Charlotte is 7-3 in home openers since the 2000 season. The 49ers are 20-14 all-time in season openers. In last season s opener, Shannon McCallum recorded her first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in the 49ers victory over USC. vs. East Carolina - Charlotte was a charter member of Conference USA. East Carolina, who is currently a member of Conference USA, joined the league in 2001. So Charlotte and East Carolina faced each of other for four years as members of Conference USA. The 49ers lead the all-time series, 22-7. Charlotte has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams including a 68-66 win at East Carolina in their last meeting, February 26, 2005. Former 49ers standout Sakellie Daniels led the 49ers with 16 points and eight rebounds in their last game at East Carolina. Assistant coach Krystion Obie Nelson and director of operations Sabrina Gregory both played for the 49ers in their last game at East Carolina. Preseason All-Atlantic 10 - The Charlotte 49ers, who captured the program s first conference tournament title when they won the A-10 Tournament title last season, were picked second in the preseason Atlantic 10 coaches poll. Senior guard Aysha Jones, who earned second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors last season, was a preseason first-team All-A-10 pick. Postseason Tournament - Last season, the 49ers made their eighth overall postseason tournament and their seventh straight postseason tournament appearance. Charlotte also made the program s second ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and the first since 2003. Last season the Atlantic 10 had a record eight teams earn postseason tournament bids with three (Charlotte, Temple and Xavier) going to the NCAA Tournament. While Dayton, Duquesne, George Washington, Richmond and St. Bonaventure were selected to the WNIT. Coach Karen Aston - Aston is in her third season at the helm of the 49ers women s basketball program. She has recorded a schoolrecord 41 wins in her first two seasons as head coach at Charlotte. After guiding the 49ers to the NCAA Tournament last season, she has coached in the NCAA Tournament in nine of the last 11 years and she has been a coach on a team that has reached postseason play in ten of the last 11 years. The 2007-08 season, her first season at Charlotte, she guided the 49ers to 18 wins and a berth in the WNIT. Of the 30 rookie head coaches in Division I that year, she was one of only five to lead their team to postseason play. The 49ers two previous head coaches (Katie Meier and Amanda Butler) each won 37 games in their first two seasons at Charlotte which was the school-record for wins by a coach in their first two seasons. Road Warriors - Last season, the 49ers won a school-record tying 13 games away from Halton Arena. Only six other times in school history have the 49ers won at least 10 road games. The previous school record 13 road wins came in 1989-90, Charlotte won a school-record 24 games that season. The 49ers won 12 road games in 1979-80. Charlotte posted 11 road wins in 2004-05, 1991-92 and 1990-91. The 49ers won 10 road games in 1983-84. Double-Figure Scoring Games Off The Bench - Last year for the second straight season, Charlotte had a player come off the bench and score in double-figures 19 times. McCallum, who is most likely moving into the starting lineup this season, accounted for 15 of Charlotte s 19 double-figure scoring games off the bench last season. Halton Arena- The 49ers have won 48 of their last 61 home games. Since 2001-02, the 49ers are 90-21 in Halton Arena. 20 -Point Scoring Games - Last season, the 49ers had a player score 20 points in a game 13 times. Seniors Ashley Spriggs and Aysha Jones entered last season without a 20-point scoring game in their first two seasons. Spriggs and Jones each recorded two 20-point scoring games in the 49ers first eight games. The 49ers had a player score at least 20 points in a fourgame stretch (November 21-29) which was the 30th time in school history that the 49ers have had a streak of at least four straight games with a 20-point scorer. The school record is 14 straight games (January 26, 1985-November 23, 1985) with a 20-point scorer. Reaching the 90-point mark - Last season, Charlotte scored a season-high 91 points against Charleston Southern which is the most points scored by the 49ers since scoring 90 points against Murray State, December 28, 2005. The 49ers are 43-4 all-time when they score at least 90 points. Reaching the 70-point mark - Last season, The 49ers were 10-3 this season when they score at least 70 points with victories over UAB, Fresno State, SMU, UNC Asheville, Davidson, Charleston Southern, Saint Louis, Duquesne twice and Temple. In the program s history, Charlotte is 338-84 when they score at least 70 points. 516 And Counting - The 49ers recorded the program s 500th win with their 72-64 win over Davidson, December 9. Charlotte now has 516 wins in the program s history. In the 35-year history of the program, the 49ers have moved to Division I and changed conferences four times. Seven coaches have led the team, starting with Judy Wilkins, now director of athletics Judy Rose through current coach Karen Aston. Milestone Wins #1 - Defeated Salem, 58-43, 1/27/75 #100 - Defeated ASU, 71-67, 1/26/83 #200 - Defeated ETSU, 62-57, 12/9/89 #300 - Defeated UCLA, 60-50, 1/2/95 #400 - Defeated VCU, 81-72, 12/7/03 #500 - Defeated Davidson, 72-64, 12/9/08 Charlotte Signed Four Players For the 2010-11 Season - The 49ers signed Tiona Burley of Camilla, Georgia, Ny Hammonds of Concord, North Carolina, Gabby Tyler of Emporia, Virginia and Lanie Whitaker of Boiling Springs, South Carolina to the 2010-11 roster on November 11, 2009. Burley, a 6-foot-3 center from Camilla, Georgia s Mitchell County High School, averaged 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks per game last season as a junior. Burley earned first-team All-Region honors after helping Mitchell Country record a runner-up finish in Region I-AA. She was named Co-MVP of her Mitchell County team. She will have her jersey retired at the end of the season. She played AAU basketball for the Georgia Blazers. Hammonds, a 5-foot-5 guard from North Carolina s Concord High School, averaged 17 points, 7 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game as a junior. Last season, Hammonds became the first Cabarrus County female player to score her 1,000th career point as a junior. As a sophomore, she was named MVP of the State Tournament after helping Concord High School capture the 2008 3A State Championship. She scored 21 points in 22 minutes of action in the 2008 state championship game. In 2008, she helped Concord High School tally a 31-2 record. In 2009, Hammonds was named thirdteam All-Charlotte Observer. She has earned All- Conference honors in each of the last two seasons. Tyler, a 6-foot-2 forward from Emporia, Virginia s Greensville County High School, averaged 17.2 points and 16.3 rebounds per game as a junior. Tyler earned district player of the year honors last season as a junior. She has earned first-team all-district and all-region honors in each of the last two seasons. She was named first-team all-state as a sophomore and a junior. Whitaker, a 6-foot guard from Boiling Springs, South Carolina s Boiling Springs High School, averaged 12 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game as a junior. Whitaker is a threetime all-region selection. She was named MVP of the Lady Hilltopper Christmas Tournament and the Battle of the Border Invitational. She also earned Spartanburg Herald-Journal All-Area honors.
