MORE GOLF NEWS Insert in the March 1, 2015 Edition of the Iowa City Lodge No. 590 Bulletin GOLF COURSE UPDATE I would like to thank all Elk members who donated money and/or labor in making our fundraiser a huge success. A new irrigation controller, the remodel of the ninth hole and the removal and replacement of ash trees were the result of the fundraiser. A special thanks goes to our Golf Committee who were the driving force behind this and who continue to improve all aspects of our golf program. Five more counties in southern Iowa have been identified as having infestations of the emerald ash borer, bringing the total to eighteen counties. This is no doubt the most destructive tree pest to invade North America. If you hear heavy woodpecker flecking on your ash trees, investigate further! Winter is when I compile and compare records from season to season. In 2014 I reported 10.5 million gallons of water to the DNR for irrigation from the Iowa River. The greens were irrigated 60 times, the tees 38 times and the fairways 36. The total was down due to a cool summer, 36 of rain and the fact our pump station was flooded for 20 days. The greens were mowed 208 times, the tees 80 times and the fairways 62 times. We use different styles of mowing most noticeable on the fairways. The Zamboni or Old English style dates back to the late 1800s, when mowers were pulled by horses. Basically half is mowed one direction and half is mowed the opposite. This kept the team on a gradual turn from one side of the fairway to the other. It works great with lightweight fairway mowers reducing the number of turns, saving labor and fuel. The stripping method is basically mowing a different direction each time. This gives that crosshatched look, really pretty, requires a lot more turning. The burning method is mowing the same direction each time and gives that well-defined line, but leads to grain in the turf if used too often. In January we had our pot luck employee party, the food was amazing. Thank you to several members who helped make it possible. Thanks to all my co-workers who do such a fine job and are enjoyable to work with. One more thank you to our Lodge officers and volunteers who implement the programs of Elkdom for the benefit of so many deserving people. Last but not least a pair of bald eagles started a nest in the timber between four green and the river. As of February 15th it looked like they were sitting on their eggs. Hopefully we can observe the rearing of their eaglets this season. Hope we open by April 1st. Ned Giles Golf Course Superintendent GOLF COMMITTEE This year s tournament and event schedule is provided and will be posted in the pro shop. Believe it or not, our first event is scheduled for Saturday, April 11th. Thursday evening men s league starts on April 16th and plays a 19-week schedule. Get yourself a partner and sign up. If you don t have a partner, feel free to sign up and we ll try to partner you with another single player. Entry fee is $200 per person and includes weekly hole prizes, dinner after each evening s play, and first-half, second-half and overall team prizes. You must be a golf member to play in this league. A women s golf organizational meeting is planned for Tuesday, April 21st at 5:30 PM and all women golfers are urged to attend. Women s Tuesday events commence on May 5th with the year s first Super Tuesday. Men s Friday morning senior league is planned and, dependent on the numbers that sign up, will begin play on June 5th. We ll have signup sheets for all the mentioned events posted in the pro-shop around mid-march. Thanks, to Sally Cline, Bryan Dietz, Norby Jordan and Kurt Kimmerling for cleaning the pro shop and locker rooms on February 16th. And thanks to Norby for donating the needed paint and supplies. FROM THE PRO As the temperatures still hover around zero, it is comforting to believe that within 4 weeks time it is possible that the golf course could be open. Having just returned from Las Vegas playing in an Iowa PGA event with 4 of our members, the itch to tee it up at our club is strong. Be ready when Ned declares the season open!!! The first event will be The Master s Pick-a-Pro on April 11th. The Elks Junior Golf Camp will be June 15th-18th (Mon-Thur) from 8:30-10:00 AM. It will be open to any child age 6-12. Cost will be $75 per child. Golf fundamentals, rules & etiquette will be taught in a fast-paced and entertaining way. When you sign up be sure to include the child s T-shirt size. Looking forward to seeing you all on the golf course. Terry Anderson, PGA Golf Professional Elks Country Club, Iowa PGA Section
