2008 PROSPECTUS The Presbyterian College baseball team opens its first season in 2008. The upcoming year is also its fourth season under Elton Pollock s watch and the Blue Hose enter the season looking to improve and surprise many at the highest level of college baseball. Last season the Blue Hose concluded their year with the highest winning percentage in Pollock s tenure. PC had three winning streaks of three games or more and closed out its time in the South Atlantic Conference by taking two out of three games from Wingate at the PC Baseball Complex. Overall last year, PC was strong at its home diamond, winning 13 games. The Blue Hose have a great deal of stability coming back this season as six position starters from last year s squad return for PC. Jared Combs also returns to the fold for PC in the 2008 season. A starter for the Blue Hose at shortstop last season in the first three games after transferring in from Armstrong Atlantic State, Combs hurt his hand in the third game of the season against Anderson University. Combs did not play the rest of the year for PC, but recovered sufficiently to the injury and during the summer of 2007 was named to the Southern Collegiate Baseball League s All-Star team for his efforts with the Tennessee Tornados. Five of the six returning players were listed at the end of the year as the top five hitters in the PC statistics. All five batted over.300 in 2007. Senior outfielder Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) led the way for PC at the plate last season. Craven played in all 50 PC games, concluding the season with a batting average of.366. Craven had a.508 slugging percentage and rounded up a team-best 97 total bases. He was 8-for-9 on his stolen base attempts. Craven had a team-high tying 19 extra-base hits, including a team second-best 14 doubles. Fellow senior outfielder Casey Carlson (Lexington, S.C.) finished just behind Craven with a.328 batting average. Carlson led the team in RBIs (42) and slugging percentage (.514). Carlson tied with Craven with 19 extra-base hits. He concluded his output in 2007 with nine doubles, a teambest six triples and a team-high four home runs. Carlson earned a 1.000 fielding percentage. A team captain as a junior in 2007, catcher William Bolchoz (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) ended last season with a.321 batting average. Very reliable behind the dish, Bolchoz had a.975 fielding percentage. Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) led PC with 11 stolen bases last season. Lyda ended the 2007 season with a batting average of.316. Lyda tied Craven and Carlson with 19 extra-base hits, collecting a team-high 15 doubles and four triples. He had 24 RBIs. Jesse Harmon (Newberry, S.C.) ended his freshman year at the plate with a batting average of.312. Harmon had nine extra-base hits (four doubles, five triples) and ended his first season with 16 RBIs. The Blue Hose return 10 players to the pitcher s mound in 2008, which includes six players who finished with two or more wins in 2007. Returning hurler Eric Tatum (Buford, Ga.) finished with the most wins on the team with four. Tatum was 4-4 in 19 appearances. Harmon won two games from the hill for PC in 2007. The freshman also struck out a team-high 60 batters. A senior in 2008, Andrew Cockerham (Millers Creek, N.C.) was the only Blue Hose pitcher to start a game in 2007 to finish without a loss. Cockerham was 2-0. The returning Blue Hose will be led once again by both Pollock and fifth-year assistant coach Mark Johnson. Pollock was able to add a second assistant in the offseason, choosing former Blue Hose standout Charles Assey to return to the program to train the current Blue Hose. 2008 Blue Hose Baseball 3
ELTON POLLOCK Elton Pollock, a 1995 graduate of Presbyterian College, begins his fourth season as head coach of the Blue Hose baseball program. He is the third head coach in the modern day history of the Blue Hose baseball program since it was restarted in the 1988 season. In the 2007 season, Pollock and the Blue Hose finished with their highest winning percentage under his guidance. Overall, PC concluded their final DII season with 18 victories, including 13 at the PC Baseball Complex. In his second season in 2006, Pollock guided the Blue Hose to more wins than they had acquired in his first year in charge overall with 19. PC finished with seven league victories. The Blue Hose also picked up a win in the Food Lion SAC Tournament. In his first season in 2005, Pollock coached a young team to a record of 17 wins against 40 losses that included a 6-15 mark in the South Atlantic Conference regular season. The Blue Hose made great strides down the stretch, including in the 2005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. After losing to top seed Catawba College, PC responded by elimanting Mars Hill College and Newberry College to advance to the semifinals of the elimination bracket. Prior to his return to PC, Pollock had spent the previous two seasons as an assistant coach with the Blue Hose baseball program, including the 2004 campaign as a volunteer assistant coach. He is the former owner of Diamond League, Inc. (professional indoor training center) in Laurens, S.C. Pollock, a former two-sport standout at Presbyterian College from 1992-95, returned to his alma mater in 2002 after spending seven years in the business world, most recently with WorldCom in Cary, N.C. Prior to his stint at WorldCom, he worked with Delta Airlines and was a loan officer at Allison Mortgage and Palmetto Funding Group. Pollock earned a bachelor of science degree in Sociology with a minor in Computer Science from Presbyterian College in 1995. During his time at PC, he was