Handouts and project show Welcoming New 4-H Members As new members come to your club, take time to say hi and make them feel welcome in your group. Here are some things your club might consider doing to help welcome new families to Phillips or Rooks County 4-H. Appoint a New Family Coordinator to introduce visitors at the monthly meeting, orient families to 4- H, and be available for questions throughout the year. Buddy System - Consider pairing new members or families with current members or families. It s a great way for everyone to get better acquainted and to help new families feel comfortable in the club. Let s do everything we can to make Phillips and Rooks County 4-H a welcoming and great learning place for all families! 4-H Age Youth must be 7 years old before January 1, 2017 to join 4-H. Those turning 7 on or after January 1 will join 4-H the following year. 4-H Online Enrollment The 2016-17 4-H online enrollments will open October 1, 2016. ALL new and returning 4-H members must complete the enrollment and health form on-line at https://ks.4honline.com. Make sure all contact information is accurate. The information entered during this enrollment process will be the information used to get important 4-H information to all members including monthly 4-H newsletters. Please have the online re-enrollment process complete by November 1, 2016. Contact your Extension office with any questions. Shutterbugs in Hays The 4-H Photo Action Team is planning a new Shutterbug event to be held in Hays on October 15, 2016. Shutterbug events provide opportunities for 4-H youth to participate in hands-on photography activities. The Hays event will include workshops on a variety of topics, such as lighting, composition, portraits and macrophotography. The event will be held the morning of Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the K-State Ag Research Center Auditorium, 1232 240th Avenue, Hays, KS. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. (no pre-registration necessary). The opening session will start at 9:15 a.m. with workshops continuing throughout the morning. Kansas 4-H Leadership Weekend (KYLF & KVF) The Kansas Youth Leadership Forum (KYLF) and the Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum (KVF) information is on the 4-H Online CVent Registration System and the 4-H Website. The Forums will be held November 18-20, 2016 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. KYLF is for youth ages 14-18
before January 1, 2017 and KVF is for all Kansas 4- H Volunteers. KYLF will feature leadership workshops, Youth Council Elections, and opportunities to learn and have fun. The Kansas 4-H Volunteer Forum will feature training from the Kansas Leadership Center. in the last few years; make sure that you do not delay in signing up to attend! The dates for CWF are June 15-26, 2017. Delegates must be responsible and mature young people, 15-18 years of age by January 1, 2017. Online Registration is available now. This year participants in both forums will register through the same system. Registration deadline is October 15, 2016 for both events. National 4-H Week National 4-H Week is October 3 9, 2016. Please make plans to promote the 4-H program and recruit new members. Check out the Join 4-H website at www.joinkansas4-h.org and encourage others to check it out too! 48 Hours of 4-H October 8-9, 2016 Join us this fall in seeing just how much we can give back to our communities! The weekend after National 4-H Week, is the perfect opportunity to set up a service project. Invite your friends, clubs, adult volunteers and 4-H Alums too! Find all the information at Kansas 4-h.org and start planning your projects. Citizenship Washington Focus Road trip across the USA stopping to see Philadelphia, Gettysburg, the Liberty Bell and more! Meet, learn, share and tour with youth from other states and respected resource people. Walk among places that have made history and places that are making news today. Visit Capitol Hill, government departments, historic sites, and memorials. Get a close-up view of the political process through visits to Capitol Hill. Meet with the Kansas Congressional and Senate delegations to discuss legislative issues. Participate in workshops and assembly groups to learn life skills and discuss possible solutions to domestic and international problems. Interact with 4-H members from other states, learning and sharing about 4-H and other interests and issues. Phillips County Treasurer s & Leaders We are making changes to the yearly audit process of the club and county projects treasurer s books. Date for the audit process is October 17, 2016 at 6:00pm prior to Officer Training. For this year s auditing process each club & county projects treasurer along with one leader need to attend. The treasurers and leaders will do the audit of another clubs treasurers books. All treasurers books must be turned in at this time. A letter will be mailed to each of you with information that must be complete before the audit. Officers Training Officers Training will be held on October 17, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fair Building. If you are a club officer please plan on attending. We will cover the duties and responsibilities of each office at this training. Club/County Project Inventory Just as a reminder the Club and/or County Project Inventory sheets are due to the Extension Office by January 1, 2017. 4-H Sunday Phillips County 4-H Sunday will be held at the First Christian Church, Logan, Kansas on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. The 4-H Council is looking for volunteers to help with 4-H Sunday. If you are interested in helping with 4-H Sunday please contact the Phillips County Extension Office. National 4-H Week National 4-H week is October 3-9, 2016. In addition to 4-H Sunday and Radio Spots the Phillips County Enrollment and Membership committee is asking all 4-H ers to wear your 4-H club shirt to school on Monday, October 3, 2016 and wear any other 4-H shirt you may have during the rest of the week. Phillips County Achievement Banquet The Phillips County Achievement Banquet is scheduled for Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. at the Phillips County 4-H Building. Remember to sign up for shooting sports BB gun when you enroll on 4Honline. There is a $15 fee to help cover costs of supplies. Classes will be held in the basement of the Fischer Building in Phillipsburg from 3:00-5:00 p.m. This will be the first class in the 8 week fundamental/safety course. All beginners are required to pass the 8 week fundaments/safety course before continuing on to competition matches. Previous shooters are welcome to attend this course for a refresher. At least one parent or guardian is required to attend the course. We will be offering BB gun, Air Rifle, and Air Pistol competition after successful completion of the fundamental/safety course. Phillips County Shooting Sports Archery 4-H Archery will begin on Monday, October, 10, 2016. Remember to sign up for Archery during 4-H Enrollment. Classes will be held at the Phillips County Fair Building beginning at 7:00 p.m. This will be a 7 week course from October 10-November 21, 2016 on shooting a recurve bow. This program is offered to all 4-H youth ages 9-18. Each youth must have a parent present at all times while the youth are shooting. All equipment will be provided. In order to complete the certification, you must attend 5 classes. We must have at least six youth participate to offer this course. If you are interested in participating and are unable to attend the first night, please call the Phillipsburg Extension Office at 785-543-6845.

