Greetings from the Director Thirty-three years ago, in October,1984 my Irish dance teacher passed away. Peggy O Neill was only 69 years old at the time. I felt robbed. Peggy meant so much to me. How could Irish dance continue for me without Peggy? How would Irish dance continue in the Washington DC area? That was how much Peggy meant to me and all as well who loved Irish dance that I knew. Those that know me or have heard me speak at a performance know that but for Peggy, there would be no Seán Culkin TCRG. Between my parents, William and Philomena, and Peggy, I am eternally grateful for all those lessons they taught me, or attempted to teach me. Peggy was a good woman. And being a good woman, many people saw that in her and were attracted to her. I like to think that Peggy and I are similar in that way. Both of us have had the fortune of having so many good people in our lives that have helped make our respective Irish dance programs successful. For me, Feis Culkin is an example of just that. For over 10 years, so many good people have stepped up and made Feis Culkin a wonderful experience for our Irish dance community. Thank you to all the dedicated, talented and good Culkin school teachers and volunteers, past and present, that make Feis Culkin happen. You all make an important part of the school a reality. You all make dreams come true for the students in so many ways. This year, I especially think of my great friend and Super Culkin Dad, Brian White, RIP. And now 33 years after Peggy s passing, I can look back with pride and honestly say, I think Peggy would be happy with what I did with all those lessons she taught me. Of course, as with all things Seán, I did it at my pace with a bit of fun on the way. Go raibh maith agat. W. Seán Culkin, TCRG Director, The Culkin School of Traditional Irish Dance 3

National Anthems The Star Spangled Banner O say, can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave? The Soldier's Song We'll sing a song, a soldier's song, with cheering rousing chorus, As round our blazing fires we throng, the starry heavens o'er us; Impatient for the coming fight, and as we await the morning's light, Here in the silence of the night, we'll chant a soldier's song. Chorus Soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Ireland; Some have come from a land beyond the wave. Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sire land shall shelter the despot or the slave. Tonight we man the gap of danger In Erin's cause, come woe or weal 'Mid cannons' roar and rifles' peal, we'll chant a soldier's song. * Please join Brendan Cain in singing the National Anthems at 8:30AM 4
Feis Co-Chairs Chairs Welcome Welcome to Feis Culkin 2017!! On behalf of the Culkin School of Traditional Irish Dance, the Culkin Booster Club, the Feis Committee and the Culkin dancers and families, we would like to thank you for participating in our 16 th Annual feis. The Culkin Booster Club is the new manager for Feis Culkin and we are excited to bring new initiatives to our competition. This year, dancers will enjoy all new high quality stages, large Oireachtas sized stages for Champ competitions, an Adult Masters Cup, Choreography competition and Grade Exams held on Friday evening. Our hope is that dancers take advantage of all the new additions as well as our traditional offerings. With all the work to make this day a reality, there are many people to thank. First and foremost, our Director, Sean Culkin, our Artistic Director, Nicki Bayhurst, Denise Culkin, and all our dance instructors. Without your tireless efforts and guidance, we could not make our dancers and their families a community with which to build this event. Thank you to the Culkin Booster Club and the Feis Committee. Your vision and passion to create a high quality, welcoming event, inspired many to work and strive for the same. Our numerous volunteers, the stage crew, stage designers, feis scheduler, tabulation, awards, bake sale, sponsorship and more. know that you all are the heart of our community and you all are the ones that make this event possible. The inspiration for our new Treble Reel competition is our own Meaghan. Meaghan has grown up in our school and has competed at all levels and reached her goal of qualifying for Nationals as a U15 dancer this past December at the SRO in Baltimore! Unfortunately, a short time later, she was diagnosed with cancer and underwent treatment. Her example of strength and resilience during this past year has focused all of us on the importance of family, friends, community and faith. We invite you to participate in our Charity Treble Reel for the Make-A-Wish Foundation in honor of our dancer, Meaghan, who will be present for the competition. We love you MK! Lastly, as Co-Chairs, we would like to express our deep appreciation to our husbands and children for their continued love and support through the crazy process of planning and preparing for this feis. The Caden family and the Ionata family wish you all luck, health and happiness! Stephanie Caden & Colleen Ionata Feis Culkin Co-Chairs Chairs 5

Charity Treble Reel Hi Irish dancers! My name is Meaghan and I started dancing for the Culkin School when I was six (ten years ago). Irish dancing taught me a lot about having fun and working through adversity, but nothing could prepare me for being diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. That's where Make-A-Wish stepped in to help give me hope by granting my wish to go see Hamilton in New York City. By participating in today s Charity Treble Reel, you can show the world how amazing the Irish dance community is and help grant the wishes of children and teens with life-threatening illnesses. Best of luck today! Meaghan 8
