Volleyball Canada HALL OF FAME SELECTION PROCESS

Purpose of the Hall of Fame The purpose of the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame is to recognize the outstanding achievements of individuals who have attained prominence in the sport of volleyball or who have made a major contribution to the development and advancement of the sport in Canada and/or internationally. Process Inductees to the Hall of Fame will be commemorated on a plaque (one of five) that will be housed at the national offices of Volleyball Canada. The Ad-Hoc Awards and Alumni Committee will be responsible for selecting candidates to be inducted in accordance with the following outline. The intention is to invite the annual inductees to attend a celebration night hosted in conjunction with the Volleyball Canada Convention so that they may be honored and recognized for their achievements. Awards and Alumni Committee The Awards Committee will be responsible for selecting candidates according to the criteria in the nomination package. Members Marlene Hoffman Chairperson Sylvie Bigras Wayne Hellquist Monica Hitchcock Greg Williscroft Lucie Leclerc - VC Staff Liaison Categories of Recognition The five categories of membership in the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame are as follows: Athlete Builder Coach Referee Team Note: A minimum number of 2 recipients will be selected for recognition each year. Athlete Category Athlete recognition in the Hall of Fame will be awarded to individuals who have achieved outstanding and extraordinary success as competitors at the elite level. Players must be retired from competition at their highest level for a minimum of five (5) years before they may be nominated. Contribution to the sport over a period of time Achievement at national team and international levels; team and individual records will be considered Leadership and character Sportsmanship and integrity Contribution to the sport following competitive career 2

Candidate Pool: Contribution to the sport over a period of time Achievement at national team and international levels; team and individual records will be considered Leadership and character Sportsmanship and integrity Contribution to the sport following competitive career Builder Category Builders are individuals who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions to the development, advancement and promotion of volleyball in Canada and may include volunteer or paid administrators, coaches, managers, authors or others. Contribution to the development or advancement of the sport of volleyball in Canada Commitment and dedication over an extended period of time Creativity or innovation in the sport Candidate Pool: Administrators in the sport including current and former members of the VC Executive Committee or other committees of the Association Individuals/consultants who have represented VC on organizations affiliated with VC at national or international levels Authors who have produced material promoting the sport in Canada or contributing to the technical development of the sport Coaches or managers of teams who have made an outstanding contribution to the development of the sport in Canada Coach Category Coaches to be recognized by this award are individuals by whose efforts and expertise in the development and training of volleyball athletes and teams has made an outstanding and extraordinary contribution to the sport of volleyball in Canada. Coaches must be retired from providing instruction (at the level they are being recognized) for a period of three (3) years. Technical advancement of the sport as a coach Ability to develop high performance athletes and teams Sense of fair play and sportsmanship Innovation and creativity in teaching the sport Contribution to national team programs Candidate Pool: Former high performance coaches at the club, provincial or university levels Former national team coaches Age class coaches who have demonstrated an ability to develop elite athletes 3

Referees Category Referees nominated for induction in the Hall of Fame are individuals whose efforts and expertise in the development and training of volleyball referees, or in the performance of their duties as referees, have exhibited exemplary skill and commitment. Their dedication and proficiency should have resulted in the promotion and development of volleyball. Contribution to the training and development of other referees Recognized ability as a referee at the national and/or international level Candidate Pool: Current or former national or international rated referees Team Category Teams that win a medal at a major international competition including but not limited to: World Cup/Championships, Pan American or Olympic Games will automatically be considered for induction into the Hall of Fame at the next Annual Meeting following their achievement. Submission Information All nominations for the Hall of Fame should be submitted to Volleyball Canada. Nominations must be complete and accurate before being considered by the Awards & Alumni Committee. Criteria for Nomination The nominee must be a Canadian citizen, a resident of Canada for a minimum of 5 years, born in Canada, or made their distinguished contribution to the sport of volleyball in Canada. Process for Nominations All nominations must be submitted as per the attached nomination form, typewritten or legibly printed, and shall contain a complete record of the merits and achievements of each candidate. Any member of Volleyball Canada may submit nominations including; Provincial or Territorial Volleyball Association members (staff, coaches, referees, and athletes), staff of the National Office or any member of the Awards and Alumni Committee. The VC staff liaison will compile and circulate a list of the nominees, complete with nomination forms and supporting documents, and a selection ballot, to members of the committee. Committee members will then complete the selection ballot with their choice of candidate in all categories in which they deem themselves knowledgeable. The Hall of Fame selection will then be forwarded to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors of Volleyball Canada for approval. The Awards and Alumni Committee reserves the right to exclude nominees from consideration for unceremonious or criminal acts detrimental to the ideals and objectives of Volleyball Canada or the Volleyball Canada Awards and Alumni Program, or any of its member or affiliate organizations and the sport of volleyball. Any inductee selected to a National Hall of Fame (e.g. the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, The Canadian Olympic Committee Hall of Fame, Canadian Sports Award, etc.) shall be automatically recommended to the Awards and Alumni Committee for inclusion on the ballot for consideration at the next appropriate awards ceremony. 4

In order to protect the integrity of the awards program, the Awards and Alumni Committee will determine the final list of awards to be presented in any given year during the time of the Volleyball Canada Convention. Induction Ceremony and Dinner The Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held in conjunction with the Volleyball Canada Annual Convention in the format of a dinner or cocktail reception. Individuals to be inducted into the Hall of Fame will be invited to attend the reception at the expense of Volleyball Canada. An appropriate recognition gift will be presented to all inductees in addition to having their name inscribed on the Hall of Fame recognition plaques that will be prominently displayed at the national office of Volleyball Canada. Volleyball Canada will issue a media release following the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies informing the media/regional partners. 5

Nomination Form The Hall of Fame nomination form must be completed in full to be considered eligible. Forms must be typewritten or clearly printed. Please include any supporting documentation including photographs, articles or other available information up to a maximum of three (3) original pages. A separate nomination form must be completed for each nominee. PART C: ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND HONOURS 1. Meritorious Achievements: Please list any awards, honors or meritorious achievements bestowed upon the nominee during, or as a result of their career. Please include dates and related information. 2. Please list the nominee s personal attributes with regard to skill, character, dedication and overall contribution to the sport. 3. Please provide any additional comments concerning the nominee s contribution to the sport of volleyball or provide any general information you feel warrants consideration by the Awards & Alumni Committee.