Rooks County 4-H Council The next Rooks County 4-H Council meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 14, 2016 at Harding Hall 4-H Building. Rooks County 4-H Council Happenings The Rooks County 4-H Council met on September 12, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Achievement Celebration will be held November 6, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Stockton. Ice cream will be served for refreshment and dodgeball will be played. A club mentioned that there was a family that didn t work in the food stand and has benefited financially from the 4-H Council by paying registration fees to events. Discussion was that this information should be taken back to the clubs for further discussion. Marty Dinkel thanked the 4-H Council for allowing her to manage the Food Stand this year at the Fair. The 4-H Club Financial Review will be held October 10, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. One adult and treasurer from each club should participate and bring the clubs treasurer book and financial statements. Livestock Committee reported on the September 12, 2016 meeting. There will be a Hannah Thomas 4-H Spirit Award. This award will be based on a 4-H ers involvement throughout the 4-H year. Nominations will be made by Rooks County K-State Research and Extension Agents, club leaders, and peers during the week of the Rooks County Free Fair. The award will be given out to one 4-Her at the Rooks County Free Fair 4- H/FFA Livestock Premium Sale. More information will be coming. A sign will be made dedicating the beef barn as the Hannah Thomas Beef Barn with a proposal to have Rooks County 4-H Council pay for the sign. The clubs should discuss what type of sign to have made. The Rooks County 4-H Food Stand was discussed with comments made that the 4-H Council should put together a proposed renovation plan and fundraiser/financial plan and take it to Rooks County Fair Board for discussion. It was decided to have a Food Stand Renovation Committee. Those wanting to serve on the committee should call the Extension Office by October 14, 2016. The horse show rule that exhibitors who show in Horsemanship or Showmanship classes must first show in a Halter class will be removed from the 4-H Fairbook. Hannah Thomas was nominated as the Friend of 4- H Award to be acknowledged at the Achievement Celebration. 48 Hours of 4-H was discussed and the clubs are asked to report activities so work accomplished gets recognized. It was decided to change the 4-H Council meeting locations to include Plainville, Palco and Stockton. Anna Muir and Rachael Boyle will work on location and dates for the meeting rotation. The next meeting was scheduled for November 14, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. It will be election of officers. 4-H Club and County Projects Financial Review

Please bring the 4-H club s treasurer book and financial statements. The club s treasurer as well as an adult representative needs to be present and will assist in looking at other club and county projects financial records. Rooks County Free Fair: 4-H Spirit Award The Rooks County Free Fair 4-H Spirit Award is sponsored by the HT Livestock Memorial Foundation. Each club is asked to pick one member (does not have to be within own club) that have shown the most 4-H Spirit this year. Nominations are due on August 1, 2017 to the Phillips-Rooks Extension District, Stockton Office. Nominations will be posted at the Rooks County 4-H Fair Office on Monday during Fair Week. Each 4-H member, one club leader, and extension agents are asked to cast one ballot for the member that exemplifies the 4-H Spirit throughout the year and during the Rooks County Free Fair. Ballots must be turned in by 5:00 p.m. Thursday during the Rooks County Free Fair. A committee team from HT Livestock Memorial Foundation will review the nominations and make a final determination of award. Award winner will receive a name plaque at Harding Hall 4-H Building, jacket, and monetary award. The award will be given out at the end of the Rooks County Free Fair 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale on Saturday morning.
