CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Tampa Bay Chapter- American Singles Golf Association March 2010 Golf Committee CHEVAL COUNTRY CLUB OUTING On Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 7 (also now known as Saints Day) there were 47 ASGA members and guests who braved the barely 60 degree temperature and played a casual round of golf at the beautiful Cheval Country Club. There were occasional bursts of sunlight through the omnipresent clouds which lured a few golfers into shedding their first layer of outer garments. Most quickly donned them again soon after and resembled the rest of us Michelin tire-looking stiffs.or was that Pillsbury dough boys and girls? Moving along, the winners of the closestto-the-pin contests were: Else Friborg, Cynthia Martell and Rich Schonwald. Winners received a free round of golf donated by the Cheval Country Club Pro Shop. Rich is an ASGA member in the Philadelphia chapter who was in the Tampa Bay area for a visit. He magnanimously re-gifted his free round of golf back to ASGA-Tampa Bay. It will be raffled off or given as a prize at another ASGA outing. Thanks again Rich! If you noticed and are wondering why there isn t a second man s name on the proxy winning list (yes, there were four proxies available for the taking two for men, two for women), well you ll just have to ask the men Whassup?. A hearty thank you to 47 ASGAers and guests who chilled out at Cheval February 7 th. Cynthia Martell CYPRESS CREEK OUTING Cypress Creek, in Ruskin, was host to our formal outing on Saturday, Feb. 20th. We finally had a picture perfect day for golf, which was a welcome relief after the chill of golfing at Cheval earlier in the month. There were 24 attendees, who turned in some very good scores, requiring a score card playoff to determine winners. This was our first outing utilizing the step aside format and it seemed to work well for pace of play. All-in-all it was a very successful day. Thanks to all who participated, and congratulations to the winners: 1st Place : Sharon Leavitt, Allen Richards, Bill Ketchersid and Diane Jennings. 2nd Place: Larry Klotz, Patricia Morris, Peter Murdock and Don Davis. 3rd Place went to: Louis Lakatos, John Greene, Theresa Jones and Blake Shelton (guest). Start-time will be 5:30 p.m. Our 9-hole league agreement runs April 2, 2010 thru Oct. 31, 2010. For those wishing to play prior to April 2 they will honor $14 for later play. Just mention our ASGA league starts in April. We hope all Hillsborough league members will come out and play at the new location. Many thanks to those who helped Sharon find a course and get us set up at "The Claw". Central League Central League will resume play at The Eagles, 16101 Nine Eagles Dr., in Oldsmar, on Wednesday evenings, beginning April 21st at 5:30 p.m.. Cost is $10 with tax. Co-captains for this league are Cynthia Martell and Diane Jennings. Pinellas League The Pinellas Summer League returns to Cove Cay April 22. Stay West, young-spirited men and women! Join the fun and fellowship at: Cove Cay Country Club 2612 Cove Cay Dr, in Clearwater, each Thursday at 5:00 beginning April 22. Cost is $12 including tax. Cove Cay is a fun, challenging course, providing both safe and go-for-it paths to glory. After golf, we venture forth to a nearby restaurant to discuss how wonderfully we played. Wouldn t you like to do that? Well, then, join us!! Our challenge this year is that US-19 road construction can confuse and elongate the trip to Cove Cay. The course is located on the east side of US-19, steps north of the intersection of US-19 and Haines Bayshore Rd. However, they ve cut off south-bound left-turn access to both the Cove Cay entrance and Haines Bayshore. So, here s the solution using US-19 as your straight-away: 2 For those using US-19 from north of Gulf to Bay (60), go about 2 ½ miles south to Haines Bayshore, then slide right onto the local US-19 side road, continuing ½ mile to U-turn under US-19 at Whitney Rd. U-turn right back onto US-19 going back north for that ½ mile just beyond Haines Bayshore into the Cove Cay entrance on the right. For those using US-19 from south of Roosevelt/East Bay, no changes for you. After Roosevelt/East Bay, Haines Bayshore is just over the next hump/mogul of US-19. Cove Cay entrance is just beyond Haines Bayshore on your right. For further information, contact John Greene, Pinellas League Captain 727-482-5606 John.greene01@yahoo.com Social Committee Tampa Bay ASGA Goes to the Dogs... On January 23rd, our first social event of the new year proved to be a first place winner as twenty-five of our members enjoyed a fun afternoon at the greyhound dog races. Derby Lanes in St. Petersburg treated us very well and provided us with a great buffet while we cheered on our favorite pups. Even though most of us left with lighter wallets and none of us needed Brinks guards to escort us home, a good time was had by all. Super Bowl Super Party Golfing on February 7 th may have been cold for some, but any chill was quickly dashed at the Super Bowl party hosted by Gay Wiese. Gay generously opened up her home to about 65 of our members and served an incredible array of delicious food and drink. T.V. sets were strategically placed where those seriously interested in the game could watch every play without noise or interruption. Then there were those viewers watching in the rowdy room.enough said! Thank you for a fantastic time, Gay. We appreciate all the planning, the time and the work that you put in to making this a great day for all of us. (Continued on page 3)

