It s September, we have only three points events left, and the competition for the end of the year trophies is going strong. 2 Redline Fun in the Sun! The Hutchins Grocery-sponsored 2009 Back-to- School Special autocross weekend is in the books! Saturday, August 15 was a non-points event. The Sunday, August 16 event results counted towards the year-end championship. The weather both days were sunny and warm! On Sunday we had TEN (10) timed competition runs! Plus fun runs! The course design was a challenge for this event, as an airport improvement project prevented the use of the area south of the gate. As most people know, the north area is somewhat tight, being completely fenced in, and it has areas of bad pavement that cannot be included in any course layout. My goal in designing the course was to create an intermediate to advanced level challenging course, in the style of a Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Tour autocross event. I also wanted to maximize the use of space without making the course difficult to follow, and without making it too tight. I didn t want to hear anyone whining about it being a Miata course. Lastly, I wanted the course to be a traditional autocross featuring a single run through the course with separate start and finish lines. On both Saturday and Sunday, the courses included a late apex corner with a wide-open entry, but tightly defined exit using a wall of cones. The driver had to decide how wide to swing and where to turn-in, to be rewarded with a good exit line. The exit lead directly into another turn, so a bad line through the first corner, just compounded the issue going into the second. Boohoohaha! (Dr. Evil laugh) Another challenging feature I included was a 180-degree sweeping turn that I made to look like two, tight 90-degree turns connected by a short straight. I caught several RSCC regulars driving it as two turns! Boohoohaha! Boohoohaha! I had yet another trick up my sleeve! Hey, Hutchins Grocery, owned by none other than Shantaram the magician, sponsored the event, so it was appropriate Continued on page 3 2009 RSCC Club Officers President: Tina Johnson...... 845-2207 Vice President: Mike Hendriks.... 498-1701 Treasurer: Pete Day........ 442-7741 Secretary: Jenna Tronti..... 541-698-6016 2009 RSCC Board of Directors Doug Batt............ 326-0200 Jesse DeJager........... 616-2913 David Price........... 845-1538 Doug Pulver........... 845-8731 Oliver Taylor........... 834-8212 Terry Jones (alternate)....... 822-5308 Area Code 707 unless otherwise noted Redwood Sports Car Club Post Office Box 478 Eureka, CA 95502 www.rscc.net Sept 19 20 Die Hard Special, points/points Oct 17 18 Nov 21 2009 Events REDLINE is a publication of Redwood Sports Car Club, 2009 RSCC Liz Petersen, Editor/Graphic Production David Price, Reproduction Octoberfest I and II, non-points/points Annual Awards Banquet Day of Event Schedule 7:30 a.m. Gates Open 7:45 8:30 a.m. Registration 7:45 8:45 a.m. Tech Inspection* 7:45 8:55 a.m. Course Open for Walking 9:00 a.m. Driver s Meeting Mandatory 4:30 p.m. (approx.) Redline 3 Fun in the Sun! Ccontinued from page 2 that I threw in a few tricks. Nobody noticed (or at least mentioned it to me), but I deliberately did not space the slalom cones evenly. The cones were spaced 42, 46, 50, and 54 feet apart (in that order). Boohoohaha! Boohoohaha! Boohoohaha! On Saturday, fun was had by all! The pressure was off as it was a nonpoints event, but everyone was still trying hard to lay down quick times. On Sunday, Mathew Pulver piloted his kart to a best time of 42.66 seconds. Chelsea Pulver drove her Toyota Corolla to a best of 41.90 seconds. We had three Mustangs participate, driven by Dan Linton, Chad Villiados, and Shawn Johnson. All are new to autocross and made a great effort in cars primarily set up for drag racing. We hope to see these guys again. Trent Huffman s best time in his kart was 36.17 seconds. Marvin Goss showed everyone his expert driving skills by piloting his Nissan Sentra, classed in H-Stock, the slowest class of all the autocross classes, to a best time of 36.06 seconds. That time put him just above the mid-point in the results. Nice work, Marvin! Loren and Marsa Fisher both competed in their recently completed Mercedes-Benz-powered MG-B, with Loren finishing with a best time of 35.08 seconds, between Mike Hendriks with a 35.17 and Oliver Taylor with a 34.83. Watch out for the B! Oliver Taylor had engine trouble with his A-Stock Corvette and had to go back to his 2008 PAX championship winning E-Stock Mazda Miata this weekend. This puts Oliver behind Dan Rhoads in the A-Stock points race. Oliver being back in the Miata brought back the E-stock rivalry between he and Don Roberts in the MR2. Don ended up ahead at the end with a 34.39 second run. Tina Johnson, Dan Rhoads, and myself battled it out for Top Door Slammer Time of Day, with the best time going back and forth several times until the ninth run, in which I clicked off a 33.87-second time. Finally, Top Time of Day went to Bill James in an 80cc shifter kart. He turned a 29.96! I d like to thank Hutchins Grocery for sponsoring the weekend and everyone who participated and/or worked to make the event a success. There is lots of work that goes on behind the scenes for every event, as well. Nobody gets paid for doing it, so please remember to be nice to everyone you meet at our events, especially those who volunteer and don t even compete!
