Hyannis Yacht Club Organized 1927 Commodore s Report The Telltale May 2009 May! And that means in the cycle of life at HYC the docks are in and the snowbirds have returned. It s time to start planning our boating activities for what I think is the best time of the year. The swim/sail program registrations, cruising itineraries, racing events and schedules are all being finalized. There are plenty of on-the-water activities for all to partake through participation for some and volunteering for others so we can accomplish all we d like to do. Speaking of participation the annual spring, and here on the Cape I use that term lightly, launching of the docks had a great turn out on, by far, the worst weather day that I can remember. To compound things the lumber to build the 3 new docks did not arrive until the day before at 1:00pm. Within 24 hours these docks were built and launched along with the other docks (approx. 80) on Saturday, April 11th. The weather went steadily down hill, low 40 temps, with the wind blowing 15 20 knots by the time the last of the docks were set in place at 4:30pm. So, thank you to all volunteers for building and launching the docks, cooking and serving the hearty food; we couldn t have done it without all of you. A very special thanks to Jim Reed, Randy Wallin, Jared Wallin and Mike Murphy for a job well done under very difficult conditions. This is also the time of year when we welcome our new members to the Club. We look forward to their involvement in the areas of their interest as they help perpetuate our many Club activities. Mark June 5th on your calendar as the Membership Committee along with the new members host this members party. There are two special events this month. The first is our Club s commissioning on Sunday, May 17th beginning at 3:00pm, and the following weekend, Memorial Day weekend, the Figawi race with activities at the Club on Friday, May 22nd and Monday, May 25th. These events will help us swing into the summer frame of mind. So get out, come on down and enjoy the good weather and all the Club has to offer. See you around the Club. ~ Jack Klim Commissioning 2009 The Officers and Trustees of the Hyannis Yacht Club cordially invite all members to the 2009 HYC Commissioning as we kickoff the season in style Sunday, May 17, 2009 3:00 5:00pm Ceremony begins promptly at 3:00pm reception to follow Hyannis Yacht Club 490 Ocean Street Hyannis, Massachusetts 02601 (508) 778-6100

General Manager s Report As you may recall, last fall I wrote an article concerning HYC pride and how excited we are about a new initiative for the summer of 2009. This initiative - HYC Pride - although targeted to our youth, will require the help of all of our members. We hope to instill in our youth a sense of pride in the Club, pride in the grounds and facilities, and pride in our boats. This will require a strong commitment from everyone but especially the Youth Committee, Youth Staff, and the Junior Yacht Club. However, every member can help by setting a good example and being a supportive role model. Along the same vein, the Club will continue to make additional improvements in our efforts to go green. We are experimenting with a variety of products HYC Race Committee Application Would you like to become a member of the prestigious HYC Race Committee? Positions are open for One Design, Ocean Race, and Regatta. Please go to the website at www.hyannisyachtclub.org to sign up. We are looking for volunteers to help with the following events: Ocean Race Committee (See schedule on website and page 6) Wednesday Nite Beer Can Series Wilbur Cup Series Other Special Events One Design Race Committee (See schedule on website and page 6) Thursday Night Series Sunday Series Other Special Events Regatta July 31 through August 2 Glamorous opportunities are open in one or more of the following positions: Signal Boat Scoring Patrol Boat Member Communication Mark Boat Protest Committee (Experience Required) Banquets, Parties, and Balls Committee No experience is necessary, we will train all new participants, but if you have had prior experience that s great just let us know. that are more eco-friendly. Look for all Styrofoam products to be replaced by paper and look for less reliance on plastics. Additionally, we will continue a full recycling program for all cans, bottles and paper. Incidentally, Champ House is the beneficiary of our returnable cans and bottles. They help us by picking up weekly, and we contribute the deposit to this very worthy cause. We would very much like HYC to be a leader amongst private clubs in the field of green. Please don t hesitate to share ideas that you feel would help to support these initiatives. Thanks and we ll see you around the Club. ~ Wes Richardson Safe Boating Course America s Boating Course (formerly Boat Smart) Course begins Monday, July 6th from 6:00 8:00pm Exam date July 27th Course is $30 Space is limited This is a 4-week course for youth ages 12 to 16. Docks & Grounds Saturday, April 11th was the docks launch and work party, one that will be remembered for quite some time. The weekend got off to a rocky start on Friday with an eleventh hour, actually 1:00pm, delivery of dock materials shipped in from Virginia. As soon as the lumber hit the parking lot, a crew of seasoned craftsmen started building the top-side structure for the new docks. Two of the three docks were flipped by hand to be ready for final assembly and decking for the Saturday work party. Saturday morning started reasonably well with the rain holding off. Our work crew began arriving around 9:00am and was immediately put to work to complete the new docks construction. Unfortunately the rain began around 10:00am, but we persevered until the three docks were completed and ready to float. Mother Nature seemed to be against us! While the dock construction was going on, a north wind was building apparently holding back the 2:00pm tide from coming in towards shore that would have helped us float the docks. Baxter s Crane Service finally had to assist and push some of the docks into the water. Of course the work party took time for fortification taking a break for an excellent lunch, thanks to staff and volunteers. The group of more than 40 volunteers then got back into foul weather gear, and by 4:30pm, completed the process of moving, floating and joining the docks complex. Under these extreme adverse conditions, this was a great effort by the work party crew and staff of HYC. So thank you all for all your help in getting us started on what will be a great 2009 season. ~ Randy Wallin and Jim Reed Docks and Grounds Regatta Committee Update Regatta Meeting - Friday, May 8th 6:00pm social hour - please bring an appetizer 7:00pm business meeting Our planning continues for this year s regatta on July 31st, August 1st, and August 2nd. Ocean Race Our goal is to think out of the box and get people off their moorings. With that in mind, our planning sessions have been terrific. With more than 30 participants brainstorming there have been lots of great ideas, enthusiasm and interested volunteers. We intend to mix it up with the J-22 crews on a couple of Thursday nights, have a version of Sail-a-bration in June to get lots of new folks introduced and involved, and perhaps our most exciting effort is to get high school and college sailors out with us on a regular basis. Watch your email during the spring and summer for more details, so be sure we have your correct email address. The tentative summer schedule is set out below and the NOR s should be posted by mid- May. Thanks to all who have supported our efforts to get the program going. Remember: Life is short go sailing!
