Cattle and, Sheep BAKEWELL MARKET MONDAY 18 th June 2018 The fine weather continues and farmers must be getting up to date with field work related tasks because a large entry of 841 cattle was received, numbered, penned and sold. The sheep shed on the contrary was quieter with only 1131 head. A sign perhaps the lambs are not coming forward as fast as predicted. In the Prime Ring today, the barren cows at 9.30am saw 141 head maintaining recent good results. The clean cattle at Noon saw 111 head with all buyers operating and a solid performance throughout. With Alastair away in Russia, following England s bid for Football World Cup glory and no doubt enjoying some of the local Vodka at the same time it was left to Mark to sell the store cattle and he had another bumper crop of over 500 head including two large consignments of breeding cows and calves. Trade as ever was on fire with full details in Marks report. 80 Calves in for Ivor that saw some unbelievable results with calves looking exceptionally well sold at present. The Sheep section today was quieter that of late but the 744 lambs on offer averaged 249 pence, some 11 pence more on the year for another 200 lambs. 254 ewes today sold to 139 You may have noticed today that work has started on the new pens at Bakewell. We are putting around 30 new outdoor pens for Store cattle in the busy periods but can also be utilised at sheep time with better facilitates to handle more store lambs in the autumn. Hopefully they will be completed by next week when Alastair returns!
