Royals vs. Twins The Royals bring a 6-3 advantage in the season work into tonight s series opener...the last time these clubs met, KC swept a 3-game visit to Target Field...the Royals trail the all-time series by a 347-376 mark, but possesses a 184-177 advantage in Kansas City, 165-160 in The K. Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/13 @ Min W, 12-3 Duffy May 40,123 4/15 @ Min L, 1-3 Gibson Volquez 21,362 4/16 @ Min L, 5-8 Milone Vargas 17,449 4/20 KC W, 7-1 Volquez Gibson 20,393 4/21 KC W, 6-5 Young Fien 20,990 4/22 KC L, 0-3 Pelfrey Guthrie 24,721 6/8 @ Min W, 3-1 Vargas Hughes 22,796 6/9 @ Min W, 2-0 Young May 22,497 6/10 @ Min W, 7-2 Volquez Gibson 22,434 7/2 KC 7/3 KC 7/4 KC 7/5 KC 9/7 KC 9/8 KC 9/9 KC 10/2 @ Min 10/3 @ Min 10/4 @ Min GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS--How about the good news first, the Royals return to Kauffman Stadium tonight to open an 11-game stay that will lead up to the All-Star break...also on the good news side is that when Kansas City left town 10 days ago, its lead in the A.L. Central was 3 1/2 games, but after a 5-4 journey through the A.L. West, the Royals open this stay with a 4 1/2-game advantage over these Twins and six games on Detroit...now for the bad news, the Royals had gone 5-1 through Seattle and Oakland, but then ran into a red hot Houston and wound up being swept by the Central leaders, capped with a 6-5 setback last night...kc jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of a Kendrys Morales 2-run homer and an RBI single from Alex Rios...the hosts used a 4-run fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead on starter Edinson Volquez, but the Royals proved resilient when Jarrod Dyson tripled home the tying run with a 2-out gapper in the seventh... unfortunately, Houston took advantage of Jose Altuve getting plunked to open the home half of the seventh and scored the deciding tally...kelvin Herrera was saddled with the loss without giving up a hit. TWINS, RAYS AND JAYS TAKES KC TO BREAK--Tonight kicks off a season-long 11-game stay at The K starting with a 4-game set against division rival Minnesota, followed by a 7-game stretch vs. the A.L. East with Tampa Bay (4) and Toronto (3) hitting town...the completion of the Houston series last night snapped a stretch in which KC was away from home for 16 of 21 games, going 10-6 in the road games. BEEN A LONG TIME...--The Royals wrapped up June with a 15-11 ledger, giving Kansas City three consecutive winning months to open the year for the first time since the 1989 campaign...this year s club started with a 15-7 month of April, followed by a 14-12 run through May...the 89 club went 16-8 in April, 14-13 in May and 14-12 in June, but entered July in third place in the A.L. West, two games off the pace... this year s club opens July with a 4 1/2-game advantage over Minnesota, picking up five games in the standings during the month of June after entering a half-game back...in the 47-year history of the Royals, this is the fourth time the club has opened the year with three consecutive winning months, not only matching the 89 campaign, but also 1980 and 82. BIG CROWDS EXPECTED--Ticket sales have been brisk for this matchup between the first and second place clubs in the Central, with well over 30,000 expected for each of the first three games...the Royals have announced that single-game sales have already cracked the 2,000,000 mark for the first time since 1991 and the 12th time in team history...the Royals eclipsed the 1,000,000 mark in turnstile attendance in their 31st home date of the year, the fastest the franchise has ever drawn seven figures...kansas City is averaging 32,934 per game, which is an improvement of 11,320 compared to 35 dates last year...with 46 home dates remaining, the current per game average factors out to just over 2.66 million over a full season, which would shatter the team record of 2,477,700 set in 1989...the Royals have already played in front of 11 sellout crowds at The K this year. KC S PEN STILL THE BEST--Despite allowing a run last night, Kansas City has taken over the Major League relief ERA lead with a 2.06 mark, with St. Louis next at 2.15...during the 9-game road trip, the KC pen allowed five earned runs in 28.0 innings for a 1.61 ERA, while holding the opposition to a.118 average (11-for-93). FIVE STILL HOLD ALL-STAR LEAD--With voting winding down tonight, the defending American League Champions have five potential starters in the 2015 All- Star Game lineup slated for July 14 in Cincinnati...in the latest vote announced on Monday, Salvador Perez, Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon and Omar Infante each lead at their respective positions, while Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer are currently second at third base and first base, respectively. TONIGHT S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Kyle Gibson (5-6, 3.30) vs. RHP Chris Young (7-3, 2.71) 2015 2014 Career 2015 2014 Career Kyle Gibson vs. Royals 1-2 2-0 4-2 Major League Record 5-6 (3.30 ERA) 13-12 