Senior receiver Tavon Austin played tailback for the first time since high school and responded with a WVU record 344-rushing yards, coupled with 82 yards receiving and 146 on kickoff returns, and ended his night with an impressive 572 all-purpose yards. Aside from the school single-game rushing mark, Austin s all-purpose yards were the most in school and Big 12 history, and the most in college football in 2012. It was second most in NCAA history, as he fell just six yards shy of the record. Stedman Bailey had 13 catches for 205 yards and four touchdowns, his second straight 200-yard receiving effort, and it came on the heels of Geno Smith s 320-yard passing day against the Sooners. However, Oklahoma had plenty of strong performances also to propel it to victory. Senior quarterback Landry Jones passed for 554 yards and six touchdowns, with 10 of his completions going to receiver Kenny Stills, who also caught four touchdowns. Jalen Saunders had 123 yards receiving, and Justin Brown added another 112. The Mountaineers tied the game at 10-10 at the 10:00 mark on Andrew Buie s one-yard rush. But the Sooners scored two-plays later on a 76-yard pass to Saunders, and on their next possession with a four-yard Stills touchdown catch to open up a 24-10 cushion. The Mountaineers added a 33-yard touchdown reception by Bailey that ended a 91-yard drive, but Oklahoma answered with a 75-yard scoring drive and a 31-17 lead at the half, when Damien Williams burst through the line of scrimmage for a 48-yard touchdown run. West Virginia outscored the Sooners, 13-7, in the third quarter on two Austin touchdown runs. Sooner points in the quarter came on an 11-yard catch from Stills, and the score was 38-30 in OU s favor, heading to the fourth. Smith connected with Bailey on a four-yard score, closing the gap to 38-36 after the conversion failed. WVU grabbed its first lead at the 7:12 mark, 43-38, when Smith found Bailey again, this time from eight-yards out. OU answered with a seven-yard touchdown from Jones to Stills and a 44-43 advantage, before the Smith to Bailey connection worked again on a 40-yard strike with just 2:53 left, putting WVU up 49-44. But Jones calmly led OU down the field and won the game with just 24 seconds left on his fourth TD pass to Stills on fourth-and-three. Oklahoma finished with 662 yards, while WVU had a strong 778 yards of total offense. LAST TIME AT NORMAN 1982 WEST VIRGINIA 41, Oklahoma 27 (Norman) - Underdog West Virginia got off to a great start in the 1982 season by upsetting the Sooners of Oklahoma 41-27 before a then-record crowd of 75,008. While Oklahoma rushed for 319 yards, West Virginia dominated the passing game by gaining 321 yards. Added together, they made for an extremely offensive contest. West Virginia won the toss but decided to kick, and the speed of the Sooners was proven quickly. In its first possession of the game, Oklahoma scored with 12:27 left in the quarter making it a 7-0 ball game. Oklahoma scored on its second possession, too, as quarterback Kelly Phelps rolled right for six yards over the West Virginia goal line. The Michael Keeling extra point made the count 14-0, and the Mountaineers were suddenly faced with a great challenge. They accepted the challenge and dominated the second quarter by scoring 20 points. With 6:05 left in the quarter, Paul Woodside booted a 26-yard field goal, and the West Virginia drive had just begun. A Jeff Hostetler 52-yard pass to Rich Hollins set up a TD pass to Mark Raugh with 3:55 left. Woodside s perfect kick made it a 14-10 game. In the closing seconds of the half, Woodside kicked for three more points, and Hostetler dropped a bomb to wide receiver Darrell Miller with five seconds left to raise the West Virginia lead to 20-14 before intermission. Oklahoma fought back in the third quarter by scoring a fast seven in its first possession. West Virginia quickly retaliated with a Curlin Beck scramble and Woodside kick. With 3:32 remaining in the quarter, Oklahoma s Keith Stansberry recovered a West Virginia blocked punt for an easy six. Keeling missed the extra point attempt and the game was tied 27-27. The remaining moments were all West Virginia. With a Darrell Miller touchdown and a Woodside kick, the Mountaineers jumped out to a 34-27 lead. A 43-yard touchdown run by Curlin Beck clinched a West Virginia victory (41-27) in the closing seconds of the game. Hostetler attempted 37 passes, completing 17 of them for 321 yards. On only two snags, Darrell Miller earned 64 yards on the day.

