Meade County 4-H Connections June 2018 Dear 4-H Families: What s Inside? QUALITY COUNTS PROJECT MEETINGS DAY CAMP/CAMPS BLOCK FOODS DAY AG CHALLENGE Summer is here! Isn t that exciting???! I LOVE SUMMER TIME!! County Fairs are upon us as are camps, family vacations, extra fun activities, and relaxation! Ahhhh toes in the water and book in hand YES! I ve attached the Auction Eligibility Rules and forms in this newsletter. It is the 4-H member s responsibility to make sure they are in compliance with the policies. Please remember deadlines are deadlines and rules are rules. Let us be found setting a great example for our youth by honoring those to the best of our ability. That fulfills a two-fold purpose; One, the members learn by our example and take those lessons through life which is a great building block to use in life s foundation of great practices and the other, our members don t miss out on any of the opportunities! Newsletters are predominately our way of communicating important information, so please take the time to read it and use whatever applies to your life, your 4-H member s life, your community, and your world! Crochet Meetings Jeanne Clawson will have Crochet meetings on June 5th June 13 th June 21st June 25th July 3 rd July 11 th Each meeting is from 5:30 to 7:00 PM @ Extension Office. If you have any questions reach out to Jeanne @ groveranch20@gmail.com Shooting Sports Please see the large red box under Trainings and Camps with the practices and fair competition times Horse Project Meetings June 18 June 25 July 2 July 9 All meetings will be at 7 p.m @ Meade Fairgrounds. The Practice Show will be July 15th at 7 pm. We will practice all classes for the show, in show order! Essential Oils-How Can they benefit you? Jacque Tacha will be holding a county wide Essential Oils Class on Monday, June 18th, 2018. Jacque is a Meade resident whom works in Radiology. She has also discovered the benefits of Essential Oils and she will be hosting a class helping us learn too! Call the office to be put on the sign up sheet. The cost of this Make and Take class is $7.50. Call Carrie at 620-873-8790 to register for this fun class! RSVP by June 6 th! Quality Counts Required for Livestock Members! Youth enrolled in Beef, Sheep, Swine, and Goats are required to attend Quality Counts to be eligible for the fair. New for 2018 Youth who cannot attend either training will need to take the Youth Quality Care Assurance Training online for $15. Please contact Elly for more details on how to take the online class. Youth must have completed the YQCA training by July 1 st. June 22 10 am June 26th 3 pm

Other Opportunities 2018 Kansas 4-H Wheat Expo What: Kansas is famous for its golden wheat fields all across Kansas. Families have been participating with the Kansas 4-H State Wheat Expo for 60+ years. Join us at the Community Center in South Hutchinson on August 2nd for an exciting educational wheat fun day dealing in all things wheat. The wheat expo is open to all 4-H members, family members, 4-H leaders and Extension staff. Full information and details are now available. The $6 registration fee will be collected at the door in South Hutchinson on August 2nd When: August 2, 2018 Where: Community Center, 101 W. Avenue C, South Hutchinson, KS 67505 Who: Any interested youth and adults Registration Deadline: 7-22-18 Native Quilting Traditions Starting July 18, 2018 and last until September 30, 2018 4-H ers have the opportunity to view 29 quilts from all over the country, including examples by Cherokee, Navajo, Ojibway, Sioux, and Native Hawaiian quilters. Other components of the exhibit include hands on activities, a story station, video presentations, and other stations that enhance culture, craft, and tradition. Stauth Memorial Museum in Montezuma, KS. Please call in advance to schedule your groups of 5 or more! 620-846-2527. If there is enough interest, Christine could transport on a date everyone can go! 4-H BLOCK FOODS DAY HEADS UP FOR UPCOMING EVENTS The annual 4-H BLOCK FOODS DAY is Friday, June 22nd. The activities will be held at Stevens County Fair Grounds in Hugoton, Kansas. We will begin at 9:00 a.m. and go until 1:30 p.m. The cost is $15.00 and will include lunch. Kids of all ages will learn how to make bread from the King Arthur kits as well as some quick breads such as biscuits and muffins. We will learn a variety of bread shaping techniques! Registration deadline for this fun day will be June 8th! If you have any questions, please contact Carrie or Christine at the office 620-873-8790. Southwest Kansas District 4-H Horse Show Thursday June 28, 2018 beginning at 9 a.m. in Dodge City @ Western Expos Center. If interested we have the Entry forms that must be completed by June 15th at the office. We also have T-shirt order forms for this show! KSF/KJLS Nomination Deadline June 15th All small animal state livestock nominations (non-market beef) are due June 15th. This is a postmark deadline, but families are encouraged to submit their nominations early to avoid missing the deadline! Market and commercial female livestock projects that will be shown at the Kansas State Fair or Kansas Junior Livestock Show must be nominated in order to enter and exhibit in the state shows this fall. This includes commercial heifers, market swine, commercial gilts, market lambs, commercial ewes, and ALL meat goats.

Trainings & Camps Wild Horse Camp June 4-6 - Camper Departure and Arrival Youth attending WildHorse 4-H Camp need to be prepared to leave AT 9 AM Monday Morning from the Extension Office on June 4 th. Tawney Stapelton and Lisa Koons are helping us drive members to camp. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, LADIES!!! Counselors will have other arrangements to get to camp. Campers and Counselors will arrive back to the Extension Office on Wednesday, June 6 th around 4 pm. Parents please be advised of these times. WATCH YOUR MAIL BOX FOR CAMP INFO LETTERS! Heart of Kansas Camp June 9-12 - Camper Departure and Arrival Youth attending Heart of Kansas at Rock Springs will leave at 9 AM on June 9th and will arrive back home around 4:30 PM on Tuesday, June 12th. At this time, we can transport all kids to camp. WATCH MAIL FOR INFORMATION! FOWLER Library Summer Nutrition Program June 20 The FOWLER Library is having a Summer Nutrition Program June 20 TH. Counselors are needed. Please contact Christine if you are interested in becoming a counselor-(older 4-H members can be Counselors too) Day Camp (MEADE CITY PARK) This year Day Camp will be held June 21st from 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. at Meade City Park. This camp is for youth ages 5-11. Currently we are looking for older 4-H members to be counselors for day camp. We currently don t require a minimum age for counselors at Day Camp, however older youth will be given first preference. Please contact Christine if you would like to be a counselor. Cost is $15.00. 2018 Meade County and 4-H Fair Premium Auction Eligibility Requirements Name: Club: Item Selling: Beef Sheep Goat Swine Food To be eligible to sell an item, livestock or foods, at the Meade County Fair Premium Auction, members must complete a minimum of three (3) items listed below in addition to attending at least five (5) club meetings from August-July. This will not prevent the participant from entering items in the fair. It is the member s responsibility to complete the items and clearly mark them with an X and date of event on this form and have the 4-H club secretary and leader verify the meeting dates attended by July 15 the year of the upcoming fair. Please return this form complete with dates and signatures at the same time fair entries are due for upcoming fair.
