Waterline FLAFAYETTE SAILING CLUB www.lafayettesailingclub.net VOLUME 4 2011 COMMODORE S MESSAGE Hello sailors, The summer sailing season is in full swing with racing, cruising, moonlight sails, and just sailing for fun. We have completed the Mississinewa Mini Cruise and a big thanks goes out to Ray Justice and family for organizing and hosting this fun event. We had wind that was just like Lake Freeman. The first day had white caps and almost too much wind, followed by a perfect wind to sail all over the lake. The last day started with nice wind that switched directions and went to dead calm. A fun time was had by everyone who went to Lake Mississinewa. The next big summer cruise to the Mackinac Island area will be over with by the time you read this article. It s always fun to do a Great Lake Summer Cruise and I will tell more about this cruise in the next newsletter. The Board of Governors Regatta and picnic will be August 5, 6 and 7. Friday evening August the 5 th has a Raft up in the secret cove, for anyone wanting to stay overnight on the lake. Saturday August 6 has racing at noon, Sunday the 7 th has racing at 1:00pm. Sunday evening we will have the BOG picnic starting at 5:30pm. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and beverages will be provided by the Club. Please contact Tony Lavish so we can get a head count for how much food to buy. His email is ichi_seishin @ yahoo.com or Phone 574 965 4123 Please try to Raft-up, or race both Saturday and Sunday or just come to the picnic Sunday evening and have fun. LSC Business News to follow: 1

The idea of restructuring the Club dues was again discussed at the last Board of Governor s meeting, and I ve appointed a 3 person Committee to study the dues and prepare a recommendation. The Committee consists of Glenn Kats as Chair, Dave Klenosky, and LaTrisha Anderson. The information will be presented to the Club membership at the Fall Banquet. I m expecting a Membership Dues increase will be necessary to balance expenditures and income. I ll talk more about this at the BOG Picnic. Any increase in Membership Dues will be determined by a 2/3 vote of the active members present at the Fall Banquet. I hope everyone will try to sail and visit the Club Harbor this season. If you are having trouble getting to the Harbor, please remember to make arrangements to mow under your boat regularly. We all have a responsibility to keep the Harbor area looking nice. Nothin but Fun, Kirk BOG Picnic: Sunday, August 7th, 5:30pm The BOG Picnic will close out the Board of Governor s Regatta Weekend. This year the LSC will provide hamburgers, hotdogs, and beverages. All LSC members are welcome. This is a very casual picnic hosted by the LSC. The Race Committee will award prizes to the racers, and expect a little business news from Commodore Kirk. Please bring a covered dish to share, tableware, and your lawn chairs. This will surely be another fun event that the LSC will remember. Expect good sailing stories, good food, good friends, and a good time. The BOG hopes to see everybody there. Please contact Tony Lavish so we can get a head count, for how much food to buy. His email is ichi_seishin @ yahoo.com or Phone 574 965 4123 2

LSC Spring Clean-Up in review The 2011 Spring Clean-up has come and gone. The Grounds Committee and Club Fleet Committee had several projects to complete before the start of the sailing seasons, and proof is in the pictures. Many Club members lent their assistance, so, many thanks for your help. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks, Thanks. 3

Lake Mississinewa Summer Solstice Cruise in review: During the weekend of June 24th, 25th, & 26th LSC members ventured back to Lake Mississinewa for some social time and sailing. On Friday night Sharon Justice and Betty, Ray s sister, had sirloin burgers and side dishes ready for the group to feast on after sailing. The rest of us brought along a covered dish to share. Nobody left hungry. Some spent the rest of the night socializing around the pretty campfire, others took off for a late evening sail. On Saturday everybody was ready for some sailing. We had plenty of sunshine and some casual puffs. All of the sailboats looked spectacular on the water. Nothin but Fun! On Saturday evening Sharon and Betty prepared some vegetable soup and Sloppy Joes. Once again; way too much but very much appreciated and delicious. 5

Classifieds LSC SHIPS STORE: Golf Shirt- Gold..$ 29.50 Golf Hat.. $12.50 Sun Hat $16.50 T-Shirt- Blue $11.50 Jacket- Gold.$39.50 Call or see Dave Keller at LSC events. (davekeller@sugardog.com) FOR SALE: Laser sailboat with recently refinished dagger board and rudder, several new ropes (read: sheets), new dagger board stop, sails. This is a good boat for both a beginner and a more advanced sailor. Toe boards are not shown in the pictures, as I have taken them off for refinishing, but they are included. Also included is a great book on sailing and rigging techniques. Asking $550, located in West Lafayette. Contact Brant Dalton at brant.dalton@gmail.com for more details. For pix see: http://tippecanoe.craigslist.org/boa/2356434701.html FOR SALE: Sunfish Sailboat w/ trailer, $1050. Hannis Thompson, (past member) @765-743-3337 NOTICE: Visit the LSC website and click on Useful Links to find: Swim Skinny s music and specifically "Last Request" -- the song he played for us at the 2010 Fall Banquet (which was inspired, at least in part, by Dave Fisher and his boat "Thumper"). FOR SALE: 2004 Tohatsu long shaft, 4 horse, 4 stroke motor. These are designed for sailboats and are not suited for the river. This motor is in great shape. No scratches dings, damage, or wear of any kind. I used this for about 10 hours and then proceeded to buy a larger boat. At the time these went for about $1300 and I imagine they are a bit more expensive now. This model has a small internal tank which is perfect for several trips in and out of the harbor. You can also attach an external tank if you like. If you are not familiar with Tohatsu, they are the people that make Mercury motors. You will find this to be identical to the 2004 Mercury 4 horse, Mercury just wanted an extra $150 for the black paint job. This sale includes the motor, fuel line, tool kit and manual...no external tank. $800.00 Cash only. 6 Kevin @ 765-479-3173