a three-year letterwinner with the football team and a four-year letterwinner with the baseball team. Pollock finished an impressive baseball career at PC as the program s career leader in home runs (34), while ranking second in slugging percentage (.616) and triples (11), third in total bases (382), tied for fourth in runs scored (169), and fifth in batting average (.348). Following graduation, Pollock was drafted in the 15th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent three years in their minor league system before retiring in 1997. Pollock is married to the former Karen Prioleau of Greenville, S.C., and the couple has two daughters, Madison (5) and Lauren (3). Mark Johnson, Assistant COACHING STAFF Mark Johnson enters his fifth season as an assistant baseball coach for the Blue Hose. Johnson manages the Pitching Staff and is the Recruiting Coordinator. He has established himself has an outstanding recruiter. His recent recruiting classes have been some of the best classes in the program s history. Recent classes have produced all-conference players and all-academic conference student-athletes. Prior to coming to Presbyterian College he spent three years as an assistant baseball coach at NCAA Division III Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. Throughout his tenure with the Piedmont College Lions, he assisted in recruiting, fundraising, field maintenance, and on-field instruction specializing with the pitching staff. He helped lead the program to a pair of National Christian College World Series Tournament appearances and the 2003 National Christian College South Region Championship. He also served as a resident director at Piedmont College for three years, while serving the Admissions Office as a counselor. During his playing career, Johnson was a four-year letter winner at Methodist University as a pitcher. Johnson was a two-year captain, an all South Region selection, SGA Senior Athlete of the Year. He made three NCAA III South Regional Tournament appearances in 98, 99, 01. As a senior in high school, he helped lead Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville, Va., to the first Virginia AAA State Championship in the school s history. Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Management, with a minor in Business Administration from Methodist College in 2001. He later earned his Masters of Business Administration from Piedmont College in May of 2003. Johnson was recently married on Oct. 6, 2007 to the former Shannon Paitsell of Evans, GA. The couple resides in Greenwood, S.C. Charles Assey, Assistant Coach Former PC baseball player Charles Assey is in his first season as an assistant coach at Presbyterian College. Assey came to PC after a successful stint at St. Edward s University in Austin, Texas where he served as a graduate assistant baseball coach and as the head strength and conditioning coach. Assey graduated from PC in 2004 with a Bachelors of Science in Social Studies with a minor in Secondary Education. He completed his Masters Degree at St. Edward s in May of 2006, graduating with an Arts of Human Services degree with a concentration in Sports Management. During his time at St. Edward s, Assey served as the first base coach and as the assistant recruiting coordinator. He also served as the camp director for former St. Edward s head baseball coach Jeremy Farber s baseball camps. Assey is a veteran in the summer baseball camp circuit as he also been an instructor at summer baseball camps at The Citadel, Clemson, Lander and the University of Texas. During his time with the Blue Hose, Assey, a right-handed pitcher, recorded 30 strikeouts and finished his career with two saves in 48.1 innings on the hill. PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE 18 Inaugural NCAA Division I Season Presbyterian College is located in Clinton, South Carolina, a community of 10,000 nestled in upstate South Carolina. The college s beautiful 240-acre campus and a national reputation for academic excellence attract 1,200 students representing 30 states and eleven foreign countries. PC was born of the dreams of a humble pastor determined to restore a territory plundered by war. In 1864 22-year-old Rev. William Plumer Jacobs arrived in Clinton to serve as pastor of First Presbyterian Church. Eight years later Jacobs and the church founded the Clinton High School Association to provide the young people of Laurens County a place to receive a Christian-based, liberal arts education. In 1880 the Clinton High School Association became first Clinton College, and then in 1890 the Presbyterian College of South Carolina. Coeducational instruction occurred from the start. In keeping with its goal to produce graduates of high moral character, Presbyterian College adopted an honor code, a studentrun system still flourishing today, to govern students academic and social lives. Today s PC curriculum includes international programs, internships, and unique cultural and arts opportunities. In 1943 PC football coach Lonnie McMillan gave the Clemson football stadium its famous nickname, Death Valley. The Scotsman Club, formerly known as the Walter Johnson Club, was created in 1937. Its purpose still today is to provide athletic scholarships for young men and women who excel in both sports venues and classrooms. In the 1960s PC s intercollegiate tennis program was ranked number 2 in the nation. In 2007, after 15 years in NCAA Division II, the college entered its transitional year of membership into NCAA Division I. Today PC fields sixteen competitive teams in men s and women s sports, and Blue Hose athletes routinely earn academic as well as athletic honors. PC is a member of the Big South Conference.
