Ted Gosen, Associate Director of Athletics/Media Relations San Diego Toreros (2-2) @ Texas-San Antonio this Sunday... Face San Diego State on Nov. 29th GAME #5: The USD Toreros (2-2), under the direction of 13th-year head coach Brad Holland, continue their four-game road swing with a contest this Sunday at Texas-San Antonio (2 pm CT). UTSA, with a record of 1-3, will play Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday before hosting the Toreros. RADIO/WEBCAST: Sunday's game will be broadcast delayed on CASH 1700 AM at 3:00 p.m. (PT) with Chris Ello, who is filling in for Jim Stone, calling the play-by-play. The game can also be heard via the internet live at www.usdtoreros.com through the Toreros All-Access package. SERIES RECORD: This is the first meeting between USD and Texas-San Antonio. BRAD HOLLAND (13TH YEAR): Coach Brad Holland (UCLA, 1979) is in his 13th season with the Toreros' program. Last year he guided the Toreros to an 18-12 overall mark and semifinal appearance at the WCC Tournament. Holland entered this season with 126 wins over the past eight seasons, including a personal-best 20 wins in 1999-2000. Four seasons ago he directed the Toreros to an overall 18-12 record and 2nd place finish in the WCC at 10-4. USD won its first WCC Tournament title and played in the 2003 NCAA Tournament for the first time in 16 years. Holland's USD career mark heading into the UTSA game is 184-164; including two years at CS Fullerton, his overall coaching record is 207-195. He notched his 200th career victory with the team's 86-78 road win at Saint Mary's. His home win over USF last Feb. 9th made him USD s all-time winningest coach for the men s program with 161 victories at the time; he passed Jim Brovelli (160-131; 1973-84). Holland, who played four years at UCLA (1976-79), was the 14th player taken in the 1st round of the 1979 NBA draft by the LA Lakers. He was a member of the 1980 NBA L.A. Lakers championship team. Brad and his wife Leslie, who reside in Carlsbad, have three children: twin daughters Kristin and Lisa, 2005 USD graduates, and a son, Kyle. NIR COHEN OUT 4-6 WEEKS: Nir Cohen, a 6-foot-7, 245-pound senior forward/ center from Israel, will be sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks after suffering a fracture to the third metacarpal (middle finger) in his left hand. The injury occurred in the afternoon shootaround before the Point Loma game on Nov. 16th during a defensive drill against the scout team running the PLNU offense. Cohen said he was hit by a teammate s elbow. Through two games Cohen was averaging 14.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg while shooting 60% from the field and 76.9 percent from the free throw line. TOREROS FALL TO LOYOLA-CHICAGO: Loyola-Chicago's Leon Young posted his first double-double of the season to help lead LUC (4-1) to a hard-fought, 69-55 victory over San Diego (2-2) Monday night at the Gentile Center. The victory was the Ramblers ninth straight at home versus a non-league foe, while USD saw its two-game winning streak snapped. The Toreros, who defeated Loyola 90-57 last season in San Diego, raced out to an early 10-3 lead before the Ramblers scored 11 unanswered points to seize a 14-10 advantage they would never surrender. After a USD basket, Loyola went on a 14-2 run to take a 28-14 lead with 9:33 left in the half. In the second half, San Diego would close the gap to 46-43 with 9:43 left to go, but Blake Schilb tallied a conventional three-point play to ignite a 9-0 Rambler run that gave LU control of the contest. Schilb, who was held without a field goal for the only time in his career in last year s meeting with San Diego, posted a game-high 18 points, 10 of which came from the foul line, and added three rebounds and three steals. Young notched his first double-double since Feb. 18, with 17 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, while J.R. Blount reached double figures for the seventh straight contest, tallying 12 points. The two teams combined for 46 turnovers in the contest and the Loyola defense held the Toreros in check to just 38 percent shooting from the field. San Diego received 16 points from Brandon Johnson, 14 points from Ross DeRogatis, and 11 points plus 9 boards from Gyno Pomare. 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, California 92110-2492 619/260-4745 Fax: 619/260-2990 E-Mail: tgosen@sandiego.edu - www.usdtoreros.com

