Since 2005, sailboat captains and their enthusiastic crews have competed for the honor of taking home the USS Constellation Cup THE RACE Starts near Fort McHenry; the course goes around Fort Carroll and the exciting finish is off USS Constellation in the Inner Harbor. FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE The George Colligan Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the most successful vessel, captain and crew! ABOUT HISTORIC SHIPS IN BALTIMORE Historic Ships in Baltimore is the steward of one of America s premier maritime collections. The fleet includes the 1854 US Sloop-of-War Constellation, the USCGC Taney built in 1936, the US Submarine Torsk launched in 1944 and the Lightship Chesapeake which entered service in 1930 as well as the Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse which marked the entrance to the Patapsco River and Baltimore Harbor starting in 1856. Each of these very special artifacts is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has its own unique story to tell. While maintenance and preservation of the vessels is always a priority, education is a primary focus. Historic Ships also participates in community activities such as Pre-K at Play, a citywide initiative designed to introduce young children and their families to the many learning activities that the area has to offer. Historic Ships provides discounted or free admission to many groups, including Baltimore City school children and those with special needs, and supports deserving non-profits by donating hundreds of free tickets to for use in fundraising activities. Historic Ships offers youth internships and volunteer opportunities. Individuals and volunteer groups assist with both interpretation and maintenance, directly impacting the collection and day-to-day operations. Historic Ships in Baltimore is an important community asset that requires support from many sources to accomplish its mission.
