Bromsgrove School Tennis Academy Bromsgrove School are pleased and proud to announce the start of our fourth term of the Bromsgrove School Tennis Academy (BSTA). Our Director of Tennis: Mr Richard Lawton and his assistant coaches, Amy Foster, James Hodges & Paul Cowie, strive to deliver the highest possible standards in the teaching of tennis to children and adults through the internationally renowned Lawn Tennis Associations long term player development plan, all at a competitive price. The Academy welcomes people of all ages and abilities and you can join us at any time of the year, even midway through a course! How do I enrol? If you haven t already done it, please complete the Membership Card Application form enclosed within this pack for each child or adult you are enrolling with the BSTA. You must also sign and return the Terms and Conditions Form. Completed Application Forms should be returned to the Sports Centre reception. If you have any questions that are not answered within our FAQs, please feel free to contact Mr Paul Felton: Commercial Manager using the contact details below. What makes us special? BSTA offers value for money prices and teaching ratios; experienced and highly qualified professional teachers; affiliation with the LTA and delivers a wide range of tennis lessons to all ages and abilities. Absolutely no membership or joining fee is required (unlike other tennis clubs), you only pay for your lessons. BSTA provides all tennis equipment but you are welcome to bring your own if required. Lessons will run throughout Bromsgrove School s term time, breaking for all half terms. During the school holidays look out for our intensive tennis camps. Just before the end of each term there will be an opportunity for existing members of BSTA to re-enrol ahead of new customers. How do I contact BSTA? Tennis Lessons with Bromsgrove School Tennis Academy (BSTA) Frequently Asked Questions. What dates and days are the lessons on / not on (cancellations are due to school commitments)? Mini Reds and Mini Orange lessons start on Saturday 12 th September and end on Saturday 12 th December. Please note there are no Mini Reds lessons during half term (24 th and 31 st Oct and 7 th Nov). Indoor Lessons. For 5 to 8 year olds (Mini Reds) Saturday 9am to 12noon (4 x lessons of 45 minutes each) These lessons will cost 5.00 per person per session with a ratio of 1 member of staff to 8 children. Maximum 16 children per session. Due to the success of the mini red academy we will be introducing a further coach and a new stepping stone (ages 5-6 and 7-8) to all sessions. This will enable us to meet the needs of each individual, providing a clear pathway for each player to move up through the mini tennis academy s programme. Outdoor Lessons. For 8 and 9 year olds (Mini Orange) Saturday 10am and 11am (2 x lessons of 60 minutes each) These lessons cost 6.00 per person per session with a ratio of 1 member of staff to 8 children. Maximum of 8 children per session. Please note that the Mini Orange outdoor lessons take place at the Prep School courts. Tournaments 50 children x 3 tournaments per year (dates to be confirmed). We will email all parents who have provided us with a valid email address to remind them about these cancellations. Mini Reds (Saturday morning lessons) Mini Tennis Red is for players aged 8 and under. It is played on small courts with short rackets and soft balls. It s just like the real game and gives players opportunities to have long rallies and play different types of shots. Please note that for the summer term the Mini Reds lessons take place in the Arena and not the Senior School Sports Hall. 3
What ball is used? A foam or felt ball is used which is 75% slower than a yellow ball. What size court is red ball played on? A court with dimensions of 11m x 5.5m or 12m x 6m. It's fine to use badminton court lines. What height is the net? The net is at a height of 80cm (in the middle). What racket is best to use? A shorter racket of 43cm 58 cm (17 23 ) is recommended depending on the size and strength of the player. What kind of competitions are there at Mini Tennis Red? Players are encouraged to play fun competitions in teams and as individuals, with short matches using tiebreak scoring. What do my children need to wear? All the Mini Reds lessons are indoors so just ordinary sports/pe kit is fine. What is Mini Orange? Mini Tennis Orange is for children aged 8 and 9. It is played outdoors on a reduced size tennis court at Bromsgrove School. It s just like the real game and gives players opportunities to have long rallies and play different types of shots. Please note that these lessons take place at the Prep School outdoor tennis courts. Who is it for? 8 and 9 year olds. How do I pay my tennis fees and is my child s place guaranteed? Payment is made at the reception of the sports facilities of Bromsgrove School (senior school campus) Do I need to pay at the time of booking? Yes, places cannot be booked without payment Can my fees be added to my Bromsgrove school bill if my child attends Bromsgrove School? Payment for Mini Reds lessons cannot be added to your child s school fees if they are a pupil of Bromsgrove School. Can I pay by credit or debit card? Yes, all major credit/debit cards are accepted and payment can be made over the telephone too. Will my child/ren have the same teacher for the duration of their block of lessons? We will endeavour to ensure continuity and consistency for the children but there may be the odd occasion when a substitute teacher is brought in to cover sickness and holidays. Can I pay for private lessons to enhance their progress? 121 or mini squad lessons can be arranged. For further information please contact Mr Lawton at rlawton@bromsgrove-school.co.uk Refunds policy. Refunds for cancellations for any reasons except holidays will be considered by the Academy s Management Group on a case by case basis. Absences for personal holidays will still have to be paid for. Refunds for illness and injury will be considered upon evidence of a Doctor s note. 4
In the event of an unforeseen closure all inconvenienced students will be credited the full value of their missed lesson which will automatically be applied when paying for their next course of lessons. Closure of the site will be left to the discretion of the Sports Facilities Manager (for weather, etc). In the event of a closure made by the school we will endeavour to contact as many parents as possible, including a message on our webpage, to avoid unnecessary journeys. If your child misses a lesson then we cannot offer alternative lesson times. What are the pathways to competitive tennis? BSTA has excellent connections with Barnt Green Tennis Club and anyone who would like to pursue tennis outside of BSTA can ask for the details from Mr Lawton. Children who show an interest and/or an aptitude for tennis will be advised of the best course of action by Mr Lawton. Can I take photographs / video of my child? Yes, so long as they are for personal use only and they must not published on any social media sites. Can I talk to my child s teacher at the end of their lesson? The lessons run back to back so it isn t possible to speak with your child s teacher in between lessons. Mini Reds lessons are all held in the Sports Hall at the Senior School campus Can I park on site? Yes, Bromsgrove School has recently undergone a huge development of sports facilities and boarding accommodation, including restyling and landscaping of the car park. Please note that there may be times when the car park is extremely busy, we ask that you be patient and courteous to other users and please remember that this is a school car park and children and pupils will be in the area. 5