PC FACILITIES The Presbyterian College Athletic Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The 16-sport athletic department s athletic facilities include the 2,500-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Tennis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Soccer Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex, and the PC Softball Complex. Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton 24, distinguished alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long devotee of PC sports. Completed in 1975, the facility serves as both a sports and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000 spectators for men s and women s basketball as well as volleyball. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the facility. Ample classrooms, multi-purpose space, and equipment serve the physical education instruction program. Adjoining Templeton Center on the right is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an 11,500-squarefoot addition containing Ross E. Templeton P.E. Center men s and women s locker rooms and 10 coaches offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake, M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC s Sports Medicine staff who maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center is the 6,000-square-foot facility adjoining to the left of the Templeton Center that was built in 1994. This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, Furman Pinson Court alumni groups, athletic teams, and special events. It also includes a kitchen, restrooms, and a storage area. Templeton Weight Facility Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in October of 2004, replaced the facility s racquetball court that was no longer in service. The 38 x 70 addition provides an additional 2,660 square feet of weightlifting area for the college s 16 varsity athletic teams. The original weight room, located at the east end of the Furman B. Pinson Court, provides 2,400 square feet of workout space that will give the Blue Hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes custom equipment designed and installed by ArrowHawk of Laurens, S.C. Templeton Weight Facility Templeton Tennis Center Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center is home for the nationally ranked Blue Hose men s and women s tennis programs. Templeton Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events, including hosting the SAC Tennis Championships from 2002-04. Templeton Tennis Center Martin Stadium Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in 2000 by the Kenneth Martin Family, of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens 77, of Columbia, S.C. provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home for the Blue Hose men s and women s soccer programs which have received national recognition over the years. PC Softball Complex The PC Softball Complex is located on the 31-acre Young Intramural Park. This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in 1997 when the sport was still at club level. The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the rightfield fence which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005 season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also has three other softball fields which can be used for practice or tournament competition. The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food Lion/ SAC Tournament from 2001-03 and in 2007. Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presbyterian College in 1915 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for 43 years. President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home football game of the 1928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used as the home site by the Blue Hose men and women s lacrosse teams, resulted mainly from a $10,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist, as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, 1908. The Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Bailey Foundation provided for the renovation of the track and stadium in 1986. The facility served as the home field for the Blue Hose football program from its opening prior to the 1928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of 185-109-8, good for a.626 winning percentage. PC Baseball Complex The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The Complex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in the late 1980 s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events at the collegiate and high school level over the years. The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a 10- inning scoreboard located behind the leftfield fence. THE BLUE HOSE PC Softball Complex Bailey Memorial Stadium During the 2002 season, Presbyterian College opened the new 6,500-seat Bailey PC Baseball Complex Memorial Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility features a multi-level press box, a spacious field house, and concession stands for home and visiting fans. Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a 15-foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk, of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus. Scotsman Club members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue Hose football from the loggia level, which has open access to the home stands and a superb view of the playing field. The second story of the press box is the president s level. Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush surroundings of the private president s box. Also located on this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio booths which are located on each end of this level, and the sports information box. The top level of the press box is the film level, which offers coaches boxes and a filming area for both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is the Yonce Field House. The 9,000-square-foot facility houses both home and visiting football teams with locker room facilities. A doctor s office and a sports medicine taping room are also located in the field house. 20 Inaugural NCAA Division I Season
