GENERAL INFORMATION INTRODUCTION The purpose of the Athletes and Team Officials Guide is to ensure that all Elite Athletes and Team Leaders are well informed about all procedures concerning the Vattenfall World Triathlon Stockholm 2017. Please keep in mind that this information can change and the final race information will be provided to the athletes and the team managers at the athletes briefing. The main venue and second transition is located in the city centre of Stockholm at Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace). ELITE ATHLETES LOUNGE Facilities including athletes lounge and toilets are provided to the athletes at the start area (City Hall) and finish area Slottsbacken. Sealed bottles of water, fruit and energy bars will be offered to the athletes before and after the race in the athletes lounge. DOPING CONTROL Doping Control will be performed according to the ITU/WADA rules. Tests will be conducted at First Hotel Reisen (next to the venue) after the races, and potentially after the briefing on Thursday 24th MEDICAL SERVICES First Aid and Emergency Medical Services will be available at the venue on August 26 th before and during the competition hours. Medical and paramedical personnel will be available throughout competition times. Several ambulances will be available to provide emergency transfer to hospital. A medical tent will be provided on site at the finish area. Possible medical services at the venue are free of charge. Treatment in clinics and practices is to be paid by the participants. SECURITY A private security company, Avarn, will be responsible for the venue security and community police and Field of Play (FOP) marshals will patrol around the Field of Play. ACCOMODATION There are two official hotels in different areas of town. Free shuttle service is available to/from these hotels from/to the airport. The shuttle service is also available from/to the airport to/from a drop off point at the central station. 1. First Hotel Reisen, located 100m from the finish. 2. Hotel Amaranten, near the City Hall. Bookings are done directly with the hotel. Information on dates and prices were sent out to all national team coaches in April. POST-OFFICE The nearest post office is located on Gamla Stan close to Slussen. The company Nirvana will be your contact for the shuttle service. You will be able to book your shuttle on our website shortly. TRAINING TRAINING SESSIONS IN THE SWIMMING POOL Pre-competition swimming training can be done at Kronobergsbadet (25m pool) from Wednesday August 23 until Saturday August 26. There is free admission for athletes if you show your accreditation card at the entrance. Should you want to swim before the race briefing, you can pick up your accreditation at the First Hotel Reisen on Skeppsbron (next to the venue). We have reserved the following lanes/times at Kronobergsbadet: Wednesday August 23. 1 lane 8-10 Thursday August 24. 2 lanes 8-10 Friday August 25. 2 lanes 8-11 (Please note that there s the bike familiarization at 10.30 and swim familiarization at 11.15) Please note that bikes are not allowed inside the pool facilities. They can only be parked outside at your own risk. Coaches can reserve lanes by sending an email to fredrik.kessiakoff@ironman.com no later than Sunday, July 30. Lanes not reserved by then will be cancelled. Kronobergsbadet is located within walking distance from Hotel Amaranten or the Rådhuset metro station. To get there from the First Hotel Reisen, walk to the Kungsträdgården metro station (8 minutes), take the blue line in the direction Akalla or Hjulsta (it does not matter which because you will get off before the line splits) for 2 stops and get off at Rådhuset. PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION The official hotel First Hotel Reisen (as well as the race venue) is within a short walking distance from the Slussen (red/green line), Gamla Stan (red/green line) and Kungsträdgården (blue line) subway stations. Hotel Amaranten can be reached via Rådhuset The swimming pool at Eriksdalsbadet can be reached via the green line of the Stockholm subway. Get off at the station Skanstull. BIKE TRAINING First Hotel Reisen Starting at the race venue. Head east along the water on Strandvägen, towards Gärdet and Djurgården. There are cycling loops on both Djurgården and Gärdet which can be repeated as many times as desired. The roads are quiet and well paved. In addition, they offer picturesque views. The route is not closed to traffic. You are cycling at your own risk. ATHLETES AND TEAM OFFICIALS GUIDE (v1.0) Page 10 of 16
