The Prep 62 Times November 16, 2015 Late Edition 25 CENTS Football Monday Non-Public Group 4 Football Playoffs: Johnathan Lewis throws five touchdowns as St. Peter's Prep defeats Notre Dame, 56-26 By Jason Bernstein For The Jersey Journal on November 13, 2015 10:20 PM JERSEY CITY Only a handful starters for St. Peter s Prep played major roles on last season s state championship squad. But last night, the Marauders offense delivered the kind of championship performance reminiscent of last year s playoff run. Six different Marauders scored touchdowns in the first half as fourth-seeded St. Peter s Prep, No. 8 in the NJ.com Top 20, began its state title defense with a 56-26 victory over fifth-seeded Notre Dame in the first round of the NJSIAA Non-Public, Group 4 tournament at Caven Point.

St. Peter s Prep (8-2) scored on each of its first six possessions and racked up 468 yards of total offense, and will host eighth-seeded St. Joseph (Mont.) in the semifinals next week. St. Joseph defeated top-seeded St. Augustine, 28-0 in its first-round contest. Notre Dame finishes its season with a 6-4 record. St. Peter s Prep needed just 68 seconds to take the lead as Jorge Portorreal took a short Johnathan Lewis pass 45 yards for a touchdown on the game s third play from scrimmage. Lewis, a first-year starter at quarterback, had the Marauders spread offense running to near-perfection as he added first-quarter TD passes to Masaki Aerts (10 yards) and Kolton Huber (4 yards) to make it 21-0. The visiting Fighting Irish got on the scoreboard on Xavier Lezynski s 10-yard TD pass to Justin Jantorno, but the Marauder offense immediately went back to work. Lewis completed three consecutive passes to Boston College-bound receiver K.J. Gray, the last, a 28-yard catch-and-run for a TD. Lewis and Gray teamed up for another touchdown, a 30-yard strike, to make it 49-20 with 2:58 remaining in the third quarter. Gray had seven catches for 111 yards before being forced out with an injury late in the third. Lewis, who completed passes to seven different receivers, was successful on 16 of 19 attempts for 232 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 80 yards on nine carries. ***

Non-Public Group 4 named sixth most challenging football playoff bracket in country By Bill Evans NJ Advance Media for NJ.com on November 13, 2015 9:02 AM Maxpreps.com named New Jersey's Non-Public Group 4 the sixth toughest high school football playoff bracket in the country. Overall, the bracket includes five of the top nine teams in the state. Check out the bracket with first-round matchups below. Undefeated St. Augustine is the No. 1 seed but only the ninth-ranked team in the state. Eighth-seeded and 6-3 St. Joseph (Mont.), the Hermit's first-round opponent, is ranked No. 5 in New Jersey. No. 2 Don Bosco, No. 3 Bergen Catholic and No. 8 St. Peter's - the defending champion - are also in the bracket along with Notre Dame, Paul VI and Seton Hall Prep.

*** Football playoffs, 2015: Non-Public, Group 4 preview and predictions By Patrick Lanni NJ Advance Media for NJ.com on November 09, 2015 3:02 PM; updated November 11, 2015 5:25 PM. NON-PUBLIC, GROUP 4 The favorite: It s been an 11-year title drought for Bergen Catholic, but the Crusaders are full steam ahead on Mission 17. There are a lot of question marks surrounding the return of quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, but if the Tennessee-bound senior is fully-healthy, he ll suit up, and that makes Bergen Catholic the most dangerous team in the section. In his absence, coach Nunzio Campanile has relied on the ground game and defense to get by, but with Guarantano behind center, the Crusaders will try to out-gun the field en route to their 17th state title in school history. The contenders:st. Augustine, the No. 1 seed, wanted a shot against a North Jersey parochial power, and the Hermits got what they asked for.

The last three seasons, the Hermits have lost to Don Bosco Prep twice in the first round and to St. Peter s Prep in the semifinals by a combined score of 116-35. Have the Hermits closed the gap? We ll find out when they host eighth-seeded St. Joseph (Mont.) Friday night. As for the Green Knights, defense has been their IO all season long, and in their return to Group 4, coach Augie Hoffmann will rely on stuffing the run and winning low-scoring games to get back to MetLife. To get to the final, St. Joe s will likely have to get past fourth-seeded St. Peter s Prep. The Marauders are playing their usual high-level football but lack a signature win and a 47-14 loss to Bergen Catholic in Week 1 remains a black mark on Prep s resumé. Still, Rich Hansen s team has the playmakers and offensive fire power to compete with any team in the section. On the other side of the bracket, second-seeded Don Bosco is likely awaiting a colossal semifinal showdown with rival Bergen Catholic if both teams advance to the semifinals. Two weeks ago, the Ironmen outlasted the Crusaders, 24-19, and will try to do it again to get back to the final for the first time since 2011. The dark horse: St. Joe s has a chance to be the lowest-seeded team to make it to the final. The eighth-seeded Green Knights have the defense to beat any team in the bracket, but the offense has struggled at times and that has to be concerning for the school from Montvale. Best first-round game: Brothers Nunzio and Vito Campanile will coach against each other for the first time in their careers Friday night when Bergen Catholic and Seton Hall Prep square off, but the Nunzio-led Crusaders will be a heavy favorite to advance. That s why the best the best first-round game will be in Richland where St. Augustine and St. Joseph (Mont.) square off at 7 p.m. Game we d like to see: A Bergen Catholic-Don Bosco Prep semifinal will be massive for so many reasons, but add in the fact that it might be the return of Jarrett Guarantano, and this could be one of the best in the 66-year history of this rivalry.
