The San Francisco Yacht Club 2008 Youth Sailing Brochure Learn to sail, improve your skills, and join the fun at The San Francisco Yacht Club this summer by taking sailing classes. Lessons are offered to youths between the ages of 8 and 18. The program emphasis is first and foremost FUN, based on a proven curriculum from U.S. Sailing. Private lessons are also available, and occasionally we offer classes for adults. Non-members are welcome, and scholarships are available. The San Francisco Yacht Club 2008 Youth Sailing Brochure Class Descriptions: Race Team Ages 13-19 Boats: 420 dinghy, 29er skiff, and Lasers An organizational meeting will be held in early January, when race team sailors must fill out a planning worksheet. The Race Team sails year-round. During the school year practices are Friday evenings, and at least one day each weekend. During the summer, classes meet Monday through Friday, from 10-4:30. 2008 events will include U.S. Youth Champs, FJ Nationals, the local BAYS regattas, Junior Olympics, and many other regattas. Harbor Mice _ Ages 7-9 Boat: JY Trainer Prerequisite: Pass the swim test Entry-level students 10 and younger will usually begin with the stable JY Trainer, which is a simplified Optimist pram. These classes stay in the harbor at first, and place 2 friends in each boat. This class covers safety, rigging, basic boat handling, and knots. Sailors advance to the Optimist class. Optimist (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) _ Ages 9-13 Prerequisite: JY class or. The 8-foot Optimist is the international standard in youth sail training. The Opti is specifically designed for junior sailors under 120lbs in weight. We offer morning and afternoon Optimist classes for beginners, intermediates, and expert racers. At the beginning of each session the class will be broken up into three groups based on skill level. Boat ownership is encouraged but not required. Our office has a list of used boats. Flying Junior / Laser / Radial / 420 _ Ages: 12-16 Beginner and Intermediate levels FJs are: the standard in high school and collegiate sailing, this 2-person boat will be used to teach safety and good seamanship in a social setting. This course will focus on intermediate skills, but will also accommodate beginners, who will sail as crew before steering. Sailors advance from this class to the Race Team. Lasers are: the ultimate in single-handed sailing! The laser can support a wide range of sailors from 110lbs and up. Sailors are encouraged to bring their own boats to this class although currently the SFYC has several boats for class use. Sailors interested in this class should be comfortable sailing by themselves and getting wet! J/24 Ages 8-16 Boat: J/24 With three J/24 s ready to go the Bay will be your playground. In this class there will be 4-5 students per boat and 1 instructor. Safety, Seamanship skills and fun will be the focal
point of this class. Navigation, anchoring, knots, and becoming a better helmsperson will also be introduced in this class. Last summer this was the class to be in and this summer is no different. Optimist Race Team _ Optimist Race Team is for sailors who attend regattas throughout the Bay Area, up and down the west coast, and nation-wide. Optimist regattas are organized into green, white, blue, and red fleets. Green fleet is for beginners of any age. White fleet sailors are 8-10 years old and are scored separate from the older sailors in the blue and red fleets. Boat ownership is encouraged but not required. Sailors are required to load and unload the fantastic 6-boat trailer. Pricing is the same as the seasonal programs, with an added fee for away regattas. The San Francisco Yacht Club Youth Sailing Application Form To enroll, please fill out the application and include payment for the classes or race program applied for. Members can sign up before April 2 nd, and enrollment is open to non-members on April 2 nd. Classes will be formed as they fill, or on May 5 th, after which vacancies and wait lists will be published on www.sfycraceteam.com. If a camp is overbooked, a refund will be given or credited toward a different session. Make checks payable to The San Francisco Yacht Club and mail to: SFYC Youth Sailing 98 Beach Road Belvedere, CA 94920-0379 REFUND POLICY Notice of cancellation must be made at least 4 weeks prior to the start of the session to receive a full refund. Notice of cancellation after that time will result in a 50% refund. There will be no refunds after a session begins. All refunds are subject to a $25.00 fee. STAFF Staff members are US Sailing-certified instructors who have received American Red Cross First-Aid and CPR training. The curriculum is developed from the US Sailing Certification Series, the national standard for quality sailing instruction. WATER SAFETY REQUIREMENTS All students will be given a swimming checkout on the first day of class. The checkout will be with lifejackets on and will include: 1. Swimming 50 yd unaided. 2. Capsizing and righting a sailing dinghy Sailors will also be given a water orientation to learn self-rescue techniques with a sailboat. Failure to complete the swimming checkout will result in the sailor being dropped from the course. DISCIPLINE Behavioral problems will not be tolerated. First time offenders will not be allowed to participate in their chosen activity for an appropriate period of time. Repeat offenders may be expelled. WHAT TO WEAR You must have a US Coast Guard Approved PFD (life jacket). Bring clothing, sun protection and accessories appropriate for the weather along with a complete change of clothing. Shoes should be non-marking soft-soled and they will get wet. Wetsuits, fleece garments, and foul weather gear are recommended for cool weather, rain and wind protection. Classes are not cancelled because of weather, however, for safety concerns lessons may be taught on land if necessary.
