Bill s BS 4/26/16 ATTENTION! ATTENTION! Things are about to get REAL busy! Our Solo Season starts off with a BIG weekend at Lake Erie Speedway. Test & Tune on Saturday and Solo Competition #1 on Sunday. So shake the cobwebs out, check your tire pressures and come on out! Lots of FAST FUN! Lots of prizes! February started out with a busy weekend with the 50th Ohio Winter Rally. Greg Lester, who is such a big help on our rallys was chairman. Dave Sellers and Janis Ford, who win so many of our rallys finished in a tie for 2nd with 9 points. That same weekend was the Erie Auto Show down at the Bayfront Convention Center. While the main room for the dealers was blah, outside in the hallway, our former member Brad Goetz had a gorgeous Resto-mod Corvette, a mid-50s Chevy, and a naked chassis for a Corvette that he is building for one of his Harborvette customers. VERY Nice! Auto Express had 2 Alfa Romeo 4Cs, New Motors had a BMW M4, Roth had an Audi S4. There was a new Miata MX-5, a Z-06 Corvette, a Hellcat, and one of the last new Mitsubishi EVOs. I just had to support the Cancer Society and get my picture in the Batmobile. Not a bad show for our little town. February ended with a big surprise! Balmy weather! Dave Hammer and I enjoyed setting up the rally on great hard packed snow covered roads. I had to hustle to make a bunch of changes on Saturday to get around the worst of the new potholes. We had a fantastic turnout, 10 cars including 5 novices, 3 of which were Tourist. Everybody had a great time, even if they got a continued on p.10 by Bill Stewart Peter Cunningham s Pirelli World Challenge Acura TLX-GT at the Cleveland Auto Show Auto Express brought a Alfa Romeo 4C Spider to the Erie Auto Show 2 In the Batmobile, to support the American Cancer Society, at the Erie Auto Show Bob Hart passed away in January. His 25 year SCCA anniversary would have been in February. He was a Gunnery Sargent in the Marines and a mechanic at Mack Truck. Bob was MOPAR enthusiast, with a Dodge Shelby Charger. He brought his son Al and his grandson Andrew Siefert into the club. I think the last event he made was the 2014 Covered Bridge Rally with his grandson, Eric Seifert. He served as a Club Racing Tech Inspector and in Sound Control and was invaluable at our Mini-Grand Prixes. Thanks Bob. RIP
Sno-Go Road Rally February 28, 2016 We would like to thank everyone who came out to our Sno-Go Rally. After 2 weeks of setting up the rally with almost perfect hard packed snow, Mother Nature took the rally s name to heart and delivered beautiful 60 degree weather. Snow Gone Rally! Just a gorgeous day. The challenge became dodging all the potholes! All the cars got seriously dirty and everyone received a bottle of car wash at the finish. The rally went from the Burger King on I-90 and Sterritania down to a break in Saegertown and finished at Crowley s in Platea. Lots of prizes! Major thanks to Dave Hammer, Logan Flaherty, Joel Donaldson, and Kathy Vanderwende. Your help was greatly appreciated. Thanks also to Dave Sellers, Janis Ford, Ron Johnstonbaugh and Caleb Abbott who helped with scoring. Kathy Vanderwende, Andrew Ferrara, Logan Flaherty, Joel Donaldson, Andrew Donaldson, Lance Dunn, Dave Hammer, Rich Hall, Bill Stewart, Nick Simon, Matt Curry, and Ron Madurski. RE Sam Mehler called the meeting to order at 7:03 PM. Dave Hammer moved and Logan Flaherty seconded that the minutes of the January meeting be approved. Motion passed. Committee Reports Treasurer: Kathy Vanderwende reported that our current balance is $11,475.91. We picked up $285 last month and have had no expenses so far. Trophies: Dave Hammer had nothing new to report. Membership Report: Bill Stewart reported that we have 85 members listed, but 3 of those are overdue. Bob Hart passed away. Bob was MOPAR enthusiast, with a Dodge Shelby Charger. He brought his son Al and his grandson Andrew Siefert into the club. He served as a Club Racing Tech Inspector and in Sound Control and was invaluable at our Mini-Grand Prixes. KV signed the Facebook guestbook. Registration: We did get the year end and the last Solo results. They will be posted on our web page and in the Pit Signal shortly. We need to cross train on the software and classing. Sam requested that we have a mock event to practice. Tech: Sam will update the web site with the Solo results and new officers. Kathy brought the book of samples. Logan suggested that we need to be more creative in our merchan- Merchandise: dise. Pit Signal: Bill reported now that we have the Solo results, the Pit Signal should be out shortly. He has had a difficult time trying to describe his Ferrari 488 drive at the track in Las Vegas. Trophies: Logan asked for suggestions about old trophies. Old Business Sam has our SCCA Regional Charter application ready to submit. He replaced Tim on our bank account. Tim Mackey needs to distribute the Tires for Less certificates. Bill will send the trophies our with the new Pit Signal. We discussed sponsorships. Dealers? Shops? Whole season? Single events? Cash? Services? Sam will work on a proposal. Bill reported on the National Convention and the Teen Street Survival Summit in Las Vegas. This was the most enthusiastic in many years. Our Mission is To Have Fun with Cars! Our membership is up about 5%. and we had a $400K surplus. The Club is seriously interested in investing in new programs. Track Night in America was a big success. Heyward Wagner, the Director of Experiential Programs led many of the seminars. He overflows with enthusiasm and is not afraid to try new things and is not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. He brainstormed a program called Targa in which you visit 3 different tracks in 3 days. continued on p.8 7
