The weather finally allowed boat projects to start, which combined with club projects, made for a busy May! We held our first social of the year, completed the B-Dock floatation replacement, and started work to fix a leak in the clubhouse roof, among many other minor pop-up tasks. The Meet and Greet social was held on May 19 and was attended by new members Austin Bayes and Justin Dyck. I thought it was a great meal and the BOG did a great job of it. Thank you to the board members and also Gwen Bonifield, Genee Kubin, and Julie Barth for taking the time to make sure the social was a success. A new text or email method was used to make reservations easier and more convenient for both the membership and the calling committee. The floatation replacement project on B-Dock was completed on May 20. Sixty-five floats were replaced on B Dock and six more on the powerboat slip. The work was completed without issue in two days by a local independent contractor brought to our attention by Bart Peace and Jim Smith. The east end of B Dock and the power boat slip are noticeably more stable and now floating at the correct height above the water. The contractor estimated approximately 25% of the floats replaced were water logged. Dave Bonifield spent considerable time coordinating with 3 contractors before the project was completed by the third. Paul Schye sorted out insurance questions and Bruce Ward, Paul McCausland, and Bill Sorensen provided advice on other issues. There are a few boards on the docks to replace and other normal maintenance yet to be done. Please contact Dave Bonifield to volunteer. During the clubhouse cleanup work party a roof leak was observed. The leak was generally aligned with either the cupola or the light mast on top of the clubhouse. The Wednesday Breakfast Group climbed up on the roof and determined the cupola to be the cause of the leak then removed the old one. A new cupola is being built to replace it and is expected to be complete by the time this WindWord is issued. The small area underneath the cupola on the clubhouse roof needs to be shingled. Anyone with roofing experience looking to earn work credits please contact Gene Plehal for details and to volunteer. Thank you to Amos Cape who planted the flowers in front of the clubhouse again this year. The work that goes into all these activities is largely behind-the-scenes and most members may be unaware of the efforts of the members who just do it. It seems there is always something that needs to be done. US Sailing will hold their Level One instructor training class on June 7 10 (8AM-5PM). We ll be sharing the clubhouse for classroom instruction and the dinghy dock for sailing activities. Please extend the guest instructors and students your courtesy and assistance. During the final exam on Sunday morning June 10, I d ask the Sunday Breakfast Group to please plan a different location for that Sunday to allow a quiet classroom for the testing. (Courteous use of restrooms and showers is naturally available for members and guests during the final exam).
