Summertime for a Mid NAVY SWIMMING & DIVING The summer months is when Midshipmen at the Naval Academy have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the Navy or Marine Corps. During this time Midshipmen are scattered all over the world visiting a number of ships and bases to learn about the different communities available to them in the Fleet. Following are some of the pictures from experiences of the members of the swimming and diving teams during the Summer of 2011. 2

Men s Swimming Head Coach Bill Roberts Ninth Season (Springfield College 92) 2004, 05 & 09, 11 P.L. & 09, 10, 11 ECAC Coach of the Year (M. Swimming) Bill Roberts is in his ninth season as the head coach of the Navy men s swimming team. Additionally, this is his 12th year of being a member of the program s coaching staff. Navy s 2010-11 regular season was highlighted by the Mids becoming the first team in the two-decade existence of DeNunzio Pool to defeat Princeton. The Mids posted a 167-133 win over the Tigers that day to snap Princeton s home-pool winning streak of 94 meets. Navy would then go on to win the program s eighth Patriot League title in as many years of competing at the event. The Mids established a new team points tally for the third consecutive year (1,031.5 pts.) to win the meet by 452.5 points. The year was capped off by Navy winning its third ECAC title in the last three seasons. Roberts was tabbed as the Patriot League and ECAC Coach of the Year in 2011. Navy has totaled 88 individual and relay event titles under Roberts over the last eight years at the Patriot League Championship, more than three times as many as the number of titles won by the next best program in the league. With the success of the overall program, Navy also has consistently qualified individual athletes for national meets under Roberts. The program returned to the NCAA Championship Meet for the first time in nearly a decade during his inaugural season of 2004, with four swimmers competing in a combined six individual events at the national meet which included Noah White s A cut time in the 50 free and earning a pair of Honorable Mention All- America certificates in two relay events. Navy again sent multiple swimmers to the 2009 NCAA Championship, with both Adam Meyer and Erik Hunter competing in a trio of events. Meyer would join the illustrious list of Navy swimmers to have garnered All-America accolades when he received Honorable Mention All-America honors that year. He then duplicated his efforts in 2010 to become the first swimmer in 40 years to garner multiple All-America accolades in a career. Meyer s brother, Mark, joined Justin Vagts in competing at the 2011 NCAA Championship. The Mids have also enjoyed great success during the regular season under Roberts. After posting an 8-9 record during his initial season, Navy has totaled double digit wins in each of the last six seasons, including a 17-2 record during the 2008-09 campaign. Navy has tallied an 89-21 record over the last seven seasons and is 97-30 overall under Roberts. Additionally during the Roberts era, Navy swimmers have annually taken part in such national meets as the World Championship Trials, the World Military Games, the ConocoPhillips National Championship and the USA Swimming Spring Championship. A trio of current or former Navy swimmers qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, as well, with current senior Mark Meyer already having qualified for the 2012 trials. Success has also been achieved by the men s swimming and diving team in the classroom under Roberts. A total of 94 Mids have earned Patriot League Academic Honor Roll accolades over the last eight years, and the team has a whole has been recognized multiple times as an Academic All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America. The goal of our program is to provide an environment that will allow every team member to reach their potential academically, athletically and personally. We want to be the premier service academy for those interested in swimming and diving in college. Additionally, it is our expectation that we will annually compete for a conference championship while sending athletes to the NCAA and Olympic Trial meets. Bill Roberts Roberts first arrived at Navy during the summer of 1997 when he joined Lee Lawrence s coaching staff as an assistant coach. In three seasons together the Lawrence-Roberts duo guided Navy to a 27-10 record, including an 18-9 mark in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League. Roberts coached Navy s 200 freestyle relay team that won the 1999 EISL title, and helped develop sprinter Clint Cornell to a 2000 Olympic Trials appearance and to the 2001 EISL 50-yard freestyle title. A 1992 graduate of Springfield College, where he was a four-year letterwinner and served as team captain for two seasons, Roberts began his coaching career upon graduation as the head coach of the women s team at Wells College in his hometown of Aurora, N.Y. After two seasons at Wells, he served as a graduate assistant coach at East Carolina, during which time he earned a master s degree in athletic administration. In the summer of 1996, he joined the Villanova program for one year before coming to the Naval Academy. Roberts left Navy in 2000 to become the head coach at Colgate, during which time his men s and women s teams combined to post a three-year record of 39-36. Roberts and his wife, Nicole, have three sons Will, age 12; Nick, age 10; and Jackson, age eight. Personal History Hometown Aurora, N.Y. Education B.S., Springfield 92 M. Women s Swimming Head Coach John Morrison Eighth Season (North Carolina 93) 2007, 08 & 10 Patriot League Coach of the Year (W. Swimming) John Morrison is entering his eighth year as the head coach of the Navy women s swimming program, as well as his 12th year of being associated with the team. Morrison and the Mids have posted undefeated regular seasons in two of the last three seasons, including a 10-0 mark during the 2010-11 campaign. Navy would follow last year s regular season performance by placing second at the Patriot League Championship. Last season s success came on the heels of a record-breaking 2009-10 season for the Mids. After posting a 10-1 record during the regular season, with Navy s lone loss coming to No. 11 Virginia, the Mids totaled 14 event victories on their way to winning the Patriot League title for the first time in three years. Additionally, 2010 graduates Tara Chapmon and