February minutes continued Pro Racing had a great year, with Amy Ruman winning the Trans-Am Championship. The new 3rd Gen Spec Racer kits are selling great. The new CAM, Classic American Muscle classes did well. The Club is working on a new office system that would include providing registration for all events, replacing motorsportreg and dlb. Their was a special presentation on a electric car/stem curriculum program for schools called Greenpower. It was developed in the UK and has been implemented in the Huntsville, AL schools. The SCCA Foundation will have a raffle to win a VIP trip for 2 to the F1 race at COTA. Heyward Wagner and Mark Andy are almost finished with a webinar and online test for Solo Safety Stewards. We need to be sure that we are using the latest Minor Waivers. For passive spectators, only one parent s signature is required. Active participants, such as passengers are required to have signatures from both parents that are witnessed by an SCCA member or are notarized. SCCA is developing a Kids Club, to keep the young busy while the adults play. The Starting Line program will be expanded to PDX and Club Racing. Another experiment will be Bracket Racing. Roger Penske was there to be inducted into the SCCA Hall of Fame as was WNY s Bob Henderson who, when he was on the Board of Governors instigated Showroom Stock racing. Bob also was instrumental in the approval of the creation of our Misery Bay Region. Bill and Neohio s Bob McDonald went to the Tire Rack Teen Street Survival Summit the day after the convention. Michelin will donate up to $750 to pay for a site. Scott Dobler is SCCA s new Program Manager. Mahoning Valley s Sandi Kryder won a special award. Rally: Bill received the sanction for the Sno-Go Rally on February 28th. The 50th Ohio Winter Rally will be Saturday. We need workers and entries. Ideally we need 6 to 8 workers. Bill also needs pre-runners the weekend before. We discussed ways to get more Misery Bay participation. Advertising! Solo: We have Lake Erie Speedways proposed contract. We have a tentative schedule. April 30 & May 1, May 22, June 19, July 24, August 14, September 4 & 25, and a rain date of October 2. Bill mentioned that a sanction includes 3 days and could be for a Teen Street Survival. Sam will ask the board for approval. Dave moved and Andy seconded that the meeting be adjourned pending the 50-50. Motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:34. Bill Stewart Secretary Misery Bay Region SCCA Membership Meeting Cornerstone Bar & Grill March 4, 2016 Members in attendance: Sam Mehler. Kathy Vanderwende, Lance Dunn, Andrew Ferrara, Joel Donaldson, Dave Hammer, Rich Hall, Bill Stewart, Justin Stull, Tim Mackey, and Ron Madurski. RE Sam Mehler called the meeting to order at 7:18 PM. Lance Dunn moved and Justin Stoll. seconded that the minutes of the January meeting be approved. Motion passed. Committee Reports Treasurer: Kathy Vanderwende reported that our current balance is $9,648.91. We picked up $638 last month but paid out $2,180, mostly our LES deposit. 8 continued on p.9
February minutes continued Trophies: Dave Hammer had nothing new to report. Membership Report: Bill Stewart reported that we have 84 members listed, but 2 of those are overdue. Tech: No report. Merchandise: Nothing new. Pit Signal: Bill reported that the Winter Edition has been e-mailed. The next edition will have a eulogy for Bob Hart. He also reported that it was announced on Facebook today that Nelson Ledges has been purchased. Rally: Bill reported that our Sno-Go Rally was last Sunday. While the weather during the week was beautiful hard packed snow, Sunday it got up to a sunny 62. We had 10 entries and it was won by Dave Sellers and Janis Ford up from Columbus with a total of 6 points. Major thanks to KV, Dave Hammer, Joel Donaldson, and Logan Flaherty for all their help. Solo: Sam reported that we signed the contract with LES and KV paid the deposit. Old Business Sam has submitted our SCCA Regional Charter application. He was able, with Tim s help, to change our contact information on SCCA s web site. He needs to approve Joel and Andy to submit Solo sanction applications. Sam has not been able to put together a sponsorship package. He replaced Tim on our bank account. Tim Mackey still needs to distribute the Tires for Less certificates. New Business Bill has been to a couple Tire Rack Teen Street Survival meetings in Cleveland. Neohio and Mahoning Valley SCCA and Northern Ohio BMW Club are working with an advertising agency to develop Teen Street Survival Schools. They would appreciate our help and encourage us to have a school here. We discussed using LES. A classroom is required. We would provide lunch. We could use the infield for a skidpad and wet it down. The main parking lot surface maybe too rough. Joel suggested Presque Isle Downs. It is for teens 15 to 21. We would need an instructor for every 2 students. A typical school would have 15 to 35 students. Logan suggested a high school like McDowell. Sam will reach out to Millcreek. The first school will be at Boardman Park in Boardman, OH on April 17th. Sam was in Austin, Texas last week and attempted to check out COTA. Tim said that he was credited for 5 new membership signups when he renewed. Joel announced that Cruise Night Erie would be June 11th and August 27th. Tim moved and Andy seconded that the meeting be adjourned pending the 50-50. The winnings were donated to the club. Motion passed and the meeting was adjourned at 8:01. Bill Stewart Secretary 9
