Gunsmoke January 2014 Gunsmoke The Official Newsletter of the Ohio Rifle and Pistol Association January 2014 World Championship Rifle Matches to be Held at Camp Perry in 2015 Ho Ho Ho Pistol Page 5 Akron Rifle Page 6 Target Pullers Needed Page 3 Cimarron Young Guns Page 4 SERVING OHIO WITH PRIDE SINCE 1934 By ORPA Highpower Co-Director Keith Bailey For those of us not able to go to Sochi next year, we have the opportunity to see a World Championship competition in our own backyard the following year. In 2015, the World Championship Fullbore Rifle Matches will be sponsored by the NRA and held at Camp Perry, Ohio in August of 2015. Make plans now to schedule some vacation or downtime to compete or watch part of the world championship matches. The fullbore rifle matches are similar to our standard NRA Highpower rifle matches and are fired at distances from 300 yards to 1,000 yards. They are fired with either match rifles or F-Class rifles. Ammunition is limited to either.308 Winchester or.223. The matches are governed by the International Confederation of Fullbore Rifle Associations (ICFRA). The ICFRA is made up 30 full and associate member countries, whose national rifle associations govern fullbore (highpower) rifle shooting. The course of fire uses different targets than the standard US targets and there are some special rules that apply. Standard scoring practices during fullbore matches allow for two convertible sighters to be used at each stage of fire. They are called convertible because the shooter may elect to have one or both of these transferred to the scored shot section of the scorecard so that they will count as record shots. The targets used are 5V targets in which scoring is recorded as 2, 3, 4, 5, and V which is similar to our 7, 8, 9, 10 and X. These targets are the same as those which our international teams such as the Palma team must shoot when competing in foreign countries. If you have the time, a rehearsal for the World Championships will be held following the 2014 Camp Perry Highpower National Championships. Several countries will send teams to the US for a practice run for 2015. This will allow the National Matches staff at Camp Perry to familiarize themselves with procedures, targets, scoring etc. before the actual World Championships in 2015. The tentative schedule continued on page 3

6 Gunsmoke January 2014 Akron Rifle ends First Half of Season with a Win Down two power players, the Zips team braved the chilly snow storm and slid on in to Terre Haute, Indiana on Dec. 7 to go up against the Fighting Engineers of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology. After the ice melted, the Zips (4581) emerged victorious over Rose (4385). Missing from this match was freshman hotshot Zach Strohl who was unable to travel due to the flu, and sophomore Matt Chezem. Chezem is a member of the US Olympic National Development team and was proudly representing the USA and Akron at the international Winter Air Gun Games held at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Despite their absence, the Akron squad still managed to put up some nice numbers. Senior Victoria Brown and sophomore Tim Hopkins took control of the match with Hopkins earning top gun in smallbore and Brown taking top gun in air rifle. I am very proud of both Brown and Hopkins as they really put a lot of effort into leading this team every day, said coach Newt Engle, If anyone deserves to be on the top of the winner s board, it is these two. As the traveling team was in Indiana, the remainder of the Zips squad fired a home match in Akron. Despite being under the weather, freshman Zach Strohl still managed to tie his personal best air rifle score (587) while teammate sophomore Megan Pemberton shattered her personal best (577) air rifle with a very impressive 583. Freshman Connor O Mara also set a new high smallbore mark of 560. All in all, a pretty good weekend for the Akron team. Coming back from break early, Team Akron will train hard and prepare for the first match of Part II of the season which will take place January 26 th at the Palmyra Invitational rifle tournament in Palmyra Pennsylvania.
