Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin win the Nobel Peace Prize for their progress toward achieving a Middle East accord. Jonestown incident: In Guyana, Jim Jones leads his Peoples Temple cult in a mass murder-suicide that claims 918 lives in all, 909 of them at Jonestown itself, including over 270 children. The first Susan B. Anthony dollar enters circulation. Cleveland, Ohio becomes the first major American city to go into default since the Great Depression, under Mayor Dennis Kucinich. The Shah of Iran flees Iran with his family, relocating to Egypt after a year of turmoil. A nuclear power plant accident at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, releases radiation. Nickelodeon Television Channel, a children s cartoon channel, launches as The Pinwheel Network. Conservatives win the British general election; Margaret Thatcher becomes the new prime minister. Sports Progrma moved to the new Black Diamond Distict. The All-District Football Team had 4 Dragons: Wayne Hall, Bobby Vandyke, Kevin McClananhan & Bobby Lester. The Football Team s record was 4-6. First set of female trainers (Sherrie Hickson & Paige Layne) joins traditional male trainers. Track Team goes to State for the first time. First girls Tennis Team. Basketball Team captures Black Diamond District; the first Distict Tournment since late 1950 s. Most important basketball victory was a 85-84 win over Council. Sherrii Hickson was crowned Homecoming Queen. The Senior Class was the Float Contest with their float Glory to the highest Dragon. Janet Roase was Miss GHS. Paige Layne was the Basketball Sweatheart.
