Joey O -wey Reliever Joe O Donnell has looked sharp in his last two outings, retiring 15 of his last 16 batters faced during that stretch. On Tuesday night at Radford, O Donnell pitched three perfect innings in relief with four strikeouts. Wolfpack Enters Home Stretch on Hot Streak The Pack has won nine of its last 12 contests. Brett Austin is hitting.423 over the last seven games with five runs, 10 RBIs, three doubles, three homers, and two stolen bases while slugging.885 with a.516 OBP. Austin had a career high four RBIs in the Pack s win over Radford. Reached Base Streaks Trea Turner leads the team with a current 22- game reached base streak, the longest such streak of the year for NC State. Avent Wins No. 900 NC State s 9-2 rout of Coastal Carolina on May 3 was head coach Elliott Avent s 900th career victory. With the series sweep of the Chanticleers, Avent s record at NC State improved to 676-417. He is the winningest coach in program history. He was 225-213 in eight seasons at New Mexico State from 1989-96. Woeck Shelved for Season NC State suffered a major loss to its relief corps when senior righthander Andrew Woeck underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in mid-april and was lost for the season. Used in a variety of roles, Woeck finished with a 3-1 record, a save and a 2.17 ERA. In 11 appearances, nine of them out of the bullpen. He notched 41 strikeouts in 29 innings and held opposing hitters to a.227 batting average. In his nine relief appearances, Woeck worked 22 ⅓ innings, allowed 18 hits, struck out 33 with eight walks, and had a 2.01 ERA. Losing Woeck really hurt us, Wolfpack coach Elliott Avent said. This guy was lights out early in the year last year, and was lights out early in the year for us again this year. That s an injury that s been tough for us. Wiz Knizner Freshman third baseman Andrew Knizner was a longshot to lead the Wolfpack in hitting, but he s doing just that as the regular season winds to a close. Knizner leads NC State in batting average (.340), hits (65), and RBIs (45). Knizner seems to have the knack as a quick study. In the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings combined, Knizner is batting.406 (26-for-64), with 12 runs, 21 RBIs, three doubles, and all four homers that he s hit this year. Three of Knizner s four home runs for the season have come in the sixth inning, the most in a specific inning for any Wolfpack batter. Knizner has also shown the ability to keep rallies going. He leads the team by 42 points on his.371 average with runners on base. Brett Austin is second on the team with a.329 average when runners are on base. Crunch Time Trea Turner, Brett Austin, and Preston Palmeiro are the players NC State wants at the plate in a pinch. Palmeiro is hitting.346 (9-for-26) with 11 RBIs and two doubles with runners on and two away. Turner is hitting.387 (13-for-31) with 13 RBIs, three doubles, a triple, and nine walks in that situation. Austin is slugging.588 with runners on and two outs, and sits second on the team with a.353 average in that situation. With RISP and two outs, Turner and Palmeiro are hitting.400 (8-for-20) and.391 (11-for-23) respectively. EDITORIAL THE UNOFFICIAL SCORER Return of Burner, Running Game, Rodon May 6, The Return Of Burner Turner Junior shortstop Trea Turner earned national and Atlantic Coast Conference player of the week honors on May 5 for his one-man-band demolition of Coastal Carolina the weekend of May 2-4. For the three-game series which NC State swept by scores of 11-1, 9-2 and 8-4 Turner was 9-for- 11 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs. He stole six bases in as many attempts, including a straight steal of home. He scored 11 runs in the three games, and scored on each of his first seven plate appearances of the series. His on-base percentage for the series was.867. His slugging percentage was 1.364. For you statheads out there, that s an OPS of 2.231. You look at the box score and you see 3-for- 4 today and 4-for-4 yesterday, and those are impressive, head coach Elliott Avent said following the series. But it s what he does to the other team when he gets on base that has such an impact on the game. With his speed, he messes up everything they do. Indeed, it seemed that every time Turner got on base, he paralyzed the entire Chanticleer infield. He stole second base four times, stole third once without drawing a throw, and practically waltzed home on a lazy pickoff throw to first base for a straight steal of the plate. He also scored once on a wild pitch. When he did reach base, he didn t stay there long. He was left on base just twice, once on second and once on third, and he advanced at least one base every time he reached except two, his home run and his triple, when he was caught in a rundown between third and home on a ground ball to the drawn-in infield. In the series opener, Turner came to bat five times and reached base all five, once on an error and twice on walks, and scored all five times. In the middle game of the series, he singled and scored his first two plate appearances. His streak of seven consecutive runs stopped on his third at-bat, a two-out single in the third. He singled again in the sixth and was stranded at second, then walked in the eighth, stole second, took third on an infield single, and stole home. In the series finale, Turner homered, tripled and singled in his first three at-bats. Needing only a double for the cycle, he struck out in the seventh and drew an intentional walk during the Wolfpack s five-run eighth. Coastal got Turner out just twice in the three games, both in the finale, once on a checked-swing