Page 7 The Morning Line Monday, July 11, 2011 POLO 2011 Polo Season THEMORNINGLINE Monday, July 11, 2011 www.themorningline.com Where s Polo Today? Editor & Publisher: Frederic Roy phone: 561 315 3111 polo@themorningline.com 2011 Trophy Inc. all rights reserved Frank Stallone Passes Away at Age 92 It is with much regret that I must announce the passing of Frank Stallone. Frank passed away this morning on 7/11, a number he would certainly chuckle on when announced by Tony Coppola on the polo field. Frank was 92. His life was filled with a lot of adventures and people he loved. I had the good fortune to go see him 10 days ago at his house. We had a good hour together reminiscing so many great memories. Over 70 Years of Polo Frank Stallone played his first game of polo in 1941, 70 years ago. Born in Gioia del Colle, Italy in 1919 (near the port of Bari), he rode horses and ponies as a child before coming to the United States in 1932. Frank studied at the Americanization School in Washington, D.C. And met Eleanor Roosevelt who patted him on the head and asked him what he would like to do when he grew up. She personally encouraged him to become a writer. In 1940, Frank joined the U.S. Army and became a member of the Cavalry at Fort Bliss, Texas where he started playing polo with the officers. After Pearl Harbor, the Fort Bliss Cavalry division was alerted for overseas duty; horses and horse equipment were turned in. The day of the horse-mounted cavalry had ended. After his discharge from the Frank will forever be linked to his famous son Sylvester who became an overnight sensation in 1976 with the film Rocky, and so he was known in the polo world for being Sly s father. However in 1976 when fame embraced the Stallone family, Frank had already been playing polo for 35 years. Frank was really proud of his sons, Frank Jr., Sylvester and Dante, often invoking the Stallone gene. He would discuss Sly with great admiration; he reminded me Army, Frank went back to Washington, D.C. And continued to play polo at the base of the Washington monument. At times, General George Patton would play along with other retired officers. Frank helped found the National Polo Club on a farm outside Washington, which eventually became the Potomac Polo Club in Potomac, Maryland. Dick Moran and Tommy Doud provided the fields, Then Joe Muldoon picked up the banner and helped create one of the finest polo clubs on the East coast. Frank started snow-birding to Florida and played at Gulfstream Polo Club until retirement. He played with Don Bradley, John Keeler, the Rizzos, Bill Ylvisaker, John Oxley and the Gracidas. He also played in California at Santa Barbara, Griffith Park, and Will Rogers State Park. Frank says that the high point of his life was in 1990 when he that Sly became the third person to be nominated and receive Oscars for both acting and writing in the same year, following in the footsteps of Charles Chaplin for The Great Dictator (1940) and Orson Welles for Citizen Kane (1941). He was proud to have sent Sly to Sly and Frank Stallone in 1990 played polo with his son Sly and the Gracida brothers at a celebrity match at Palm Beach Polo and Country Club. He says that Sly could have been a high goal player. Two of his sons, Sly and Frank Jr., are natural athletes and both played polo. Polo was a family activity. As an author, Frank has published Stewart Lane (available on Amazon.com), and has and is about to publish two books, Heartbreak and Sonny. He still finds time for his love of polo and he is in attendance at many of the great games played at International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington. This article, written by Rebecca Fisher, was published in the ML April 10, 2011 Switzerland at the prestigious Le Rosey to get a good education. With polo and horses, writing was Frank s true love. Frank was a storyteller, Michael Bucci said this morning, remembering Frank from years playing many charity polo games; he always had good stories to tell. In 2010 Frank published his book STEWART LANE and his friend Joel Ratner was telling me this morning that he has three completed manuscripts in his computer ready to be published. His memory will get bigger, Joel said. When we visited Frank with Joel 10 days ago, Frank was coming out of an afternoon nap and he looked tired. He had been fighting cancer for some time, at least 2 years, his doctor telling everyone he was a miracle of strength and resilience. After a few minutes of light conversation and a few good laughs, Frank sat up in his bed and suddenly looked so strong and confident that he would beat this thing. We had a great time together. Joel said to me this morning that Frank was ready when he last saw him, and he told him so. A memorial will be held in Wellington on the date of his birthday, September 12, he would have been 93. In our visit, Frank showed me his picture on the horse he rode 2 years ago when he turned 90. He was proud of his life and he was in peace with himself. Frederic Roy

An evenly matched Crab Orchard faced off against Riverview on the John Henry field at the Kentucky Horse Park on a beautiful Kentucky morning. Riverview was held scoreless in the 4th chukker and Crab Orchard was held scoreless in the 5th chukker. Riverview looked to pick up a bit of momentum in the 6th chukker, but could not overcome its deficit. Riverview missed 3 penalty shots in the first half and 2 more in the second, one of which was in the last minute denying them the opportunity to tie and go into overtime. The group convened at the Mt. Brilliant field to play the first official game of the season on the pristine field. Villa del Lago and Faraway face off at 12:45 under a wilting heat.
