Hello Future Fly Gurlz and Fly Guyz, 2018-2019 is the year for greatness and NEW! We are looking for the total package. We need enthusiastic, hardworking athletes with charisma, courage, crowd appeal, and cooperative attitudes. Appearance-neatness, fitness, hair and make-up will be incorporated into the total package for overall cheerleader image. Pep, enthusiasm, confidence, and showmanship are extremely important as well to the overall package of each applicant. All tryout applicants must submit proof of Sickle Cell Testing in order to participating in this UMES Cheerleading Season! A tryout fee of $25, cash or money order, should be made out to "UMES Athletics". Cheerleading Tryout Fee should be written on the memo line. This is a non-refundable payment if you do not make the squad. This year there will be a $300fee to be on the team. This can be paid all at once or twopayments of $150. This will cover your shoes, sports bras, camp wear, bow, competitions, etc. We understand that financial difficulties are common; we will try to work with any applicant who brings this issue to our attention in advance. You will also need a current copy of your insurance cards front and back or the actual card. A liability waiver form should be completed by a parent if the applicant is under the age of 18. THIS YEAR WE WILL PROVIDE THE MUSIC AND CHOREOGRAPHY FOR THE DANCE AND CHEER PORTION OF THE TRYOUT. All UMES Cheerleaders must learn cheers and dances for various reasons. Those not willing or able to pick up cheers and dances will experience difficulty being selected to the team or will be used minimally. Techniques we are looking for this year s 2018-2019 squad:: Jumps-Pointed toes, proper form, exceptional height. Tumbling- Standing Back Handspring, Standing Tuck, Two or More Rapid Back HandspringsEnding in a Tuck Landing, Three Toe Touches to a Backhandspring or Tuck, Running Pass with Multiple Handsprings, Tuck, Layout, Layout Step Out or MORE!!!
Stunting- Main - Must be able to hold a major portion of a partner stunt. Side - Must be able to support the main using proper technique and strength. Back - Must act as a brace for the flyer while offering support to the main and side. Flyer- Must be able to balance in the air while demonstrating proper technique (being tight and pulling her weight up) while showcasing above average,three (3) different single leg positions. Additionally, one must be able to double down from stunts. The flyer will also be required to do two (2) different basket tosses with one being at least two skills done before the cradle. *** It is suggested you showcase all positions in stunting!*** Dancing- Applicants should be prepared to pick up a fast paced choreographed dance quickly. Tight motions, confidence, appropriate facials, and mastering the moves will earn the highest points. The Hawks are looking for a real show stopper! Motions - One cheer and 1-3 chants will be taught. Tight motions, confidence, consistent eye contact, smiles, and mastering the motions will earn the highest points. Words need to be CHEERED versus spoken. Show that HAWK PRIDE! Appearance- Looking for colligate image, neatness, poise, and physical athletic build. Applicants should present themselves at tryouts how they would present themselves at a game. Hair should be half-up, and pulled out of the applicants face. Applicants should also present themselves with poise and a collegiate demeanor. Enthusiasm- Looking for smile, voice projection, rapport with the crowd, eye contact and confidence. Applicants must be comfortable performing skills and all other materials learned. UMES tryouts are not about showing the skill, it is about performing the skill with 120% effort and energy, as of in a game situation. Personality- Colligate attitude, maturity, and a strong work ethic. Applicants must be persons who want to play an integral part of a large program. Applicants must be willing to both give and take, and recognize foremost that, working daily to wear the uniform is only a small part of the
deal achieving success for the privilege of being part of the team is where it s at every day. Applicants who are only interested in wearing the uniform need not apply! We are looking for very solid, talented, and dedicated cheerleaders; team players with character that can exemplify the core values of the UMES cheer program as well as the University. There will be Interest meeting held on September 4 th, 2018 for incoming Freshmen/ Transfers DAY 1 Sept. 7 th, 2017-6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (approximately) Required Tryout Attire: Black or Gray Cheer Shorts and Black or White Fitted Tee Shirt/Sports Bra/Tank Top. No cut offshirts or shorts, jean shorts, sweat pants, tights, or ill fitted clothing can be worn during tryouts! NO EXCEPTIONS!! Clean White Cheerleading Sneakers/Clean White Ankle Socks or Footies - NO KNEE SOCKS!!! Light Make-up DAY 2 Sept. 8 th,2018-10:00a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Required Tryout Attire: Black or Gray Shorts Cheer Shorts and Black, White or Gray Sports Bra, or Tank Top. No cut off shirts or shorts, jean shorts, sweat pants, tights, or ill fitted clothing can be worn during tryouts! NO EXCEPTIONS!! Clean White Cheerleading Sneakers. Clean White Ankle Socks or Footies - NO KNEE SOCKS!!! DAY 3 Sept 9 th, 2018-10:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. (approximately) This year you will get assign tine to tryout with two cheers and three continuous pick-ups. Show your HAWK PRIDE and where Maroon and Gray, clean white sneakers and clean white socks or footies. No knee socks! Full game day makeup: eye shadow (Smokey Gray), mascara, a shade of Maroon Lipstick complimentary to your complexion. NO EYE GLITTER (collegiate image is different than the All-Star look), NO FALSE EYE LASHES! Neat, cheerleading appropriate hair style (half up/half down), ONCE ON THE TEAM, THIS IS THE HAIR STYLE FOR MOST GAME DAYS. You MUST be able to pull your hair up even if it s in protective style. (That means you can leave the sides out!) NO pierced jewelry and NO SPACERS for piercings are acceptable at tryouts or during the season. Tattoos are frowned upon. Please refrain from adding to your collection now or once on the team. EXCESSIVE TATTOOS CAN AFFECT YOUR OVERALL TRYOUT SCORE! No Bandaids can be used to cover piercings.
INJURY WAIVER FORM 2018-2019 UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE CHEER SQUAD I,, in consideration of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore giving me the opportunity to join the UMES Cheer Squad, hereby waive the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, the Trustees of UMES, the UMES Athletic Department, the UMES Cheer Program, the UMES Cheer coach, and any judges, and tryout assistants of any responsibility or liability in the event of any injury suffered the UMES Cheer tryouts. I acknowledge that by participating as above mentioned, I voluntarily assume all risks and dangers known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen, attendant to my attendance and participation at the event. I further declare that this is release contains the entire agreement between the parties and that I have read the foregoing release and fully understand it.
