Together, the two sports are responsible for six of the school s 16 NCAA team titles. Baseball won in 1976, 80 and 86, while women s golf captured the title in 1996 and 2000 and men s golf in 1992. We re going to call it The Hall of Champions, quipped Director of Golf Rick LaRose. In 1992, the Arizona men s golf team showed they truly were champions by putting together a complete team effort in defeating Arizona State by seven strokes. The Wildcats shot an NCAA-record 23-under-par 1129 for 72 holes in capturing the program s first national title. The championship is what every coach, every player, everyone strives for, LaRose said. It s a pinnacle, a real team effort. Senior Harry Rudolph, the 1991 California amateur champion, led the Wildcats with a second-place finish at 10-under-par 278, while junior Manny Zerman was a stroke back in third place. David Berganio, the 91 U.S. Publinks Champion, took 13 th at 286, while junior Rob McIver shot a 293 and senior closed his collegiate career with a 294. The Wildcats showed their mettle in the brutal stretch of the closing holes, which included the 16 th, a 460-yard par 4; 17 th, a demanding 243- yard par 3; and the 602-yard par-5 finishing hole. Berganio was particularly impressive in the 1992 NCAA Championships 1. ARIZONA.. 286-284-274-285=1129 (-23) 2. Harry Rudolph.... 71-69-66-72=278 (-10) 3. Manny Zerman.... 72-70-67-70=279 (-9) 13. He holed a 60- foot, three-level birdie putt on the 16 th, rammed a 20-footer to save par at the 17 th and curled in a fivefooter to seemingly wrap things up on the final hole. Those last three putts were all from the heart, Berganio said. I knew I had to help the team. I knew I had to make birdies down the stretch. LaRose and his squad hit some clutch shots down the stretch, but they made no secret of their love for the New Mexico course. I would like to play here every day, LaRose said. It is a course where great shots are rewarded. The Wildcats had enough great shots to go around in putting together a complete team effort. This was the closest team I have ever been on, said Zerman. We wanted to win. Pictured at right is the 1992 national championship squad. Front row (left to right): Manny Zerman, Harry Rudolph. Back row: David Berganio, Rob McIver,, head coach Rick LaRose. 23
