CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Grand Strand/Myrtle Beach Chapter - American Singles Golf Association March 2010 President s Letter Who would think we'd cancel a Golf Outing due to snow? South Carolina, a Winter Wonderland! Be patient, it won't be long before we have perfect golf weather. We have two 18 hole outings scheduled for March. Sign up ASAP, as we have 6 reserved tee times for 24 players. Unused tee times are released one week prior to the date of golf. Our next Golf Outing will be at the Heritage Club on Saturday, March 13th. Don't miss the pizza party at my home afterwards, even if you're unable to play. Since it's just before St Patrick's Day, you'll have to indulge my Irish roots and join in a sing-a-long. My piano skills are limited, but after a little "Irish Cheer" you won't notice. I've contacted a leprechaun to provide golf cart "goodies". In Irish we say, "Caed Mile Failte", a hundred thousand welcomes! Anytime we have an included breakfast, lunch or both, please tip the wait staff. Often this is overlooked since a bill is not presented. We always collect $1 for the Bag Guys. Cold weather did not deter the 8 hearty players who participated in the last Nine Hole event. Natalie Cruse, of the Classic Swing Golf School, joined our players giving tips to improve their play. Based on availability in her teaching schedule, Natalie has offered to play with our monthly Niners when possible. We had a great turnout at our last meeting with a Valentine treat for everyone, thanks to our Social Chairs, Eileen Dozier and Brian Huff. Drew Dennison, a member of the Legends Golf Staff, chose Diane Wolfe to be his assistant in demonstrating sand trap and bunker shots. Not only was he good, but he had a great sense of humor. We're looking forward to next month's "Tips from the Pro. Our next Nine an Dine is on St. Patrick's Day. The PARTY begins at the Legend's with the "Wearing of the Green" as the theme of the day. Prizes will be awarded to the greenest of the green! "You gotta be in it to win it." The restaurant will feature corned beef and cabbage along with the regular menu and GREEN BEER! You have an outstanding Board working to create Chapter events that are fun and successful. They inspire me with their tireless enthusiasm. We, as a Board, are aware that we cannot please everyone all the time, but we do listen to your suggestions and implement good ideas. Let's continue to keep positive attitudes. Many of our members, myself included, would enjoy additional golf and social events. We need volunteers here. If you have a home course or a favorite course why not plan to host just one golf outing this year? Our Communications Committee handles all the e-mail and notices, etc. The same goes for social events such as a Pelican's Baseball Game. a wine tasting, a picnic. Giving of yourself brings joy to many. On that subject, our thanks go to the Divine Ms. Karen Mitchell for a fabulous Super Bowl Party. Also, we are looking for a volunteer who uses Facebook to help set up a Chapter web page. National's Memorial Day Weekend will be at Pinehurst this year. Being that we are so close, we should have a great turnout. Last year s event was outstanding. Sign up! Upcoming Events Include: Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst - Thursday, May 27 Sunday, May 30, 2010 - Details at www.singlesgolf.com/ Pinehurst We're Going to Scotland - August, 2010 - Details at SinglesGolf.com/scotland National Website: www.singlesgolf.com E-Mail: ASGANational@aol.com Office Hours: 9:00am to 2:00pm, M-F (Eastern) National Office: 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE CHAPTER WEBSITE: www.myrtlebeach.singlesgolf.com Regular Meeting Date: THIRD WEDNESDAY of each month Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 at 7:00pm Meeting Location: Legends Restaurant/Pub Our Hotline: 910.579.5503 (See next page for list of officers and board members.) Together we can work to increase membership by spreading the word of the "happenings" in the Myrtle Beach Chapter of ASGA. Whether you have Irish Eyes or not, keep them smiling. ~Mary Ann Sanborn, President Golf News Golf --- Then. Well February will certainly be a month we will talk about for a while. Our first outing to Heathland on the 13 th was cancelled because of SNOW! We then attempted to play our 9 and Dine on the 17 th. Eight of the 12 people signed up did brave the cold and were rewarded with a Play with a Pro lesson on course management. The Legends Assistant Pro, Natalie Cruse, followed our members around the course and gave each member some helpful suggestions. We then looked forward to Parkland on the 21 st. We had a record sign up once again with a wait list. Unfortunately there was an hour and half frost delay in the morning causing our tee times to be pushed out about an hour. Although most members were able to finish, eight people quit after 9 holes, picked up their rain check and went to the club house. March just has to be better!!!! A special thanks to Barbara Carr and Mary Ann Sanborn for coordinating the 9 and Dine and setting up our Play with a Pro lesson. Golf --- Now. Saturday, March 13 th will be our first outing to Heritage. The show up time is 11:30am. The format will be play own ball and the contest is Lowest Putts. The prices are $32.00 seniors and $39.00 under 60. Both prices include lunch at the club house. Lunch is served starting at 11:00am. After golf we are all invited to Mary Ann Sanborn s house for pizza and fun. An additional $5.00 will be collected there to cover the food and drink costs. Our next 9 and Dine is on Wednesday, March 17 th (St. Patrick s Day). We will play Parkland. The show up time is 2:30 and the cost is only $20.00. Range ball will be available for only $3.00. Hopefully we will have another Play with a Pro lesson by Natalie Cruse. On Sunday, March 21 st we will play Moorland for the first time this year. Our show up time is 11:30am. The format will be play own ball and the contest is Points. The prices are $32.00 and $39.00. Both prices include food tickets which may be used before or after golf. Range balls for only $3.00. We can feel it in the air. I'm sure we are all looking forward to the warmer weather. We have three golf outings scheduled with social gatherings after each event in March. On Saturday, March 13, we play at Heritage in Pawleys Island. Show time is 11:30 AM. After golf, our social will be a "Pizza Party" at the home of our president, Mary Ann Sanborn. The cost for the party is $5.00 for pizza, beer, wine, and soft drinks. Please plan to attend the social even if you will not be playing golf. Call Mary Ann if you need directions to her home. Our "9 and Dine" general membership meeting is Wednesday, March 17, at Membership Chairperson Mary Connelly dutzbob@aol.com 843-249-0101 Do you want to update your personal information on our chapter s roster? You can now do this yourself. Simply click on the MY ACCOUNT link at the national website (SinglesGolf.com). You can update your address, phone, add your cell phone, change handicap, etc. Doing it yourself takes the burden off of your chapter leaders so they can spend more time on the golf course and less time on the computer!