Thuy-Mi Dinh made their second and third, respectively, appearances at the NCAA Championship in 2010. The recipient of the Patriot League Coach-of-the-Year award three times in the last five years, Morrison has guided the Mids to a pair of league crowns, four second-place showings and a third-place finish at the meet in his time with the program. A Navy swimmer has earned at least a share of five league swimmer-of-the-year accolades during Morrison s seven years, while the Mids have won a league-best 55 swimming event titles under Morrison s guidance. The program also has made strides at national events during Morrison s tenure. A contingent of Navy swimmers are regular participants in U.S. Swimming meets such as the USA Short Course National Championship, ConocoPhillips National Championship and the World Championship Trials. The 2008 season saw Dinh become the first women s swimmer in Patriot League history to attain an A cut qualifying time for the NCAA Championship, then she and Chapmon advanced to the national meet in both 2009 and 10. Additionally, Laura Gorinski posted a pair of 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifying times during the 2010-11 season. Navy also posted the program s first undefeated season during the 2008-09 campaign, part of a winning streak that would span to 25 meets before the aforementioned loss to the Cavaliers. The Mids have compiled a 47-2 record over the last four years and a 74-14 record in all under Morrison s leadership. In addition to the team s success in the water, the program under Morrison has been regularly recognized as an Academic All-America Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America and has accounted for 56 placings on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll over the last seven seasons. Morrison s hiring in 2004 returned him to The Yard where he served as an assistant coach to Dick Purdy for four seasons beginning in the fall of 1993. The Purdy-Morrison duo coached the Mids to a 33-14 record and to league titles during each of its four years together. After leaving Navy following the 1996-97 school year, Morrison served as a volunteer assistant men s coach at Tennessee during the 1997-98 season in which the Volunteers placed fourth at the NCAA Championship, followed by one year as an assistant at Rutgers. After serving as the head coach and aquatics director at the Ocean County YMCA in his hometown of Toms River, N.J., for two years starting in 1999, he was named as the head swimming coach at Lehigh in 2001. Morrison coached the Mountain Hawks to a combined 31-27 record during his three seasons in Bethlehem, a period highlighted by the men s team winning the We want our swimmers and divers to attain success both in the pool and in the classroom. Continuing to have success during our regular season, at the Patriot League Championship and striving to be competitive at the NCAA Championship will always be key foundations of our program, as is having both individuals and the team garner academic recognition. But we as coaches are here to do more than that. Developing a person away from the pool and fostering a sense of family within the team are also very important to us. The U.S. Naval Academy is known for producing great leaders, and we want the women s swimming and diving program to reflect that, as well. Additionally, being a member of our program should be a fun and enjoyable experience. We want the relationships and memories developed as a member of our team to last a lifetime. John Morrison 2002 Patriot League title. A successful athlete in his own right, Morrison earned four letters in swimming and in golf while a student-athlete at Toms River High School and was selected as a member of the school s inaugural Hall of Fame class in the spring of 2004. He would go on to earn four letters in swimming at North Carolina, helping the Tar Heels win a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference titles in the process. Morrison would enter the coaching ranks in 1991 as an assistant swimming coach at Washington & Lee where he helped coach four NCAA Division III All-Americans. He also assisted with the school s 1992 water polo team that won the Division III Eastern Championship and served as the interim golf coach. Morrison and his wife, Amy, have a 12-year-old son, John, and an eight-year-old daughter, Avery Grace. Personal History Hometown Toms River, N.J. Education B.S. Men s Swimming Asst. Coach Lt. j.g. Chris Maiello Fourth Season (Hartwick 02) Chris Maiello enters his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Navy men s swimming program. The Mids have posted a 42-4 record and won three Patriot League titles during his time at Navy. In addition to his USNA coaching duties, Maiello also served as the head coach of the U.S. team at the 2010 and 11 World Military Games and is the head coach of the Navy swimming club team that annually competes at U.S. Swimming meets. He arrived on The Yard during the summer of 2008 following a two-year stint as the head coach at Darton College (Albany, Ga.). His swimmers combined to set 36 school records and, while competing primarily against four-year schools, the junior college team produced a 10-9 record during the regular season. Maiello inherited a Darton program that saw its men s team place 12th and its women s team 15th at the 2006 NJCAA National Championship in the year prior to his arrival. His initial season at the school saw the women place seventh and the men place ninth at the 2007 national event, with both programs recording thirdplace showings at the 2008 championship meet. Among the swimmers he coached at Darton were two that won junior college national titles. Prior to accepting the position at Darton, Maiello was part of the coaching staff at Rochester for a little more than one year, first as an assistant coach and then as the program s interim head coach for six months. Maiello himself earned NCAA Division III All-America accolades in the 100 and 200 freestyle events (2002 and 01, respectively) as a swimmer at Hartwick. After graduating from the school in 2002 with Hartwick records in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events, he began his coaching career later that summer by serving as the head coach at Amsterdam High School (Amsterdam, N.Y.). He held that position until the summer of 2005 when he joined the Rochester staff. Maiello and his wife, Kimberly, are expecting their first child in December.