for strike three and the other following his triple when he was caught in the rundown. The one category that I focus on, if I had to look at stats, would be runs, Turner said. That s what wins games, and at one point this weekend I had scored in seven straight at-bats, which I thought was pretty cool. It s nice to go 9-for-11 and steal some bases, but scoring the runs is what I take pride in. In 15 plate appearances in the series, Turner had back-to-back trips to the plate without scoring just once, in the fourth and sixth innings of the middle game. He scored in all five plate appearances in the opener, and three times in five plate appearances in both the second and third games. NC State scored multiple runs in an inning five times during the series, and Turner scored in each of the five innings. When Trea is reaching base regularly and running, he disrupts the other team and dominates the game, Avent said. It changes what the other teams want to do and puts pressure on them. The Running Game As A Weapon Trea Turner wasn t the only Wolfpack player running, stealing bases and scoring runs in the Coastal Carolina series. For the series, the Pack stole 12 bases in 13 attempts in the series, including what is believed to be a school-record nine steals in the 9-2 rout in the middle game. Logan Ratledge was successful in three stolen-base attempts in the series, and Jake Armstrong stole two bases in three attempts. Running at full speed through, the Pack scored 28 runs in the three games. The 12 steals was the most in a three-game span by NC State this season, and the most in three games by the Wolfpack since stealing 13 from Feb. 18-24, 2012, vs. Wright State (3), UNC Wilmington (4) and George Mason (6). It s worth noting that Turner stole seven of the 13 bases in that threegame span. The big weekend on the basepaths vs. Coastal Carolina lifted NC State s stolen-base total for the season to 55, which still pales compared to the last Continued on following page...

Soccer Matches at the Doak NC State and Georgia Tech played to a pair of 1-0 finals while splitting the first two games of the series on April 25 and 26, marking the first time on record that NC State baseball has competed in back-to-back 1-0 games. The Pack rallied to take game three and the series by a 7-1 final. Gun Show NC State has 10 outfield assists this year, including five from center fielder Jake Fincher. The Pack had three outfield assists at East Carolina, one each from Fincher, Garrett Suggs and Brett Austin. Rodon Watch With nine strikeouts in his May 9 start against Wake Forest, Carlos Rodon raised his season total to 111 and his career total to 430. He will enter play next weekend tied with Maryland s Jake Stinnett for the ACC strikeouts lead. Rodon has 93.2 innings pitched this season, giving him 340.2 for his career, good for third place in school history, 7.2 IP shy of second. The start against WF was the 48th of Rodon s career, tied for second all-time at NC State. Terry Harvey holds the NC State career records for innings pitched (426) and starts (60). Turner Crosses the Century Mark Trea Turner s stolen base against Radford gave him 23 for the season, and 110 for his career. Turner passed Tom Sergio as the NC State career stolenbase leader a year ago. Sergio stole 73 bases from 1994-97. Turner becomes just the seventh player in ACC history with 100 or more stolen bases in a career. The ACC s career leader in steals is Ty Griffin of Georgia Tech, who stole 127 from 1986-88. See Rodon Hit In seven games as the Wolfpack s starting designated hitter, Rodon is 11-for-27 (.407) with a double, four walks, six runs scored and four RBIs. In addition, he s 2-for-11 with two RBIs in eight appearances as a pinch-hitter. For the season, he s hitting.310 (13-for-42). two years, when the Wolfpack set school records with 102 steals in 2012 and then broke that with 110 a year ago. The absence of the running game has been glaring at times. NC State stole 10 bases the first three games of the season, and 21 through the first eight games. And then stopped running altogether. From Feb. 28 vs. Michigan through April 5 vs. Clemson, a span of 21 games, the Wolfpack stole just nine bases in 15 attempts. If there s anything we haven t done as well this year as last year, it s run the bases well, head coach Elliott Avent said. Last year we disrupted teams and got them out of sync and frustrated them, and that s what Trea does. He wasn t stealing that much in the first half of the year, but he s probably stolen more bases the last two weeks than he did the first two months. Turner stole seven bases in nine attempts the first eight games of the year, then did not even attempt a steal from Feb. 28 through March 28 vs. Miami, a mindbending span of 16 games. The longest he d gone without attempting a steal prior to that was five games, which happened once a year ago. Before stealing four bases vs. Coastal on May 3, Turner had attempted more than one steal in a single game just four times the entire year. To Avent s point, Turner stole just seven bases the first 24 games of the season. In eight games from April 22 through the Coastal series, he stole eight. In 21 games from March 29 through the Coastal series, he stole 14. Part of the issue for Turner was falling victim to his own reputation. Opposing pitchers and catchers have paid much more attention to him this season, holding him much closer to the base with attempted pickoff throws. As a result, he s been caught stealing three times and picked off three times. Pitchers using slide-steps to home plate lose velocity on their fastball but gain overall time