When What Where Sat, March. 20 Murdered to Death, 7 p.m. Carrollwood Playhouse Sat, April 3 Horse Races, 11 a.m. Tampa Bay Downs And, it s never too early to talk about the Christmas party. This year our party is on Saturday, December 4 th and is going to be held at the East Lake Woodlands Country Club. A casual ongoing event Several of our members had a fun time attending a couple of the singles dances at the Countryside Country Club. This is a great venue for a dance. The ballroom at the club is very accommodating, has a nice dance floor and the DJ plays a variety of dance music. These dances are sponsored by the Suncoast Singles Club. There is a nominal cost for admission and there is a cash bar. Light hors d oeuvres are usually served. The next dance is on Friday, March 19 th. For more details, check out the Suncoast Singles Web site at www.suncoastsinglesclub.com Fifty-Fifty Winner: Ken Polkoszek was the lucky winner of $64 in the 50/50 drawing, at the February general meeting. Congratulations, Ken! Handicap Coordinator Gay Wiese and Hunter Dixon are most improved golfers for last month. Congratulations! It is still not too late to sign up for a handicap. ASGA-Tampa is considered a Golf Club without Real Estate, so the handicap you have with ASGA is valid if you want to play in any tournaments elsewhere. Please remember to either go on the national website or call national and update your handicap on a regular basis, as this information is used for pairings in the monthly formal outings. From the President Olympic athletes from around the world gathered last month on their quest to "Go for the Gold". Now I would like to propose a quest for Tampa Bay ASGA: "Go for the Gold Member". (apologies to Austin Powers). I invite each current ASGA member to invite one new person (or more) to attend a general membership meeting or to an outing. We hope once they see us' they will also want to join in our fun! Remember, the more, the merrier! It's a great way for us to increase our mingling capacity and make new friends. (Continued on page 4) 3

The top two people (one man, one woman) who bring in the most new guests in the next 60 days win a prize! To have your guest counted, you need to register them with Jean Trunks. "Fun, fellowship and fairways. Can't have too many of any." We hope once they see us' they will also want to join in our fun! Remember, the more, the merrier! It's a great way for us to increase our mingling capacity and make new friends. Quote of the Month: If you think it's hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball. CELEBRATING 17YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MARCH, 2010 Event Dates: Thursday, May 27 Sunday, May 30, 2010 With great excitement and anticipation, we re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our Reunion in Pinehurst again. The Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largest-attended event each year with attendance soaring over 400 in years past. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 27-30. Prices have been lowered $23 on the standard package price and $140 on the room by myself package price, as compared to 2008 pricing. As such, we anticipate a quick sell-out. Pinehurst was the site of our Memorial Day weekend reunion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Packages start at $489 per person, based on double occupancy and $639 per person based on single occupancy. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday on No. 3) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst The standard package is a great deal. If you priced this on your own, you d easily pay twice as much as what you get as an ASGA member. You can t fine a value like this at any great golf resort in the country. Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. To join ASGA, simply go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Included in the Standard Package: 4 days / 3 nights, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners and welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (heavy hors d oeurves and 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 18), picnic-style cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sit-down dinner and 3 lavish buffet breakfasts in the main dining room Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (does he dance?) All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site transportation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 20% discount on spa services or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon. Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. U. S. Open Returns to Pinehurst in 2014 For the first time in Open history, one venue is the site of both the men s U. S. Open Championship and the women s U. S. Open Championship in the same year. Both championships will be hosted by Pinehurst in 2014. Pinehurst was also the site of the 1951 Ryder Cup as well as the 1999 and 2005 U. S. Opens. We re proud to see the American Singles Golf Association host their event at Pinehurst again this year, said Sara Green, sales manager at Pinehurst. The showing ASGA had in years past is a testament to the match we have with our resort and your members. Pinehurst has a tradition that goes way back into the last century. All of the greats have played there. The No. 2 course will not be part of our standard package, but hopefully, you ll have an opportunity to play it at a reduced rate due to the anticipated aerification schedule. See website for details. Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com 6