20-22 Chris Young vs. Twins 2-0 0-2 2-2 Major League Record 7-3 (2.71 ERA) 12-9 72-55 CHRIS YOUNG is making his 11th start and 17th overall appearance of 2015...tonight marks his second start and fourth appearance this season against the Twins, the 206th outing and 199th assignment since debuting with the Texas Rangers on August 24, 2004...the 6-foot-10 righty signed a one-year free agent contract with Kansas City on March 7 after pitching for Seattle in 2014, winning the American League Comeback Player-of-the-Year award. BOUNCING BACK IN OAKLAND--Chris rebounded from his shortest start of the year, tossing 6.0 solid innings to earn a 3-2 win at O.co Coliseum last Saturday afternoon... he allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and four K s, firing 96 pitches...two Royals errors led to both runs, as his throwing error in the first inning allowed Sam Fuld to score after a leadoff double...then, with two outs in the fifth, the A s took a brief lead when Eric Sogard came home on Alcides Escobar s errant throw... KC rallied for two runs in the top of the sixth and C.Y. put together a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame to earn his seventh win...he recorded his fifth quality start and sixth start where he s allowed five hits or less. HITS SCARCE WITH C.Y.--With four hits allowed in his last outing, Young dropped his season opponents batting average to.192, third-best among Major League hurlers that have tossed at least 60.0 innings and tops in the A.L...he s holding righties to a.164 average (19-for-116), second among MLB pitchers with 100-plus opponent at-bats against righties...among active pitchers that have worked at least 1,000 career innings, his 937 hits allowed are the second-fewest to Miami s Mat Latos (903), while his career.224 opponents batting average is second-lowest in that group, behind only Clayton Kershaw (.209). UNDER THE LIGHTS--Chris has been superb at night, going 6-1 with a 1.31 ERA and opponents hitting.167 against him...his night ERA and opponents average are the lowest in the Majors among pitchers that have recorded at least 45.0 innings, with his ERA over a half-run better than Dodgers righty Zack Greinke (1.83), who is second. TAKING CARE OF THE LEADER--Opponents have found limited success when leading off an inning against C.Y. this year, batting just.132 (9-for-68), though three of the nine hits have left the park...the average is tops in the American League and third in the Majors, behind Max Scherzer (.120) and Jacob degrom (.131). VS. TWINS--Young has earned victories in his last two outings vs. Minnesota, allowing one hit over 6.1 innings in a June 9 start at Target Field, a 2-0 Royals win... he also earned his first victory as a reliever over the Twins here on April 21, tossing a pair of scoreless frames in a 6-5 KC triumph...young is 2-2 with a 2.86 ERA (14 ER in 44.0 IP) and a.209 opponents average in nine career outings and seven starts against Minnesota. AT THE K --Chris is looking to bounce back from a pair of rough outings his last two times on the home mound...after winning his first four decisions here, he s allowed 13 earned runs over his last 9.2 innings in losses to Cleveland and Boston...overall, he s 4-2 with a 4.11 ERA (14 ER in 30.2 IP) at Kauffman, while he s 37-28 and a 3.32 Young vs. Twins Player AVG. AN UNUSUAL ENDING--When Jarrod Dyson tripled home a pair of runs last night to tie the game, it also jumped the Royals over the 4-run threshold, which has generally spelled victory for Kansas City...unfortunately, last night wasn t the case, as the Astros plated a sixth run to drop the Royals to 36-5 when plating at least four runs this year...dating back to the start of the 2013 campaign, Kansas City is 169-22 (.885) when scoring four times...conversely, Kansas City is 8-26 when scoring less than four runs in a game this year and 28-84 over the last two years. vs. Twins (2015) vs. Twins (career) At Home (career) Gibson (career) Milone (career) Player AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI AVG AB H HR RBI Butera - - - - - Cain.300 30 9 1 6 Colon.250 12 3 0 2 Dyson.111 9 1 0 0 Escobar.293 41 12 0 2 Gordon.308 26 8 2 5 Hosmer.250 28 7 0 5 Infante.143 21 3 0 1 Morales.229 35 8 2 5 Moustakas.359 39 14 1 5 Perez.333 36 12 1 4 Rios.067 15 1 0 1.333 9 3 1 1.287 164 47 2 21.167 24 4 0 3.238 122 29 1 9.296 328 97 2 38.297 498 148 19 62.294 265 78 6 36.241 370 89 6 28.245 159 39 10 28.273 267 73 9 34.325 234 76 8 33.290 438 127 17 58.170 352 60 2 20.284 729 207 13 93.268 71 19 0 4.265 491 130 4 41.264 1540 406 11 130.272 1999 543 65 275.275 1174 323 31 149.269 2376 639 29 233.280 1405 393 61 226.246 990 244 25 115.288 819 236 23 121.287 2965 852 96 409.667 3 2 0 0.154 13 2 0 0.000 1 0 0 0.143 7 1 0 0.471 17 8 0 1.357 14 5 1 4.250 16 4 0 1.200 10 2 0 0.091 11 1 0 1.333 15 5 0 0.125 16 2 0 1.222 9 2 0 0.000 3 0 0 1.250 16 4 1 2.333 6 2 0 1.143 7 1 0 0.227 22 5 0 3.364 11 4 1 2.267 15 4 1 2.250 8 2 0 0.111 18 2 1 3.200 15 3 1 2.353 17 6 0 2.071 14 1 0 1 Starting Pitchers Breakdown Total KC Avg.