on their delivery to home plate, and that makes it harder to steal. I go by the time for the pitcher to home plate, Turner said. If he s 1.1 or 1.2 seconds to the plate, it s probably going to be a bang-bang play [at second]. If he s at 1.4, then I m probably safe every time. Twotenths of a second isn t much but it means a lot. The Truth About Rodon s Supposedly Lost Season If you read the words that allegedly pass for wisdom on the internet, you might come away thinking that Carlos Rodon s season has been a total lost cause. His 4-7 won-lost record is not what anyone envisioned for the two-time first-team All-American when the season began, but forget the won-lost record. Rodon s pitched as much like an All- American this season as he ever has. The internet pundits, many of whom have only seen Rodon a handful of times, if that, definitely lower the flag to half-mast and remove their hats when referring to the Wolfpack lefthander. He s 4-7, they say. That s awful. His velocity is down from last year. His slider isn t the same. His fastball command is off. He s just having a bad year, they claim. Some assert that his freefall in meaningless MLB draft projections from the likely first overall pick all the way to maybe third overall will be proof that his season has been an utter failure. Where do they get this stuff? There s a reason those guys aren t really scouts. If anything Carlos Rodon is better than he was a year ago, at least better than at the same point in the season. He may not be as good now as he was at the end of last year, but no one is as good as Rodon was in May, June and July of 2013. At each point of the season to date, however, he s been as good as, if not better than, he was at the same point in 2013. Carlos started out better this year than he did last year, head coach Elliott Avent said. He s throwing pretty much the same right now as he was this time last year. In the end, he always throws well. When it warms up, that s when he throws his best. If you don t think Rodon is his usual dominant self, just ask Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets came to Doak Field at Dail Park on April 25, and for the longest time it appeared that Tech might not put a ball in play. Rodon struck out the first three men he faced, then walked Thomas Smith leading off the second inning. Smith was caught stealing, and Rodon then struck out seven more batters in a row, giving him 10 K s in the first 11 batters faced. He finished with a complete-game six-hitter, struck out 15 and walked two. And lost 1-0, a recurring theme in. For an honest evaluation of Rodon s season, though, ignore the losses. Throw out the 4-7 record, because that s really irrelevant and largely beyond his control. NC State was shut out in five of Rodon s starts he lost all five, of course and in his seven losses, the Wolfpack batted.147 and scored a grand total of two runs. During those seven losses, his ERA was 1.84 with 66 strikeouts and 17 walks in 49 innings. I don t get frustrated at my record because I can only do so much to control that, Rodon said after the loss to the Yellow Jackets. I get frustrated when we lose because I hate losing, whether I m pitching or not. If you want an accurate measure of Rodon s season, look at the entire body of work, not the W s and L s. Through 12 starts, his ERA is 1.87. In 86 ⅔ innings, he s struck out 102 and walked 28, allowed 72 hits and held opposing hitters to a.226 average. Through the same number of starts in 2013, his ERA was 4.14. He d pitched 74 innings, struck out 114, walked 31 and allowed 56 hits. His strikeout rate was better a year ago, but his walk rate is better in. The hitsallowed rate is virtually the same. Avent is right that Rodon pitches his best as the weather warms up. In five postseason starts a year ago, one in the ACC Tournament and four in NCAA postseason play, he was 2-1 with a 1.09 ERA and 47 strikeouts, seven walks and 23 hits allowed in 41 ⅓ innings. The same pattern is emerging this season as well. In his last four starts, he is just 2-2 but with a 0.86 ERA, 42 strikeouts, 10 walks and 23 hits allowed in 31 ⅓ innings. As for reports that his velocity is down from 2013, again, that s only when comparing his first 12 starts in to his last five starts a year ago. He began 2013 with a mysterious drop in his fastball velocity, rarely hitting 90 mph and sitting for the most part at 87-88. It took him about six starts to start sitting in the low 90s, and it wasn t until late April and May that he started overpowering hitters with both his fastball and slider. Early in, Rodon s fastball sat in the 92-93 range, with occasional brushes with 94 and 95. He s had some fluctuations, but all in all his velocity has been better than at any corresponding point in 2013. Recently, however, he s seen that warm-weather jump in his velocity, resulting in the aforementioned fourstart hot streak. At Duke on April 11, he sat at 94-95, hit several 97s and 98s, and dazzled hitters with his slider and changeup. Against the Yellow Jackets he did the same, and also threw some unhittable curveballs into the mix. If anything, Carlos s fastball command hasn t been the same [as last year], but his velocity has been better this year and he s going deeper into games, Avent said. He s getting easier outs. His changeup is more effective this year. And his slider right now is the old slider. He s dominating with that pitch right now. Bruce Winkworth served as NC State baseball s media relations contact for 17 years, and currently acts as the Wolfpack s official scorer. This column is dedicated to his unique voice and knowledge of the game.
