Movin 2 Math Jack Hartmann Standard: Number Sense, Concepts and Operations Skill/ Concept: Counting from 1-100 Extension activities: Innovations: Have students suggest your own movements for each group of tens: Pat knees 1-10, jump forward and back for 11-20 etc. Have a 100 day: Have students predict how far 100 steps would be from a given starting point. Take 100 steps and see who predicted the closest. Paint 100 handprints and see how far they stretch. Ask students to predict which one will be the longest distance- 100 handprints or 100 steps? Compare the two distances. Ask each student to bring in 100 of any item. Compare items brought in using vocabulary terms such as shape, size, volume, weight. Have 3 different jars with different amounts of the same items inside. In one jar place 100 items in the other 2 jars place different amounts. Have students predict which jar is the 100 jar. Extension Activities Math connection Act out the song using gummy fish and have students add one fish at a time. Number sentences could be introduced: One fish plus one fish = two fish. Allow opportunities to act out the song at centers using flannel pieces, puppets or fish on Popsicle sticks. Language Arts Connection Create Innovations of Five Little Fish by using different animals or objects such as butterflies, pigs, kittens etc. Use this opportunity to discuss settings as you create the innovation with your class. What setting should we use for butterflies? Where would we find pigs? Literature Connection Over in the Ocean by Jack Hartmann- A counting and rhyming sea life story. Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister- A story of sharing and friendship. Swimmy by Leo Lionni- A story of working together and cooperation. Cooking Connection- Create a cup of fish with your students by pouring blue jello into clear cups. When the jello is partially set in about an hour add 5 gummy fish until set. Eat and enjoy!

Penguin Sorting Materials Needed: Penguin color sort Page Scissors Sorting mats Directions: Cut apart penguin sorting cards and laminate. Begin using the penguin sorting page as a whole group instructional activity. Ask children to notice a way that some of the penguins are alike or different (color, size). When given the response that some of the penguins are the same colors, ask Children what colors they see. While children are listing the colors, place one of each color penguins on the 5 way sorting mats. Call on children to place the remaining penguins in the same color sorting mat. When finished sorting, have students observe that the penguins are now sorted by color likeness groups. Penguin cards can be placed back into one large group for students to observe that the penguins can also be sorted by size. How many sizes do students observe? Repeat the sorting process on 3 sorting mats, allowing students to sort by size. This activity can also be laminated and used as a center activity or as an individual sorting activity.