RUN TRAINING Here is a suggestion for run training. The loop is 7km. If you start from First Hotel Reisen and run along Strandvägen, you have just shy of 2km to the start of the loop. You can also shorten the actual loop by 2km by turning around at the first bridge (Djurgårdsbrunn). For track running we recommend the old Olympic stadium Stadion, which is open to the public on event-free days. COURSE FAMILIARIZATION SWIM You will be able to familiarize yourself with the swim course on Friday, August 25 th from 11.15 to 12.15. The location will be the same as the start of the race City Hall, about 2km away from the venue/finish. Please note: It is forbidden to swim outside the test swimming zone at any time because of safety reasons and shipping traffic! ATHLETES AND TEAM OFFICIALS GUIDE (v1.0) Page 11 of 16
BIKE / RUN You will be able to familiarize yourself with the bike course on Friday, August 25 th at 10.30. Athletes gather outside the City Hall - parking lot next to transition (see map 2). You will be escorted by police for two laps on the bike course. Please note, that the official race courses are otherwise not open for training before the races. INFORMATION ABOUT THE FOP START The start area is at City Hall. Athletes will start from a pontoon (0,6m high) and stand in a starting position approximately 70cm wide. The Race Referee with the assistance of ITU Technical Officials, who are assigned to the start, will start each race. The athletes are required to leave their last minute gear at the swim start inside a dedicated box and the LOC will carry those bags back to the Athletes Lounge. SWIM COURSE There are two laps to swim. The first lap is 1000 meters and the second is 500 meters. The first turn is in 480m. You will exit via stairs on the side of the start pontoon. The water temperature in Riddarfjärden at the end of August can be expected to be roughly 19-21 C. You will find actual information about the water temperature on the website: http://stockholm.triathlon.org BIKE COURSE Generally flat profile with the exception of the Palace hill. There is an initial 4,6 km from transition to the Palace, followed by nine laps of 4,0 km to ride, so a total of 40,6 km The route is technically demanding, due to many changes of direction and tight turns. Generally good tarmac, but some cobble stones around the Palace. Athletes who are lapped are taken out of the race. The first runner, last biker -scenario is applicable for this event. In this case the biker will be taken off the course. WHEEL STATIONS There will be two wheel stations. The first one will be a neutral wheel station with LOC provided wheels, located at Kungsträdgården after about 2.5km into the lap. The second station will be at the top of the Palace Hill, just after exiting the transition 2 area. Here you can place your own wheels. PENALTY BOX The penalty box is 20m before the entrance to the transition area. RUN COURSE Generally flat course except of the Palace hill. There are four laps of 2.5km to run. Surface mostly tarmac and cobble stones. AID STATIONS The aid stations are located on the run course at km 0.0 and km 1.2. Closed 0.5 liter bottles of sealed water will be handed out. WEATHER CONDITIONS Despite its northern location, Stockholm has relatively mild weather compared to other locations at similar latitude, or even farther south. Temperatures in August range between 13 C to 20 C with an average of 17 C. RESULTS Results will be uploaded live at the ITU s official website: www.triathlon.org All the results information will be distributed to the Team Leaders at the LOC Information Office. PROTEST & APPEALS Standard procedures will be followed according to the ITU Competition Rules. ACCREDITATION LOC will provide all athletes, coaches, technical officials, journalists, etc. with an official accreditation card according to the ITU Event Operational and Technical Requirements. Accreditation cards for athletes and coaches will be handed out during the official registration on August 24 th after the Race Briefing. Only accredited persons will be allowed to access certain venue areas. Accreditation cards are number-coded and provide access to specific areas of the competition areas. All accredited persons are requested to carry their accreditation cards with them at all times and to show them upon request. ACCREDITATION CARD REQUEST National Federation representatives and observers apply for accreditation by sending their request to the ITU. VISA PROCEDURE Please mail all the required information (Visa Support Letter Information), if required for your entrance to the country of Sweden, to the ITU: ituhdq@triathlon.org.
