Solon s year began last week with a shutout win at Aurora and Twinsburg took down Copley by a score of 49-28. Friday night will be the second non-conference game on both team s 2018 schedules and the first of five games for the Comets at their own Stewart Field. 2018 SCHEDULE & RESULTS (1-0, 0-0 in Greater Cleveland Conference) Date Opponent Site Stadium Series/Result Aug. 24 Aurora Aurora, Ohio Veteran s Stadium W 25-0 Aug. 31 Twinsburg Solon, Ohio Stewart Field Solon 46-8-3 Sept. 7 Stow-Munroe Falls Solon, Ohio Stewart Field Solon 10-3 Sept. 14 Elyria* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field Solon 5-0 Sept. 21 Strongsville* Strongsville, Ohio Pat Catan Stadium Solon 18-11 Sept. 28 Brunswick* Brunswick, Ohio Brunswick Automart Solon 8-4 Oct. 5 Euclid* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field Tied 2-2 Oct. 12 Mentor* Mentor, Ohio Osborne Stadium Mentor 13-11 Oct. 19 Shaker Heights* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field Solon 12-1 Oct. 27 Medina* Medina, Ohio Ken Dukes Stadium Solon 11-2 *-Greater Cleveland Conference Game #-OHSAA Playoff Game 2017 SCHEDULE & RESULTS (5-5, 3-4 in Greater Cleveland Conference) Date Opponent Site Stadium Series/Result Aug. 25 Aurora Solon, Ohio Stewart Field W 15-14 Sept. 1 Twinsburg Twinsburg, Ohio Tiger Stadium W 26-21 Sept. 8 Stow-Munroe Falls Stow, Ohio Bulldog Field L 17-14 Sept. 15 Elyria* Elyria, Ohio Ely Stadium W 33-6 Sept. 22 Strongsville* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field W 28-14 Sept. 28 Brunswick* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field W 28-14 Oct. 6 Euclid* Euclid, Ohio DiBiasio Stadium L 33-28 Oct. 13 Mentor* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field L 38-34 Oct. 21 Shaker Heights* Shaker Hts., Ohio Rupp Field L 14-7 Oct. 27 Medina* Solon, Ohio Stewart Field L 38-28 *-Greater Cleveland Conference Game #-OHSAA Playoff Game

PAGE 3 GREENMEN GO DOWN The Solon Comets took full advantage of their first opportunity on the 2018 schedule with a 25-0 win over Aurora at Veterans Stadium last Friday night. Solon s scoring began after the midpoint of the first quarter with Harrison Rich connecting on a 24-yard field goal. Not long after, sophomore tailback Khalil Eichelberger went two yards into the end zone. The two-point conversion play was successful with Pat McQuaide completing a three yard pass to Najee Story. Both the second and third quarters saw Khalil Eichelberger with touchdown runs and Harrison Rich with successful extra point attempts. The Comets offensive effort featured Quarterback Jimmy Casamento completing six passes for 36 yards and Quarterback Pat McQuaide connecting through the H. Rich K. Eichelberger J. Barnett air five times for 67 yards. Defensively for Solon, Jeff Barnett led the way with 10 tackles, of which five were tackles for loss. Solon gave up only five yards to the Aurora offense after the first 24 minutes of play and kept Aurora under 100 total yards for the entire game. The Aurora Greenmen look to bounce back when they host CVCA on Friday night while the Comets will host Twinsburg for their 2018 home opener. BIG BASH Be sure to mark your calendars for the 2018 Solon Band Bash on September 8th at Stewart Field. The event will feature bands from nine area schools. The eight teams that comprise the GCC went a combined 6-2 to start the season. Strongsville hosted Berea-Midpark and came from behind to get the victory. Solon took down Aurora, Shaker Heights went to East Cleveland Shaw and won, 20-6; Mentor hosted St. Edward and won by three in a shootout, Medina beat Cleveland Heights by 13, and Euclid put Glenville away, 42-17. Brunswick and Elyria both suffered losses in games played at their home venues. Brunswick fell to Highland and will stay home this week to play Cleveland Heights and Elyria was taken down by Avon Lake. They ll go to Bedford this week in search of their first win. Week Two sees the GCC going up against teams from the Suburban League and the Lake Erie League, as well as two independent teams. BIG BEGINNINGS The Solon Comets have enjoyed Week One victories in 14 of the last 16 seasons. Since 2003, the Comets have outscored their first game opponents 450-215. In addition to last week s shutout of Aurora, the Comets opened the year twice with shutouts. Those games were in 2009 and 2010 against Shaker Heights. In both seasons, Solon went on to finish with a 10-0 regular season record. Only twice over the sixteen season span has Solon lost the second game after winning the first. REMEMBER THAT? Last year s game against Twinsburg featured two huge catches by a Solon Wide Receiver. Senior Trevon Raphael caught a 63-yard pass for a touchdown in T. Raphael the first quarter and again scored on the long ball in the third quarter, that time for 73 yards. He finished the game with 5 catches for 177 total yards.

PAGE 4 LETS DO IT AGAIN The page now turns to the second game of the season and after a big night at Aurora, the Comets will come home to face Twinsburg. Games that feature two schools within close proximity of one another are a big deal. Last week only 7.4 miles separated the Comets and their opponent, and this week its only 4.9 miles. Throughout the history of Solon Football, the Comets have not played a team more than they have played Twinsburg. This being the 58th meeting between the two teams, that s a big deal and it is something that must be taken very seriously. Twinsburg began the season last week in roaring fashion with 566 yards of offense in a 49-28 win over Copley. After a 21-21 halftime score, the Tigers opened the flood gates in the second half to seal the win. Two Tiger receivers had over 100 yards in receptions. Twinsburg s performance last week is a big deal and it shows the talent and skill that this 2018 edition of the Tigers employs. As for the Comets, Head Coach Jim McQuaide has always said that defense will carry this team as far as it wants to go. Clearly his defensive unit started the season with playoff aspirations in mind by posting a shutout at Aurora and Khalil Eichelberger s three rushing touchdowns certainly helped the Comets as well. With Friday night s performance in the rear view mirror and after taking a look at what Twinsburg was able to do over four quarters last week, the Comets will be hard at work this week to be sure they have everything in order going into their 2018 home opener. We faced a really good team at Aurora last week, said Coach McQuaide. We were able to do some good things in our first game but there is still plenty of work to do as we prepare to see Twinsburg. Over the years we have been in some big games with Twinsburg. THE OPPOSITION They are consistently a tough opponent for us. We look forward to our preparation this week and to getting back on the field Friday night. The second opportunity on the 2018 schedule comes in just a few short days. This time it s in front of the home crowd on the home turf. Look forward to a big deal in Week Two.