For more than 20 years, the Big South Conference has been a progressive, NCAA Division I athletic Conference reflecting the energy and growth of the Southeastern United States. Founded in 1983, the Big South has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence both on the field of play and in the classroom. Based in Charlotte, N.C., the Big South Conference s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic league is evident by competitive success on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, the enhancement of the quality of the studentathlete experience, and strategic planning that has carried the Big South through the first decade of the 21st Century. Entering its 24th year of existence in 2007-08, the Big Kyle B. Kallander Commissioner South Conference continues to emerge by providing quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The League consists of eight member institutions: Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, High Point University, Liberty University, UNC Asheville, Radford University, Virginia Military Institute and Winthrop University. The Big South reached new heights in 2006-07, as the League experienced monumental milestones in nearly every sport. In football, Coastal Carolina became the first Big South member to receive a berth in the NCAA Division I Championship, being selected as an at-large participant to highlight the Conference s fifth year of sponsoring football. In men s basketball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to be ranked in the national top 25 and first to win a first round NCAA Tournament with its 74-64 win over Notre Dame. In women s basketball, the Big South had two teams participate in the postseason for the first time in League history. In men s golf, Coastal Carolina became the first Big South squad to advance to the final round of the NCAA Championship and finished fifth the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In softball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to reach the Championship game of an NCAA Regional. In baseball, Coastal Carolina was ranked as high as No. 10 in the national polls, received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Regional and became the first Big South member to host an NCAA Regional. In volleyball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to win a game in the NCAA Tournament. The Big South also had its first-ever women s cross country All-American in 2006-07, as well as its first women s golf All-American in 10 years. Additionally, Radford tennis player Martin Sayer was selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship for the second-straight year, Liberty s Josh McDougal received All-America honors in the three running sports (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track) for the second consecutive season, and Coastal Carolina golfer Dustin Johnson was at one time the No. 1-ranked college golfer en route to earning first-team All-America honors for the second year in-a-row. The Conference again went 2-1 in the ESPN BracketBusters men s basketball event, had more than 30 All-Americans, and had softball and men s soccer televised for the first time in League history. The Conference s on-field accomplishments were duplicated in the classroom. A total of 36 Big South student-athletes were named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), NINE of which earned Academic All-America accolades. In football, Coastal Carolina s Anthony Franklin received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and eight Big South member sports teams were honored by the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry initially began recruiting members into the Big South. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. The League s seven charter members were Armstrong State, Augusta, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Radford and Winthrop. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner. Under Sasser s leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. Sasser was so integral to the growth and foundation of the League that in 2000, the Commissioner s Cup -- the annual award given to the institution with the most successful athletic year -- was renamed the George F. Sasser Cup. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 11 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. He developed the Big South Marketing Group, which has resulted in increased revenues and exposure for the Conference and its members. He also brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history and created the Big South Television Network in 2001 as a television syndicate for the League. Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to all sports. Kallander has also successfully integrated the Conference s profile with the member institutions general student body, notably through the development of the Big South Academic Consortium, which sponsors the annual Academic College Bowl among League members and the Big South Undergraduate Research Symposium. In 2005-06, the Big South began its Sportsmanship Awards program and Graduate Fellowships program, honoring one graduating male and female student-athlete attending graduate school the following fall. In the Fall of 2002, the Big South welcomed the addition of football as a Conference sport, bringing the number of Division I championship programs the Big South sponsors to 18, joining men s and women s cross country, men s and women s soccer, volleyball, men s and women s basketball, men s and women s indoor/outdoor track, men s and women s tennis, men s and women s golf, softball and baseball. The Big South receive automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men s and women s basketball, men s and women s soccer, volleyball, men s and women s golf, baseball, softball, and men s and women s tennis. In celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2003-04, the Big South inducted its inaugural Hall of Fame class, which included 11 former student-athletes and administrators who were an integral part in the Big South s early development and vitality. The Hall of Fame now stands at 30 members. The League also recognizes and honors academic excellence with the Presidential Honor Roll and the George A. Christenberry Award, which recognizes student-athletes graduating with a 4.0 grade point average. Additionally, the Conference s Sports Information Directors annually select a Scholar-Athlete in each Conference sport, plus a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year The Big South continues to secure aggressive and unique television packages, making the Conference one of the leaders among all Division I Leagues in television exposure for its studentathletes. Entering the 2006-07 season, the Conference will have an expanded lineup on regional network SportSouth, in addition to a partnership with the fledgling national network, The America Channel, allowing the Big South to televise its largest array of events and sports in its history. The Conference also boasts relationships with FSN South, Comcast SportsNet (CSN), Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS), College Sports Television (CSTV), Fox College Sports (FCS) and the ESPN family of networks, which will televise the 2008 Advance Auto Parts Men s Basketball Championship game live on ESPN. 22 Inaugural NCAA Division I Season

WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE? THE BLUE HOSE A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... [quoting from Walter Johnson s letter] It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirit of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history.