LAST GAME: WEST VIRGINIA 24, WILLIAM & MARY 17 MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Aug 31, 2013) - New faces made their mark on West Virginia football for the first time as the Mountaineers won their season and home opener by a 24-17 count over William & Mary. Charles Sims, Dreamius Smith, Wendell Smallwood, Dakiel Shorts, Ronald Carswell, Devonte Mathis and Nick O Toole were just some of the new names to make their debut in a Mountaineer uniform, and all had a role in the season s first victory. Sims led all rushers with 120 yards on 23 carries, including an 11-yard touchdown rush for the season s first score. Smith added 40 yards rushing, while Smallwood scored the go-ahead touchdown on a two-yard rush in the fourth quarter. Carswell showed his explosiveness with a 69-yard third quarter touchdown reception, and Shorts and Mathis combined for 11 catches for 107 yards. Another pleasant surprise was the punting of O Toole, a redhsirt sophomore, who flipped the field in WVU s favor on four of his five punts. He averaged 50.6 yards per punt with a long of 60 yards. The weather was hot and steamy at Milan Puskar Stadium, and the Mountaineers started with a hot hand by taking their opening drive 67 yards on eight plays for a 7-0 lead behind Sims 11-yard touchdown rush. However, the rest of the first half belonged to William & Mary, as the Tribe tied the game at the 3:28 mark of the first quarter on a Darnell Laws one-yard touchdown reception. William & Mary took the lead at the 8:56 mark of the second quarter, when quarterback Michael Graham rushed in from five-yards out for a 14-7 Tribe advantage. W&M upped its advantage to 17-7 at the half, when kicker John Carpenter added a 29-yard field goal with just 0:23 left. The Mountaineers came up with two key scores in the third quarter to tie the game, before heading into the fourth. At the 8:44 mark, kicker Josh Lambert connected on a 22-yard field goal to end a 70-yard drive and pull the Mountaineers closer at 17-10. On West Virginia s next possession, quarterback Paul Millard hit a streaking Carswell for a 69-yard touchdown pass, which tied the game at 17-17 and put the momentum back on the West Virginia sideline. While the WVU offense fought back to erase a 10-point deficit, the Mountaineer defense came up big in the second half by blanking the Tribe on the scoreboard and holding them to just 108 total yards in the final two quarters of action. Both teams traded possessions in the final quarter, until West Virginia broke through for the game-winning touchdown with just 3:22 left. Smallwood capped off an eight-play, 50-yard drive with his first career WVU touchdown, which came on a two-yard run. Leading 24-17, the WVU defense wrote the final chapter in the game, as Darwin Cook intercepted a Graham pass on the ensuing drive to seal the game and allow the offense to run out the clock. West Virginia s defensive effort was led by Nick Kwiatkoski, Cook and Rowell, who combined for 19 tackles. William & Mary got 108 yards receiving from Tre McBride, while Graham passed for 207 yards and one score. The Tribe defense was led by Jerome Couplin with 14 tackles. West Virginia finished with a balanced 172 yards rushing and 237 passing for a total of 409 yards of offense. The Tribe totaled 102 yards on the game and 207 through the air for 309 total yards. The win upped West Virginia s record all-time against schools from the FCS to 13-0. The walk, a nod to the state s proud coal industry and heritage, will begin when the team is dropped off approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes before kickoff at the corner of the WVU Medical Center and Don Nehlen Drive. Fans are encouraged to line the path, which will take the team and coaching staff, led by head coach Dana Holgorsen, between the blue and light blue lots and to the entrance of the Northeast gate at Milan Puskar Stadium. The team will be escorted by the Mountaineer mascot, the cheerleading squad and members of the Pride of West Virginia, the WVU marching band, on its route. The Mantrip, named after the shuttle that typically transports miners down into an underground mine at the start of their shift, will take place before every home game this season. 2013 Home and Away Rushing Att-Yds-Avg Avg/Gm Home (1-0)...44-172-3.9...172.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-0.0....000.0 Passing Comp-Att-Yds-TD-Int Avg/Gm Home (1-0)...19-27-237-1-0...237.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-000-0-0...000.0 Total Offense Rush-Pass-Total Avg/Gm Home (1-0)... 172-237-409...409.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-0.0...000.0 Rush Defense Att-Yds-Avg Avg/Gm Home (1-0)...31-102-3.3...102.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-0.0...000.0 Pass Defense Comp-Att-Yds-TD-Int Avg/Gm Home (1-0)...18-27-207-1-1...309.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-000-0-0...000.0 Total Defense Rush-Pass-Total Avg/Gm Home (1-0)...102-207-309.0...309.0 Away (0-0)...000-000-0.0...000.0