USD s tenacious defense put the clamps on PLNU in the first half in taking a 44-19 intermission lead, and junior center Gyno Pomare led the way with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Theo White came off the bench to chip in with 10 points and 9 rebounds as the Toreros built their lead to as many as 35 points in the 2nd half before cruising to their 74-51 win. Seven minutes into the game it was a four-point contest with USD holding a 13-9 advantage. From there the Toreros went on an 18-0 run to forge ahead 31-9 with 5:18 left in the half, and the Toreros were in control the rest of the way. Every Torero played except for senior Nir Cohen who broke his left hand during the team s afternoon shoot-around. Brandon Johnson and Chris Lewis each chipped in with 9 points each, and Danny Brown and Ross DeRogatis added 7 points apiece. For the game USD shot 44.3 percent from the field (27-61) and outrebounded the Sea Lions, 54-42. TOREROS HOLD OFF UCSD TRITONS: The USD Toreros evened their record at 1-1 with tonight s 74-69 home victory over the visiting UC San Diego Tritons. Senior guard Ross DeRogatis scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the 2nd half as the Toreros overcame a 34-33 halftime deficit. For the second straight game USD received double digit scoring from DeRogatis, Gyno Pomare (15 points), Nir Cohen (14 points) and Brandon Johnson (13 points). The scrappy Tritons jumped out to a 7 point lead five minutes into the 2nd half, taking a 45-38 lead on two free throws by Shane Poppen. Two straight Theo White buckets got USD right back into the mix, and the game stayed close the rest of the way. USD took its first lead of the 2nd half at 57-56 from two free throws by Kyle Price. USD would lead the rest of the way, going up by as many as 7 points at 68-61 on a three-pointer from DeRogatis. UCSD closed to within 72-69 with 15 seconds left, but Brandon Johnson iced the game with two free throws with 10 seconds to go. For the game USD shot 53.5% from the field (23-43), but were outrebounded 26-24. UCSD was led by Robby Peters with 17 points as he canned 5-of-7 three-pointers. The Tritons made 9-of-15 treys for the game. TOREROS DROP OPENER: The Toreros traveled to Stephen F. Austin for their season opener this past Saturday and came away with a 71-62 road loss... Despite 18 points from Brandon Johnson and 15 from Nir Cohen, USD couldn't overcome 1-of-13 shooting from beyond the threepoint arc and 20 turnovers to just 7 assists... Gyno Pomare chipped in with 11 points and 9 rebounds, and Ross DeRogatis totaled 11 points, but missed all 6 of his three-point attempts... one bright spot was USD's free throw shooting - they converted on 21-of-26 attempts (80.8%)... host SFA was paced by forward Josh Alexander (18 points) and made 6-of-12 treys as a team. TORERO TIDBITS: USD, which plays 7 of its first 10 games on the road, began their recent road swing with Monday's game at Loyola University-Chicago... Making his 2006-07 debut for the Toreros against PLNU was sophomore guard Ray Murdock... The 6-3 wing from Phoenix, who played in all 30 games and started 25 last season, missed most of the preseason practices and the first two games with an ankle injury incurred last spring... Murdock came off the bench seven minutes into the game, played 14 minutes and finished with two points and four rebounds... Gyno Pomare, who tallied 18 games in double digits last season, has reached double digits in the team's first four games and is tied for the club lead in scoring at 14.0 ppg (w/brandon Johnson)... Red-shirt freshman Chris Lewis, playing just his 2nd collegiate game, came off the bench to score 9 points, grab 8 rebounds and dish off 2 assists in win over Point Loma... He earned his first collegiate start at Loyola-Chicago. SCOUTING TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO: The UTSA Roadrunners take a 1-3 record into their Wednesday afternoon game with CS Fullerton... after opening the season with a 50-46 home win over A&M International, UTSA dropped a 64-54 home decision to Texas-Pan American... This past weekend they dropped road contests at Washington State (67-44) and Gonzaga (92-48)... through 4 games, guard Isaiah Allen is the lone Roadrunner averaging double digits (14.0 ppg)... Allen scored a game-high 22 points in the loss at Gonzaga... head coach Brooks Thompson (1st Year) has 7 lettermen and 1 starter back from last year's 11-17 club...
