From: http://autoweek.com/article/sports-cars/indycar-sanction-mazda-mx-5-cup-series-2017 IndyCar to sanction Mazda MX-5 Cup series in 2017 MX-5 Cup is part of the Mazda Road to 24 sports-car ladder October 28, 2016 Mazda Motorsports and Andersen Promotions announced on Friday that IndyCar -- the governing body of the Verizon IndyCar Series -- will sanction the Mazda MX-5 Cup series beginning with the 2017 season. The Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires is the signature spec series for the Mazda Road to 24, the sports car counterpart to the Mazda Road to Indy presented by Cooper Tires. The Mazda MX-5 Cup champion receives a $200,000 scholarship to race in either the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge or Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda. The final rung on the Road to 24 ladder is the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship New for 2017, the MX-5 Cup Rookie of the Year will earn a $50,000 scholarship. In total, MX-5 Cup pays more than half a million dollars in prize money and scholarships. This sanctioning agreement with IndyCar for the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires is based upon our long and productive relationship with Dan Andersen, Andersen Promotions and IndyCar, said John Doonan, director of motorsports at Mazda North American Operations. We have worked closely with them to grow the Mazda Road to Indy into the finest open-wheel ladder in the world. Now, we are striving to grow this series, which is the first step of our sports car ladder known as the Mazda Road to 24. "In only one year, we have sold more than 120 of the newest generation of MX-5 Cup cars and have seen starting fields of up to 40 cars. By teaming with IndyCar, we believe the series will thrive." In 2017 the MX-5 Cup will consist of a 12 races held on six event weekends, plus the second annual Global MX-5 Cup Invitational, a non-points-paying event for Mazda racers from around the world. Four of those event weekends will be held during Verizon IndyCar Series events at Barber Motorsports Park (April 20-23), Road America (June 23-25), Toronto (July 14-16) and Watkins Glen International (September 1-3). The series will also compete on the road course of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the SVRA event (June 15-17) and twice at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Sept. 22-24 and the Global Invitational, Oct. 13-15). The MX-5 Cup series is considered to be a value in sports car racing. The cars are sold ready to race for $58,900. Because of the parity of the cars, the racing is close. The series is entering its 12th season of action. When Mazda approached us regarding MX-5 Cup, we felt it would be a great opportunity for IndyCar to expand upon what we re already doing with our involvement in the Mazda Road to Indy, said Jay Frye, IndyCar president of competition and operations. From: https://gplb.com/historic-can-am-race-added-to-2017-schedule/ Historic Can-Am Race Added to Long Beach Grand Prix Schedule! November 16, 2016. Next April, Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach fans will get a taste of the 1000+ horsepower engines that dominated the golden age of Can-Am racing, when the historic machines race for the first time on the worldfamous seaside circuit. The 20-minute race, which will run Saturday, April 8, will start at approximately noon, just prior to the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix event. Can-Am, shorthand for the Canadian-American Challenge Cup, was a racing series that ran at tracks in Canada and the U.S. from 1966 to 1974 and again from 1977-87. The initial era of Can-Am featured sleek, highhorsepower cars from McLaren, Porsche, Lola, Shadow and more with a list of well-known drivers that included Jim Hall, Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti, Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Bruce McLaren and John Surtees, among others. The historic event at Long Beach will feature cars from the 1966-74 era of Can-Am racing, and be sanctioned by the Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA). HMSA is thrilled to be part of the Grand Prix Long Beach, a truly iconic event with a rich motorsports history and a jewel of Southern California, said Cris Vandagriff, president of the Historic Motor Sports Association. We are proud to bring the cars from what has been called the greatest series ever created, the original Can-Am. These cars were the fastest racing cars of their day and still make the earth move when they take to the track. This will be the very first time that these exotic racing machines have competed on any street circuit, said Jim Michaelian, president & CEO of the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach. The sounds of these highpowered engines racing down Shoreline Drive will be exhilarating. Featuring a wide variety of on- and off-track activities for the entire family, the Grand Prix will be headlined by the second round of the 2017 Verizon IndyCar Series, as well as the BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix, featuring the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and its all-new prototype cars. In addition, the weekend will include the Motegi Racing Super Drift Challenge under the lights on Friday and Saturday nights; SPEED Energy Stadium Super Trucks, and the powerful sports cars of the Pirelli World Challenge. About HMSA The Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) is one of the most respected historic racing organizations in North America, producing world-class spectator events across the continent. HMSA is the sanctioning body for the world famous Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, le Sommet des Légendes at Mont-Tremblant and the Barber Historics. HMSA emphasizes the preservation and proper use of world-class historic racecars at all of its events. For more information, please visit www.hmsausa.com.