Bill s BS continued little dirty. I had great help too. I was starting to panic when Lance Dunn, Bob and Brenda Nick all called in sick and all these cars showed up at the Burger King. I was SO glad when KV did registration and Logan and Joel showed up to work checkpoints. Dave and I could not have done it alone. With all the Novices, I am so grateful for the scoring by Dave Sellers, Janis Ford, Ron Johnstonbaugh and Caleb Abbott. A great event, all the way around! The next weekend, I went a little overboard. Thursday, I went to the Cleveland Auto Show. Always great. The Classic Car Show had some interesting ones. Lots of Mustangs and Camaros, and a low rider station wagon! The main show had all the new cars, plus Ford had an impressive driving simulator and a couple of robots and the new Focus RS, 350hp! Acura had both the new NSX and the Pirelli World Challenge RealTime TLX-GT. REAL Performance! Jeep and RAM had their obstacle course rides and Cadillac, Subaru, and Hyundai had actual test drives out back. Always worth the trip. Saturday, the Allegheny and Northern Ohio Porsche Clubs had an instructor s school with the Mid-Ohio School s Tommy Bryne. Always impressive. NOR s first DE is this weekend at Mid-Ohio. ARPCA is at Watkins Glen the next weekend. Both PCA regions are very friendly and welcome non-members and non-porsches. I have included their events in my schedule. Next, I was off to Porsche s Tech Tactics East at their warehouse and training center in Easton, PA. The presentations included Brad-Penn Oil s Rick Byron about the zinc that old engines require, one about Michelin s latest, in depth on the new 991-2 Carrera, and Automobile Associates Jim Newton on classic Porsches. Comments on Seinfeld s cars, much! I got to talk to Ray Shaffer, the Manager of Porsche s Classic and Delivery Center at their new headquarters in Atlanta. I knew him from my connection with Brumos and NORPCA s Kellen Miller works for him now as a classic tech. The track and the classes there are impressive. I really need to check that place out. The finale was the unveiling of the new Cayman GT4 Clubsport. These will race in PCA Club Racing events and modified ones finished 3rd and 6th at the IMSA Continental Tire race at Daytona. Great trip! Long weekend. I really missed going down to the 12 Hours of Sebring, but I m very glad I missed the 3 hour red flag for the rain. In 1965, Chaparral won as they raced through 5 inches of rain, with no drainage on the start-finish straight. The Patron Honda Ligier and the Corvettes have done very well so far while the new Ford GT has severe teething problems. They hope to have 4 cars at LeMans. They all will appear at the Sahlen s 6 Hour of the Glen at the beginning of July. 10 I have been very busy helping to plan several Tire Rack Street Survival Schools. Mahoning Valley did the first one at Boardman, OH and Neohio is trying very hard to do 2 in the Cleveland area. We just need sites and students. The statistics for teen accidents is terrible. Automobile crashes are the number on cause of teen deaths and distracted driving is making it worse. Our Charlie Campbell has been busy with his 2 Miatas. I ll have more details next month, but he went down to the VIR Majors and was on the FP pole and it all went downhill from there. He will be racing this weekend at Summit Point in both the Campbell Trucking FP Miata and the Spec Miata. You don t want to miss him at the Cumberland-Majors at Pitt Race May 14 & 15, racing both days. Charlie does us proud. His FP finish at the Runoffs will be remembered for a very long time. With the Runoffs coming to Mid-Ohio this year, their Majors weekend June3-5 has over 400 entries, including Charlie, of course. It will be crazy, you don t want to miss it! The Majors weekend up at Watkins Glen is June 24-26. You can get upclose and personal with me and the racers in pit lane. I ll be glad to have you. The first Pro race in the area will be Trans-Am at Watkins Glen, May 14&15. The Glen has been completely repaved and I know Amy Ruman can t wait to continue her winning ways. I ll be going up to Mosport, now Canadian Tire Motorsports Park to help with Pirelli World Challenge May 20-22. Great track, great people, great time. Well Steel Cities and Western New York have already started their Solo seasons. There is something at Pitt Race almost every weekend. Track Night in America returns to Pitt Race, be sure to check the schedule. Neohio lost their Solo site at Lakeland College. NORPCA lost the same site but they are trying out the Euclid Square Mall. If that works out, maybe Neohio can use it too. Sites can be tough to find. We are VERY lucky to have LES. I know Andy and Joel are hard at work to get this weekend and our season going, so be sure and come out! Get Ready! The Season is HERE! Bill
