3M Occupational Health and Environmental Safety Division 3M Respiratory Options During times of global and/or localized influenza outbreaks, available supplies of certain respirators can become constrained. 3M offers a wide variety of respiratory protection options that can be utilized in a range of settings.

However, unlike most industrial particles there are no exposure limits, such as Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL) or Threshold Limit Values (TLV) established for biological agents such as H1N1 Influenza. Assigned protection factors are listed on this chart for illustration purposes only. Fit Testing: A requirement of CSA Z94.4 for tight fitting respirators. Filtering facepieces are disposable. Certain components of reusable respirators and PAPR systems can be disposed of after each use if determined necessary. Follow the user instructions for the respirator or refer to to 3M Reusable Respirator & PAPR Cleaning document. Hood: The portion of a respirator that forms a partial seal with the face. It covers the neck and shoulders and will minimize the exposure to splashes/splatters of blood or body fluids. Head cover: The portion of a respirator that forms a partial seal with the face, does not cover the neck and shoulders and will minimize the exposure to splashes/splatters of blood or body fluids. Can be worn with some facial hair. Tight fitting facepiece: A respirator that forms a complete seal with the face. This includes a half-facepiece that covers the user s nose and mouth under the chin and a full-facepiece that covers the user s nose, eyes and mouth under the chin. QLFT: Qualitative Fit Testing - A pass/fail test method that relies on the subject s sensory response to detect a challenge agent in order to assess the adequacy of respirator fit. QNFT: Quantitative Fit Testing A test method that uses an instrument to assess the amount of leakage into the respirator in order to assess the adequacy of respirator fit. NIOSH: National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health N/A: Not Applicable
