BE SAFE BE RESPECTFUL BE RESPONSIBLE TO BE A LEARNER Chappy Week From the Principal The Paper Plane challenge last Friday as part of Chappy week was a great success with lots of our students competing for the title of best paper plane builder in their year level. Due to the windy conditions we had to take over the Prep-1 classroom during second break. There were some fantastic design and throws with one student s plane flying from one end of the room to the other. Well done to all our students who took part. Friday 1 st June 2018 Upcoming Events Monday 4 th June P&C Meeting Library 6:20pm Sporting School Grant for Term 2 A big thank you to Tom from the Mackay Cutters who over the last three weeks has been working with all our Merinda students developing their Rugby League skills through the NRL Backyard League program. From the P&C Hello everyone What a busy time it is! The 120 th Anniversary celebration preparation is in full swing with the P&C and the school working hard to get everything ready. This will be a great opportunity to showcase our fabulous school to the community. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! MERINDA FAMILIES WE NEED YOU We would love your help for the 120 year celebrations. Your help is needed assisting in the kitchen, stall sales, displays and ticket sales. Please contact myself on 0420 654 994 or Sarah in the office to volunteer. Money from this day will be going back into the school for purchasing much needed resources for your children. This Sunday we are having a sausage sizzle at the Hansen Park Markets from 8am-12pm. We will also be selling raffle tickets for our Monster Raffle that will be drawn at the 120 year Celebration. Come on down to say hello and buy a sausage and tickets. The next meeting is on Monday 4 th June in the library, there will be a Special Meeting at 6:20pm to change the quorum numbers with the general meeting starting after at 6:30pm. We would love to see some new faces to help contribute to the school s future. Next Meeting Monday 4 th June 6.30pm in the library Upcoming Fundraisers Sunday 3 rd June Sausage sizzle at Hansen Park Markets and raffle ticket selling. 23 rd June Merinda State School 120 th Anniversary Celebration Jo Griffiths P&C President Change to letters sent home To save paper wastage we will now only be sending home letters with the youngest sibling. This is for general letters, all permission notes will still need to go home with each student. If you would prefer a child other than your youngest receives your letters from the school please contact Sarah in the front office on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday on 4785 2193. Thank you.

What's happening in Prep/One Busy Bees Last Friday Prep/One had an absolute blast at the Under 8 s Day held at Queens Beach. They were so well behaved and represented Merinda beautifully. They had so much fun playing with friends. I would like to thank all the wonderful parents who helped on the day, it wouldn t be possible without you! I would also like to give a shout out to Mrs Lynch and Miss Joseph for their epic face painting and the amazing 5/6 leaders for helping with the epic hair spray! I just wanted to shout out to all the amazing Merinda parents, we appreciate you so much! I want to remind you that you are always welcome and invited in the prep/one classroom, don t be shy! The door opens from 8:30am unless I am in a meeting or otherwise and school doesn t formally start until 9am. The morning is busy and I understand I m not always available as I am getting ready for the day but it is such a lovely time before school where I try to set up fun activities for the students to ease into the day. Please feel to join in on the fun, play a game with a group of kids, read with them or check out your child s awesome work. It s a great help seeing you interact with the students an encouraging them all to unpack and get ready for the day, I appreciate it. Jessie Pawson

Photos from Year 2/3 Anne Joseph What s happening in 3/4 #hashtag #hardworkers#gettingexcited#welovelearning, we are still working hard moving toward our assessments. Our classroom is getting closer and closer to our moving in. Can I please remind you that we need your old toothpaste tubes and boxes, toothbrushes and boxes, floss boxes and please remember to vote for our garden competition. Also congratulations to Mrs Brazel on gaining us $1000 to purchase worm farms for each of our classes. These will be a great addition to our sensory garden and a wonderful way for us to reduce our waste footprint. Cheers, Mrs S What s happening in 5/6 This week in 5\6 we went down to P\1 and did some literacy activities with them like match the first sound with the rest of the word. For example if you had spider you had ider and you had to find the sp sound. We also started watching the Lorax and practising for our assessment for English, where we will be writing an analysis between film and novel on a text of similar topics. Everyone was very excited for crazy hair and sock day on the same day! Were also exited to know that all the money we raise is going to the Ronald McDonald house. The Ronald McDonald house helps people who are sick and can t afford a reservation at a hotel or caravan/tent park. Something that is happening is the 3/4 s and 2/3 s buildings are nearly finished so all of us don t have to do laps around the school anymore which is exciting. We have also finished up with the NRL and footy. It was so fun having them here to work with us. We also had a visit from Bulk Ports where we received a $1000 grant to go toward a sustainable future. This is super exciting. Savannah

Please bring in any oral care products you have such as, empty toothpaste tubes, floss containers, old tooth brushes etc, and ask as many people you know too! We can make this possible if everyone gets on board. Did you know that a tooth brush should be changed every couple of months? 5 days left to order Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, don t miss out!!! All prizes have been donated from local businesses and families and all the money raised from the raffle will go towards resources for our students. The P&C will be holding a Sausage Sizzle this Sunday 3 rd June at the Bowen Markets to sell raffle tickets if you are around come down and say hi! Chappy Channel I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who assisted in some way with Chappy Week events last week, and also to the school staff for allowing me to visit the other schools to support the other chaplains in Bowen for their Chappy Week activities. Around the state more than six hundred other chaplains were also running extra activities in nearly nine hundred schools; it is a privilege to be able to work in the schools with young people, and one that I do not take for granted. The Chappy Churros evening was a great success; my thanks again to Le Sorelle for their support of this event. Thanks also to the staff who came along to the night; your support was greatly appreciated. Chappy Adam from Bowen State SchooI and I joined Chappy Dylan to take on all comers for three on three basketball on Monday at the high school, on Wednesday Chappy Dylan and Chappy Adam came to Queens Beach State School for a paper plane competition during first lunch, and then on Friday Chappy Dylan and I joined a Bowen State School Staff team to play the students in a high stakes game of touch football. Then of course on Friday at second we had the epic Merinda State School paper plane competition. We ended up having to hold it in the Prep/1 classroom due to the windy weather, so thanks to Miss Pawson for allowing us to destroy her classroom for this event. A special mention needs to go to one young student who showed us that the room wasn t long enough by hitting the back wall with his plane. Also happening on Friday last week was the Under 8 s Big Day Out. This has nothing to do with Chappy Week, but happened to fall in the same week this year. Thanks to Mr Wells for allowing me to hang out over there for the morning to assist Queens Beach with this. I saw most of our young students during the morning and the day appeared to be a huge success. Just a quick reminder about the Queensland Father of the Year competition; if anyone knows a super dad they would like to nominate, you can nominate them online at www.qldfatheroftheyear.org.au or by downloading the nomination form and posting it in to the SU Qld Brisbane office. Nominations close on Sunday July 15 th. Also, there is colouring in competition open to any primary school aged children. Two age brackets are running; ages 4 to 8, and ages 9 to 12. The state winner for each age group will win a giant super teddy bear similar to the one you saw me with at parade last week but much bigger, and there will be one district winner who will win the small bear you saw. Entries close June 22 nd. Come and see me if you would like to be involved. Until next time, Chappy Glen
