EAA CHAPTER 10 SINCE 1955 Board Member s Report Thanks you Ashley Shelton for your presentation at our February meeting. It was very informative and enjoyable, but don t ask me to participate! As we are getting our extra hour of daylight I'm getting more excited to fly after work. I personally can't wait to get some flying time in. I feel we had a very strong February meeting and breakfast. Thank you for participating. You all rock and make me feel very proud to be a member of EAA Chapter 10. We took our Aviation Explorer s Group to the Tulsa International Air Traffic Control Tower on the 25th of February to give them a prospective of what goes on at a big airport. Thank you Rob Summers for making that happen and giving our group a tour that they will never forget. I personally am excited about this upcoming meeting as we will hear from Mark about Washington DC. Then it will be time to get together on Saturday for fellowship and pancakes. And on Sunday afternoon April 2nd we will have a hanger spring cleaning and light maintenance day please join if you can. Also on a personal note I lost a big tree in the wind storm on Monday March 6th. I hope everyone was as lucky as I was and only had minor damage. I want to welcome all the new faces we are seeing around the meetings and breakfast in February thank you for joining our group. 3 March 2017 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Survival of a Small Town Aircraft Museum? 5 Home Builders Corner 6 Members Classified Page 7 Officer Contacts / Membership Info As always stay safe and blue skies Joel Howard Vice-President Who brings the Snacks is on Page 6! P a g e 3 Survival of a Small Town Aircraft Museum? By Mike Aichele Secretary of EAA 10 If you were to tell me that the 5 th largest aircraft museum is located in small town USA, I might have to call you a l.r, but it s true. The 5 th largest aircraft museum Mid-America Air Museum is in Liberal, Kansas almost a stone s throw away from us. My son lives in Liberal, so I have been going to the museum for several years. In that time, I ve seen it go from a well-maintained museum to a barn find appearance. But things are looking up with a new director Laureano Mier who has a passion for aviation and education. Located on the west edge of Liberal, the museum boasts a collection of military aircraft, civilian aircraft and aerospace and aviation exhibits - over 100 in all that executive director Laureano Mier describes as phenomenal. Let s get started with the story of how all this came to be. Where did it all begin? A group of local citizens founded the Mid-America Air Museum in 1987. The concept was the result of a reunion of bomber group personnel who had been stationed at Liberal during World War II. A large portion of the museum's success can be directly attributed to Col. Tom A. Thomas, Jr. USAF (ret.). Col. Thomas, a WWII pilot trained in Liberal, was an avid aircraft collector living in Oklahoma who loaned over 60 airplanes to the museum for display. In the fall of 1997, he permanently donated 52 planes of his collection valued at over $3 million. Another focal point of the museum is its Dwane Wallace (Cessna President from 1936 to-1964) collection. Wallace's widow, Velma, placed these airplanes on loan to the Mid-America Air Museum, bestowing it with the honor of displaying and maintaining this significant collection. Its Rise to one of the top aviation museum! When Gregory Kennedy was the director of the museum, the museum was well maintained and thrived. Prior to the Liberal museum, he spent 14 years in service with the Smithsonian, as well as time with the Smith Museum (American Airlines) in Dallas and the Space Center of Alamogordo, New Mexico. The museum was in good hands. And then Gregory left! The Fall! The museum is owned by the City of Liberal and we all know how well governments run. I don t think the city thought the museum was that important, so there wasn t enough funding to properly maintain the museum. A new director was hired, who had no interest in aviation, so the museum started to decline. I noticed the changes over years that I visited the museum. The planes were dusty and dull. The planes had flat tires on most of them and some of the them were damaged and never repaired. Part of the museum was moved to a warehouse rather than being displayed. The relationship with local EAA Chapters disintegrated during this period. The overall appearance
P a g e 4 didn t really welcome you or make you want to come back for another visit. The rise! In 2017 plenty of exciting new changes started taking place at the Mid America Air Museum. a new Director was hired - Laureano Mier who has a passion for aviation and education. Laureano was the previous Director of the Pearson Air Museum, The Pearson Field Education Center, and Director of Education for the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum (home of the Spruce Goose) in the Pacific Northwest. I had a chance to meet Laudreano in February and I can tell you I have never met a more passionate person about aviation. If the city really understands the overall impact a well-run museum can have on the city (tourism), then I think the museum will rise from the ashes. In his short time there, the tires have been aired, the dust is beginning to be replaced with wax. Aircraft in distress are be moved inside and restoration is beginning. The Future! Laureano has created a new series of tours for local schools that include a Discovery Cart that was developed by the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. This cart explains the Four Forces of Flight, the Three Axis of Flight, Bernoulli s principle, and Aircraft Structures and Components. He recently deployed this program in the new movie theater with over two hundred students visiting the museum in one day. The museum s incredible volunteers were able to see first-hand the positive reception this program received by the students and teachers, and the flurry of questions that the students peppered them with. He is also trying to develop a renewed relationship with some EAA chapters in the area. If the city cooperates with Laureano, I see a bright future for this museum. It will hopefully be one I can enjoy for a long time. The Visit! Liberal is approximately 280 air miles from Owasso, so maybe you can find time in your schedule to visit this little gem.
