listen and enjoy your surrounds. Start Finish We have a finish line Gantry and will be using Manual Timing via our ipad timing system. This requires that your race number is visible each time you pass through the finish

chute, please help us to accurately time your race by clearly displaying your race number on your chest RACE NUMBERS WE DO NOT POST OUT All participants must register on the morning and collect your race number, race numbers must be visible at all times as this allows the timing people to record that you have been through the finish, it is important that your number is not obscured or even covered by your own arms, many people get ready to stop their watch as they finish, wait until you have passed the finish line to put your hand up to stop the clock, many finish line photos are ruined as people are looking at their watch, 1 or 2 seconds wont matter and you can always take 1 or 2 off the finish time knowing you crossed before stopping the watch. MAPS TO GET YOU AROUND A Location overview of Lorne and course location

21.1km 42.2km 63.3km ULTRAMARATHON & MARATHON & HALF MARATHON COURSE DESCRIPTIONS The HELL RUN course is based on a 21.1km circuit, basically a loop style course with an out back section between the 8km distance to the 14km distance points. (Aid Station Location) Starting at Sheoaks picnic ground the course heads up Garvey track, it s a mostly uphill course for the first 8km with brief moments of down and flat, be prepared for the challenge. You do not turn off the wide fire trail onto any single track. At 8km you pass the first closed gate and arrive at the intersection of Garvey and Sharps track. There will be an aid station located here. You turn left and head out past the Telecommunications tower, just prior to the tower you come across your second closed gate, make your way over or around it, (Don t go to the Tower) continue on the main dirt road down to Mt Sabine road. This is the turn around point, do not go onto Mt Sabine road, a turn around sign will be located here and depending volunteer numbers a marshal may be in place. The sign will say half marathon turn around here, repeat 3 times if doing the 63 or twice if doing the marathon. Retrace your footsteps back to the aid station at the Junction of Garvey and Sharps tracks. Continue straight ahead or slightly left, DO NOT turn right down Garvey track, head down Sharps track, the constant down hill running begins, enjoy the burn the legs are going to experience. Remain on the main track you do not turn off. At 19km you will arrive at another gate and camping ground, go through the gate and continue past the camping ground for another 1km then turn right onto the single track. You have almost completed the course, but now it s really important to take extreme care as you descend off the single track and make a sharp turn across the access road to the Sheoaks picnic ground. STOP LOOK give way, cross over the road to the single track, once on the track stay on the right fork don t go up to the left. You are only 300M from the finish; enjoy the winding single track it will bring you to the picnic ground to the cheer of the crowd. Congratulations you re done, unless you re up for the 42.2 or 63.3, then you get to do it again and again 10km COURSE DESCRIPTION The 10km course starts at the Sheoaks picnic ground and heads out Garvey track. It s mostly uphill for the first 3km with some occasional flat and down hill sections. Remain on Garvey track until the 3km point where you make a hairpin turn to the right onto a single track, this track leads toward Kalimna Falls and is where the real fun begins. For the most part it is downhill single track but it is muddy and slippery in places and has some fallen trees to negotiate, enjoy but take care. You must go to the Upper falls, therefore take the track that leads to them, by turning left, you do an out and back to the falls, then continue on to the lower falls. On descending the single track take the first left hairpin turn and head to the lower falls, then return and head straight back to Sheoaks. You come to a junction at 8km. You must continue straight do not turn left over the bridge, its 2km to the finish. Continue on the single track until you meet the main dirt road. You

have almost completed the course, but now it s really important to take extreme care as you descend off the single track and make left turn up the dirt road over the bridge, then turn right onto the single track. Do not go straight ahead through the carpark. Once on the track stay on the right fork don t go up to the left. You are only 300M from the finish; enjoy the winding single track it will bring you to the picnic ground to the cheer of the crowd. Congratulations you re done WEATHER FORECAST FOR EVENT It looks like we might get a light shower; it will be cool so make sure you have some warm gear. Bring some warm clothes for post run too and hang around and warm up with a BBQ, the likely rain before race day might add to the slippery trails, so get those trail shoes ready, road shoes not recommended. YOUR RACE KIT & GEAR Suggested and required gear to have with you Mandatory Gear to have in your kit bag that may be required to be carried on the day. Waterproof Hooded Jacket, Gloves and Beanie or Buff. Recommended Gear to carry with you during the event Mobile Phone, Wide compression bandage, Hand held water bottle, emergency food. Post Race clothing Be sure to bring a bag of clothes on the bus to change into and keep warm.

YOUR REWARD FOR FINISHING YOUR EVENT All competitors who complete their event distance will receive a custom designed medal to commemorate your achievement. PHOTOGRAPHY We hope to have some of our volunteers taking pictures on course, keep your eyes open and be ready to be captured in action.

PRESENTATION Presentation will take place as soon as we can establish results for each event, its always great to have people hang around and be part of the presentation ceremony, enjoy the post race BBQs and mixing with friends. CAR PARKING onsite at Sheoaks is limited to organisers and volunteers who need to move freely during the event, all competitors and supporters are to use the shuttle bus service, see information on shuttle bus. Parks Victoria and Surf Coast Shire We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to conduct this event in the Surf Coast and Lorne region. Thank you to all the authorities who have supported getting the event on the sporting calendar. INSURANCE The event insurance policy does not extend to personal injury; it is highly recommended that you have personal insurance cover or at least ambulance cover in time for the event, the shortest of ambulance trips can cost thousands of dollars and if air ambulance is required it can be upward of $10,000:00. For around $100 ambulance membership it is a very smart insurance policy to have just in case. TOILETS There is a main toilet block located at the Sheoaks picnic ground, there are no other toilets on the course. TROPHIES In 2016 we will be awarding the 1 st 2nd 3rd Male and Female in each event with a custom trophy, the relay team that places first will receive a perpetual trophy, that will be held for 12 months then returned for the following years event. RANDOM PRIZES Thanks to our sponsors we will have a selection of additional prizes on the day.

Some additional Maps The Bus Route from the Lorne Country Club where you Must Park and catch the shuttle bus Please be sure to park away from the country club and not park in the golfers carparks and especially the labelled carparks, There is a large grassed area but please be mindful if wet it could be soft. We are allowed to use the main carpark but try to avoid parking close to the club house and golf course side, stay more toward the back and the sheds.

Another View of the 10km Course Starting tat the checkered flag spot, you do a small loop around the Picnic area then head off up Garvey track. You do the tight hairpin left at approx 3.5km, descending to a small bridge then ascending up to the junction of the Kalimna Falls track. You go left to the Upper Kalimna Falls, right to the end of the board walk and view the falls, Then return passing the junction that you previously came out of. Soon Take care on the return from the upper falls, its single track and there will be two way traffic. After passing the junction you soon make a very sharp left turn to the lower falls, please take care its narrow and slippery, go right to the waters edge, view the falls and return, take care passing two way traffic. When back at main track continue down, its gentle down hill fast and fun. Follow the signs to the finish, take care when crossing road that cars may use.