The Legends Restaurant/Pub at approximately 6:30 PM. It is also St. Patrick's Day. We will play 9 holes of golf. Show up time is 2:30. After golf we will have our social and regular meeting. The theme for this meeting is "The Wearin of the Green". Prizes will be awarded to the greenest man and woman. Legends will also be serving green beer and corned beef and cabbage in addition to its regular menu. On Sunday, March 21, we play Moorland at The Legends. Show time is 11:30 AM. Lunch is included in the cost of the golf. We will have our social gathering after golf at The Legends Restaurant/Pub. We are always open to ideas for social events. If you would like to have a party at your home, or would like to help out, please contact Eileen or Brian. ~Social Co-Chairs: Eileen Dozier & Brian Huff Rules and More Rules Q. Larry's match play opponent conceded a putt and said, "Larry, that's a gimme, it's good." Larry, not being one to simply say thank you, went ahead and putted out. Of course he missed. Does Larry's missed putt count? A. Yes, Larry's missed putt is counted. When Larry proceeded with his putt, the gimme was nullified and Larry's putt counted. B. No, Larry's missed putt is not counted. Once the putt was conceded, the hole had ended for Larry. AND THE ANSWER IS: The answer is B. Larry's missed putt is not counted. Once the putt was conceded, the hole had ended for Larry. Rule 2-4 applies. The rule says that a match play player may concede his opponent's next stroke at any time, as long as his opponent's ball is not moving. At that point, the opponent is considered to have holed out. CELEBRATING 17YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION MARCH, 2010 Event Dates: Thursday, May 27 Sunday, May 30, 2010 With great excitement and anticipation, we re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in announcing our Reunion in Pinehurst again. The Reunion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA s largest-attended event each year with attendance soaring over 400 in years past. It s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 27-30. Prices have been lowered $23 on the standard package price and $140 on the room by myself package price, as compared to 2008 pricing. As such, we anticipate a quick sell-out. Pinehurst was the site of our Memorial Day weekend reunion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Packages start at $489 per person, based on double occupancy and $639 per person based on single occupancy. If you priced this event on its own, you d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that s included. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday on No. 3) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at Tobacco Road Golf Club Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.singlesgolf.com/pinehurst The standard package is a great deal. If you priced this on your own, you d easily pay twice as much as what you get as an ASGA member. You can t fine a value like this at any great golf resort in the country. Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. To join ASGA, simply go to www.singlesgolf.com/join Included in the Standard Package: 4 days / 3 nights, based on double occupancy 2 rounds of golf, cart, range balls, prizes for winners and welcoming gift for all 6 food functions: cocktail party (heavy hors d oeurves and 2 free drink tickets if you register by April 18), picnic-style cookout Friday after golf, Saturday sit-down dinner and 3 lavish buffet breakfasts in the main dining room Dancing with our DJ on 1st and 3rd nights (does he dance?) All resort service fees and taxes. The resort service fee pays for bicycle rental, practice green, afternoon tea, on-site transportation, fitness center, tennis courts, outdoor pools, etc. In addition, Pinehurst is offering ASGA members a coupon good towards a 20% discount on spa services or one round of golf club rentals. See SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst for details on this coupon. Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are available. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members. U. S. Open Returns to Pinehurst in 2014 For the first time in Open history, one venue is the site of both the men s U. S. Open Championship and the women s U. S. Open Championship in the same year. Both championships will be hosted by Pinehurst in 2014. Pinehurst was also the site of the 1951 Ryder Cup as well as the 1999 and 2005 U. S. Opens. We re proud to see the American Singles Golf Association host their event at Pinehurst again this year, said Sara Green, sales manager at Pinehurst. The showing ASGA had in years past is a testament to the match we have with our resort and your members. Pinehurst has a tradition that goes way back into the last century. All of the greats have played there. The No. 2 course will not be part of our standard package, but hopefully, you ll have an opportunity to play it at a reduced rate due to the anticipated aerification schedule. See website for details. Please review the Pinehurst.com website and check out their hotel accommodations. They re offering the Carolina Inn, the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and their condos again. In addition to these hotels, if your chapter (or group of friends) would like to get eight (8) of your members together and get a villa, which has a common living room and kitchen facility, review the Pinehurst.com website and indicate such on your registration form. - - Tom Alsop, President/Founder, ASGA Phone 704-889-4600 or 1-888-GOLFMATE GolfASGA@aol.com
